The prevention of stroke by statins: A meta-analysis
Conclusions: Our findings indicated that the statins were associated with the patients with stroke in recurrence rate, but there was no significant correlation with the mortality and morbidity of patients with stroke.

Aerobic exercises and cognitive function in post-stroke patients: A systematic review with meta-analysis
Conclusion: Aerobic exercise has a good impact on enhancing the cognitive dysfunction of patients after stroke, which stroke patients were found to benefit the most from moderate-intensity exercise. However, our studies did not found that aerobic exercise had an active result on cognitive flexibility, working memory, selective attention and contention resolution.

Trajectories of arm recovery early after stroke: an exploratory study using latent class growth analysis
CONCLUSIONS: We found unique patterns of arm recovery with distinct characteristics for each cluster. Better understanding of patterns of arm recovery can guide future models and intervention development.KEY MESSAGESArm recovery early after stroke follows four distinct trajectories that relate to time post stroke, initial stroke severity and baseline level of motor arm function.Identification of recovery patterns gives insight into the uniqueness of individual's recovery. This study offers a novel approach on which to build and develop future models of arm recovery.PMID:36594373 | DOI:10.1080/07853890.2022.2159062

Impact of gender-age interaction on the outcome of ischemic stroke in an Italian cohort of patients treated according to a standardized clinical pathway.
CONCLUSIONS: Our study confirms the excess risk of disability after stroke in women, although it is mostly explained by the occurrence of the most severe clinical syndromes. As for mortality, female gender seems to play a protective role, at least in the short-term and in younger patients. PMID: 23998857 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Enteral tube feeding of patients with acute stroke: When does the risk of diarrhoea increase?
ConclusionsThe length of time on ETF is associated with diarrhoea development in patients with acute stroke, demonstrating a temporal cut‐off point. Seven days or longer on ETF is related to the occurrence of diarrhoea, whereas less than 7 days on ETF does not show this effect.

Hemispheric Activation during Planning and Execution Phases in Reaching post Stroke: A consort study
This study was to characterize the activation in the non-lesion hemisphere during movement planning and execution by localizing sources of high-density electroencephalography (EEG) signal and estimating the source strength (current density [A/m2]). Ten individuals with chronic stroke and shoulder/elbow coordination deficits and 5 healthy controls participated in the study. EEG (64 channels) was recorded from scalp electrodes while the subjects performed a reach task involving shoulder flexion and elbow extension of the affected (patients) or dominant (controls) upper extremity. Sources of the EEG were obtained and analyzed...

Incidence and predictors of new‐onset constipation during acute hospitalisation after stroke
ConclusionsNew‐onset constipation is common among patients admitted for stroke and orthopaedic conditions during acute hospitalisation. The early occurrence, on day 2 of admission, calls for prompt preventive intervention for constipation.

Safety of intravenous thrombolysis for acute ischaemic stroke including concomitant neoplastic disease sufferers – experience from Poland
ConclusionIntravenous thrombolysis performed in Caucasian stroke patients with past or current neoplastic diseases, but not in the course of chemo‐ and radiotherapy, can be a safe and effective method of treatment. In making decision on the thrombolytic treatment, the risk of bleeding complications and the life expectancy should be assessed.

Left Ventricular Relative Wall Thickness Versus Left Ventricular Mass Index in Non-Cardioembolic Stroke Patients
Abstract: In non-cardioembolic stroke patients, the cardiac manifestations of high blood pressure are of particular interest. Emerging data suggest that echocardiographically determined left ventricular hypertrophy is independently associated with risk of ischemic stroke. The primary objective of this study was to evaluate the frequency of different patterns of left ventricular (LV) remodeling and hypertrophy in a group of consecutive patients admitted with non-cardioembolic stroke or transient ischemic attack (TIA). In particular, we were interested in how often the relative wall thickness (RWT) was abnormal in patients w...

Blood Pressure Reduction in the Acute Phase of an Ischemic Stroke Does Not Improve Short- or Long-Term Dependency or Mortality: A Meta-Analysis of Current Literature
Abstract: The purpose of this study was to perform a meta-analysis of current literature to determine whether lowering blood pressure (BP) during the acute phase of an ischemic stroke improves short- and long-term outcomes. PubMed, Cochrane, and Embase were searched until September 5, 2014 using combinations of the search terms: blood pressure reduction, reduced blood pressure, lowering blood pressure, ischemic stroke, acute stroke, and intra-cerebral hemorrhage. Inclusion criteria were randomized controlled trial and patients with acute stroke (ischemic or hemorrhagic) treated with an antihypertensive agent or placebo. Ou...

Risk of Ischemic Stroke in Patients With Gastric Cancer: A Nationwide Population-Based Cohort Study
The objectives of this study are to examine the relationship between gastric cancer and ischemic stroke, and to determine predictive risk factors. A nationwide population-based cohort study was conducted using data from the Taiwan National Health Insurance database. A total of 45,060 gastric cancer patients and non-cancer counterparts without antecedent stroke were recruited. Hazard ratios (HRs) and the cumulative incidence of ischemic stroke were calculated, and risk factors for ischemic stroke were assessed. Gastric cancer patients were associated with higher risk of ischemic stroke (HR 1.11, 95% confidence interval [CI]...

Middle Cerebral Artery Calcification: Association With Ischemic Stroke
This study retrospectively included 354 subjects with ischemic stroke in the MCA territory and 1518 control subjects who underwent computed tomography (CT) of the brain. We recorded major known risk factors for ischemic stroke, including age, gender, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, smoking, hyperlipidemia, and obesity, along with the MCA calcium burden, measured with the Agatston calcium scoring method. Univariate and modified logistic regression analyses were performed to examine the association between the MCA calcification and ischemic stroke. The univariate analyses showed significant associations of ischemic stroke w...
