Patent Foramen Ovale and Ischemic Stroke in Patients With Pulmonary Embolism: A Prospective Cohort Study.
Conclusion: Frequency of recent ischemic stroke in patients with symptomatic PE was higher in patients with PFO than in those without PFO. This finding supports the hypothesis that paradoxical embolism is an important mechanism of ischemic stroke in patients with PFO. Primary Funding Source: French Ministry of Health. The population attributable risk and clustering of stroke risk factors in different economical regions of China
The greatest regional variation in stroke prevalence exists in China. However, whether there are differences in population attributable risk (PAR) and clustering of stroke risk factors among regions resulting in stroke geographic variation is unclear. We conducted face-to-face surveys of residents of 14 provinces from September 2016 to May 2017 who participated in the Chinese Stroke Screening and Prevention Project. We compared the specific PAR values of eight risk factors and the different cluster rates and patterns in China. A total of 84,751partipants were included. Eight factors accounted for 70% to 80% of the PAR of...

The effectiveness of home-based therapy on functional outcome, self-efficacy and anxiety among discharged stroke survivors
This study will provide the information on the effectiveness of HBT in comparison to UP among stroke population who are discharged from rehabilitation. Findings from the study will enable rehabilitation professionals to design effective discharge care plan for stroke survivors in combating functional decline when no longer receiving hospital-based therapy. Trial registration: Australian New Zealand Clinical Trials Registry, ACTRN12619001182189 (last updated 22/11/2019).

Deceleration capacity for rapid risk stratification in patients suffering from acute ischemic stroke: A prospective exploratory pilot study
Deceleration capacitiy for rapid risk stratification in stroke patients Cerebral ischemia is a major cause of neurologic deficit and patients suffering from ischemic stroke bear a relevant risk of mortality. Identifying stroke patients at high mortality risk is of crucial clinical relevance. Deceleration capacity of heart rate (DC) as a parameter of cardiac autonomic function is an excellent predictor of mortality in myocardial infarction and heart failure patients. The aim of our study was to evaluate whether DC provides prognostic information regarding mortality risk in patients with acute ischemic stroke. From ...

Does a combination treatment of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation and occupational therapy improve upper limb muscle paralysis equally in patients with chronic stroke caused by cerebral hemorrhage and infarction?: A retrospective cohort study
This study aimed to determine this difference in improvement of upper extremity paralysis using 2-week in-hospital NovEl intervention Using Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation combined with Occupational therapy (NEURO). We scrutinized the medical records of all patients with poststroke (ICH or CI) upper extremity muscle paralysis using Fugl-Meyer assessments (FMAs) who had been admitted to 6 hospitals between March 2010 and December 2018 for rehabilitation treatment. This was a multiinstitutional, open-label, retrospective cohort study without control patients. We evaluated the effects of NEURO on patients with...

Use of central venous catheter and increased risk of ischemic stroke
This study is on fresh ground on the issue of CVC and stroke complications and has the potential to serve as a guide and stimulus for future research. We propose two fundamental strategies to reduce ri sks of stroke associated to CVC that should be evaluated: (i) the implementation of local prevention bundles and (ii) the use of ultrasound scanning for catheter surveillance.5 Based on the authors ’ observations, we further propose that can we create sub-groups of patients, i.e. who were required CVC placement having risk factors to develop stroke vs. patients not having risk factors to develop stroke. This can help us to...

Effectiveness of autogenic relaxation training in addition to usual physiotherapy on emotional state and functional independence of stroke survivors
Discussion: The expected main study outcome is an enhanced evidence-based physiotherapy program that may be used by physiotherapists in the rehabilitation of stroke patients with emotional disturbances. Trial registration: Australian New Zealand Clinical Trials Registry, ACTRN12619001664134 (last updated on 28/11/2019).

An association between electronic nicotine delivery systems use and a history of stroke using the 2016 behavioral risk factor surveillance system
This study aims to assess, using a survey representative of the USA general population, if an association exists between a history of ENDS use and a history of stroke. This cross-sectional study was a secondary data analysis using the 2016 behavioral risk factor surveillance system survey. The main exposure variable of the study was a self-reported history of ENDS use. The main outcome was a self-reported history of stroke. Covariates included sex, race, traditional cigarette use, smokeless tobacco use, chronic kidney disease, diabetes, myocardial infarction, and coronary artery disease. Unadjusted and adjusted logistic...

Exploring community-dwelling stroke survivors’ experiences of receiving a nurse-led theory-based stroke self-management programme: A qualitative study
This study concurred that the SSMP enhanced stroke survivors’ self-efficacy in self-management. Rearrangement of the programme format and enhancements in accessibility could be further examined to enable more effective stroke self-management.

Post Stroke Hyperglycemia as a marker of Stroke Severity and Prognosis: A cohort study
ConclusionFrom our study we can conclude that diabetes mellitus as a risk factor in cases of stroke leads to increase complications and worsens the outcome in cases of stroke whether hemorrhagic or ischemic.RecommendationsFrom our study we recommended strict control of diabetes mellitus when present in cases of stroke to avoid bad outcome and to prevent complications in these cases.

Utility of ultrasound as a promising diagnostic tool for stroke-related sarcopenia: A retrospective pilot study
This study aimed to examine the correlation between ultrasonographic quadriceps muscle thickness (QMT) and dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) derived appendicular lean mass (ALM) in patients with acute hemiplegic stroke. Twenty five participants were included (13 men and 12 women) in this study, who were diagnosed with stroke within 1 month. For both paretic and non-paretic legs, QMT was measured by an ultrasound and ALM was obtained by performing DXA scan. We analyzed the difference and the correlation between ultrasonographic QMT and DXA-derived lean body mass of both paretic and non-paretic legs. Stroke patients wer...
