Impact of gallstone disease on the risk of stroke and coronary artery disease: evidence from prospective observational studies and genetic analyses
Despite epidemiological evidence associating gallstone disease (GSD) with cardiovascular disease (CVD), a dilemma remains on the role of cholecystectomy in modifying the risk of CVD. We aimed to characterize t...

Comparative Safety Analysis of Oral Antipsychotics for In-Hospital Adverse Clinical Events in Older Adults After Major Surgery : A Nationwide Cohort Study
CONCLUSION: These results suggest that atypical antipsychotics and haloperidol have similar rates of in-hospital adverse clinical events in older patients with postoperative delirium who receive an oral low-to-moderate dose antipsychotic drug.PRIMARY FUNDING SOURCE: National Institute on Aging.PMID:37665998 | DOI:10.7326/M22-3021

Efficacy of ablation therapy on clinical outcomes in patients with atrial fibrillation: a systematic review and meta-analysis
CONCLUSION: Ablation significantly reduces the risk of stroke, cardiovascular mortality, all-cause mortality, and HF in AF patients, compared with medical therapy alone, supporting its use in clinical practice.PMID:37663739 | PMC:PMC10473299 | DOI:10.1097/MS9.0000000000000985

Exploring the transformative influence of neuroplasticity on stroke rehabilitation: a narrative review of current evidence
Ann Med Surg (Lond). 2023 Aug 7;85(9):4425-4432. doi: 10.1097/MS9.0000000000001137. eCollection 2023 Sep.ABSTRACTThis review aims to assess the role of neuroplasticity in facilitating stroke recovery and identify the challenges and limitations associated with its implementation. A comprehensive literature search was conducted to identify relevant studies, which were meticulously evaluated to determine the potential solutions for effectively harnessing neuroplasticity. The results indicate that neuroplasticity holds significant promise in stroke rehabilitation; however, individual variability in response to interventions, t...

Effects of Compound Danshen Dripping Pills on Ventricular Remodeling and Cardiac Function after Acute Anterior Wall ST-Segment Elevation Myocardial Infarction (CODE-AAMI): Protocol for a Randomized Placebo-Controlled Trial
This study is designed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of CDDP in improving ventricular remodeling and cardiac function after AAMI on a larger scale.MethodsThis study is a multi-center, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, parallel-group clinical trial. The total of 268 patients with AAMI after primary percutaneous coronary intervention (pPCI) will be randomly assigned 1:1 to the CDDP group (n=134) and control group (n=134) with a follow-up of 48 weeks. Both groups will be treated with standard therapy of ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI), with the CDDP group administrating 20 tablets of CDDP ...

Safeguarding Against Stroke Risk by Statins
Whereas mighty prospective randomized trials —and meta-analyses of these—rightly command the data used to drive guidelines and daily clinical practice, careful long-term follow-up of closely monitored cohorts can generate crucial discoveries not anticipated in a 5-year study. As just one example, findings from lifelong follow-up in the Ame rican Framingham studies and the Whitehall cohorts in the United Kingdom show a strong association between blood pressure in middle years and dementia in later life.

Efficacy and safety of direct oral anticoagulants vs vitamin K antagonists in patients with atrial fibrillation and end-stage renal disease on hemodialysis: A systematic review and meta-analysis
CONCLUSIONS: Among AF patients with ESRD on chronic hemodialysis, the risk of ischemic stroke, ischemic stroke or systemic embolism, minor bleeding, major bleeding, and all-cause mortality is similar in patients treated with DOACs compared to VKAs. Given that the meta-analysis of RCTs on gastrointestinal bleeding did not confirm the results of the meta-analysis of the observational studies, it cannot be concluded that gastrointestinal bleeding is lower among DOAC-treated patients.PROTOCOL REGISTRATION: PROSPERO CRD42023391966.PMID:37648582 | DOI:10.1016/j.ejim.2023.08.020
