The efficacy and safety of pharmacological treatments for post-stroke aphasia.
Conclusions Current evidence suggests that drugs can improve the prognosis of post-stroke aphasia, such as donepezil, memantine. Donepezil has a significant effect in improving the ability of auditory comprehension, naming, repetition and oral expression. Memantine has a significant effect in improving the ability of naming, spontaneous speech and repetition. Bromocriptine showed no significant improvement in the treatment of aphasia after stroke. The trial for galantamine, amphetamine and levodopa in the treatment of aphasia after stroke is limited and inconclusive. PMID: 29984673 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Circadian rhythms may not influence the outcomes of thrombolysis in patients with ischemic stroke: A study from China.
In conclusion, there was no evidence to predict that circadian rhythms could influence the outcomes of AIS patients treated with rt-PA in China, although stroke onset during nighttime might aggravate neurological impairment before treatment. Further, multicenter and prospective clinical trials with larger number of subjects are still needed to draw more reliable conclusions. PMID: 29993298 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Stroke and Coronary Artery Disease Are Associated With Parkinson's Disease.
CONCLUSIONS: Our study suggested that stroke and CAD are associated with PD in two Chinese population-based cohorts, indicating a probable vascular component in the pathogenesis of PD. PMID: 30001757 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

The Relationship Between Ambient Air Pollution and Acute Ischemic Stroke: A Time-Stratified Case-Crossover Study in a City-State With Seasonal Exposure to the Southeast Asian Haze Problem
ConclusionWe found a short-term elevated risk of ischemic stroke after exposure to air pollution. These findings have public health implications for stroke prevention and emergency health services delivery.

Effect of Combined Treatment with MLC601 (NeuroAiD < sup > TM < /sup > ) and Rehabilitation on Post-Stroke Recovery: The CHIMES and CHIMES-E Studies
Conclusions: More subjects on MLC601 improved to functional independence compared to placebo among subjects receiving persistent rehabilitation up to M3. The larger treatment effect of MLC601 was sustained over 2  years which supports the hypothesis that MLC601 combined with rehabilitation might have beneficial and sustained effects on neuro-repair processes after stroke. There is a need for more data on the effect of combining rehabilitation programs with stroke recovery treatments.Cerebrovasc Dis 2018;46:82 –88

Gamma aminobutyric acid (GABA) receptor agonists for acute stroke.
CONCLUSIONS: This review provides moderate-quality evidence that fails to support the use of GABA receptor agonists (chlormethiazole or diazepam) for the treatment of people with acute stroke. More well-designed RCTs with large samples of participants with total anterior circulation syndrome are required to determine if there are benefits for this subgroup. Somnolence and rhinitis are frequent adverse events related to chlormethiazole. PMID: 30376593 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

HDAC9 Polymorphisms Predict Susceptibility, Severity, and Short-Term Outcome of Large Artery Atherosclerotic Stroke in Chinese Population
This study aimed to investigate whether these two polymorphisms were associated with susceptibility, severity, and short-term outcome of LAA stroke in a southern Chinese Han population. rs2074633 and rs28688791 were genotyped using SNPscan technology in 1011 LAA stroke patients and 1121 healthy controls. Stroke severity on admission and short-term outcome were, respectively, assessed by the National Institute of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) score on admission and modified Rankin Scale score at 3  months after stroke onset. rs2074633 (P = 0.039) and rs28688791 (P = 0.025) were associated with risk of LAA stroke. Genetic polymorphisms of methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase C677T and risk of ischemic stroke in a southern Chinese Hakka population
In this study, a total of 1967 ischemic stroke patients and 2565 controls of Chinese Hakka ethnicity were recruited. The MTHFR C677T polymorphisms were genotyped by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplification and microarray method. The risk of ischemic stroke was estimated by logistic regression analysis. The frequencies of CC, CT, and TT genotypes were 52.67% versus 55.63%, 40.31% versus 38.52%, and 7.02% versus 5.85% in patients with ischemic stroke versus controls, respectively. The frequency of T allele was significantly higher in ischemic stroke patients (27.17%) than in controls (25.11%) (P = .026, odds ratio [...

Increased risk of post-stroke epilepsy in Chinese patients with a TRPM6 polymorphism.
CONCLUSION: The TRPM6 rs2274924 polymorphism may be associated with susceptibility to epilepsy following stroke, and the C allele may be associated with increased risk of post-stroke epilepsy. The TRPM6 rs2274924 polymorphism may also influence serum levels of Mg2+ in post-stroke epilepsy patients. PMID: 30739590 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Stroke in patients with prosthetic valve endocarditis : Single-center cohort study in China.
CONCLUSION: Stroke is a common complication in PVE that increases patient mortality. Rheumatic heart disease, double valve replacement, and fungal infection may be risk factors for patients with PVE complicated by stroke. PMID: 31076822 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]
