IJERPH, Vol. 13, Pages 477: H-Type Hypertension and C Reactive Protein in Recurrence of Ischemic Stroke
Hypertension with high homocysteine (HHcy) (H-type hypertension) and C reactive protein (CRP) can increase the incidence of ischemic stroke. However, it is not clear whether recurrent ischemic stroke (RIS) is related to H-type hypertension and CRP. The present study investigated the correlation of H-type hypertension and CRP level with RIS. Totally, 987 consecutive patients with acute ischemic stroke were recruited in a teaching hospital in Henan province, China during March 2014 to March 2015. The demographic and clinical characteristics and blood biochemical parameters of patients were analyzed. Elevated levels of CRP an...

Post-Stroke Epilepsy in Burkina Faso (West Africa)
Post-stroke epilepsy (PSE) is defined as “recurrent seizures following stroke with confirmed diagnosis of epilepsy”. Our objective was to describe the epidemiological, clinical and therapeutic PSE aspects at the Yalgado Ouedraogo Teaching Hospital, the main reference centre for neurological conditions in Burkina Faso. We conducted a retrospective study from January 2006 to December 2014. The data on thirty-two (32) cases of PSE was collected from a total of 1616 patients hospitalized for stroke, representing a rate of 1.98%.

Sonothrombolysis for acute ischemic stroke - Break on through to the other side
Conclusions: Sonothrombolysis appears to be a safe way to augment the effect of tPA without increasing the door to needle time with the added advantage of observing flow through the occluded artery in real time.

Association of lower leukocyte count before thrombolysis with early neurological improvement in acute ischemic stroke patients
Publication date: Available online 17 August 2018Source: Journal of Clinical NeuroscienceAuthor(s): Canhui Tian, Zhong Ji, Wei Xiang, Xiaomei Huang, Shengnan Wang, Yongmin Wu, Suyue Pan, Liang Zhou, Zhen DengAbstractEarly neurological improvement (ENI) after thrombolysis in acute ischemic stroke is associated with a favorable long-term outcome. With the goal to evaluate ENI, we aimed to investigate whether ENI bears a relationship with routine blood tests before thrombolysis. A total of 240 patients with confirmed early ischemic stroke and intravenous recombinant tissue plasminogen activator (rtPA) treatment were enrolled ...

Disability assessment in stroke: Relationship among the pictorial-based Longshi Scale, the Barthel Index, and the modified Rankin Scale.
CONCLUSION: Using the Barthel Index as reference, the proposed Longshi Scale has better ability than the modified Rankin Scale in differentiating stroke patients' disability, especially for those with higher level of activities of daily living. PMID: 33401949 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Risk factors and outcomes of HIV-associated stroke in Zambia
Objective: To compare risk factors and clinical outcomes between people with HIV (PWH) and HIV-uninfected (HIV−) adults with stroke hospitalized in Zambia. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed charts of all adults admitted to the University Teaching Hospital in Lusaka, Zambia with a clinical diagnosis of stroke between October 2018 and March 2019. Standardized data collection instruments were used to collect demographic, clinical, laboratory and imaging results. Comparison between individuals with and without HIV infection was made using t tests for continuous parametric variables, Wilcoxon rank-sum tests for ...

An exploratory descriptive cohort study of 90-day prognosis after acute ischaemic stroke with mechanical thrombectomy
CONCLUSION: Almost half of the surviving patients had a poor prognosis. In our country, this surgery and rehabilitation impose a significant financial burden that needs to be addressed. However, the longer length of hospital stay and higher costs at discharge may be contributing factors to worse outcomes. The outcomes of comprehensive nursing assessment of the patients, including nursing needs, activities of daily living, and neurological function, can predict their outcome.IMPACT STATEMENT: We recommend a comprehensive nursing assessment at discharge that predicts patient outcomes and can be used for subsequent targeted i...
