Impact of inflammation-mediated myocardial fibrosis on the risk of recurrence after successful ablation of atrial fibrillation – the FIBRO-RISK study: Protocol for a non-randomized clinical trial
In conclusion, FIBRO-RISK will be the first CMR-based study that will investigate the impact of inflammation-mediated myocardial fibrosis and ventricular remodeling on the risk of recurrence after successful ablation of AF, aiming to validate inflammatory biomarkers and myocardial fibrosis as predictors for AF recurrence.

Risk factors analysis of nosocomial pneumonia in elderly patients with acute cerebral infraction
In this study, 324 aged 70 years and over patients with ACI who were admitted to the inpatient department of TianJin First Hospital (China) from January 2012 to February 2018 were retrospectively analyzed. The patients were divided into NP group (80 patients) and non-NP group (244 patients) according to whether NP was occurred 48 hours after hospitalization. Baseline profiles and biochemical analyses were compared between 2 groups. Information regarding risk factors for NP in elderly patients with ACI was collected from all patients. Associations with NP and outcome were evaluated. Among the total patients, NP occurred ...

Oral Anticoagulants in Japanese Patients with Atrial Fibrillation and Active Cancer.
Conclusion The rates of stroke or systemic embolism and major bleeding events were not negligible among Japanese cancer patients with AF receiving OACs. Further investigations on the optimal management of Japanese patients with AF and cancer are needed. PMID: 30799369 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Syncope in the German Nationwide inpatient sample - Syncope in atrial fibrillation/flutter is related to pulmonary embolism and is accompanied by higher in-hospital mortality.
CONCLUSIONS: Syncope is a frequent cause for referrals in hospitals. While the overall in-hospital mortality rate is low (<2%), syncope in coprevalence with PE, pneumonia, MI and stroke showed a mortality rate > 8%. Syncope in AF patients had no independent impact on in-hospital mortality. PMID: 30770163 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Risk factors of thromboembolism in nonvalvular atrial fibrillation patients with low CHA2DS2-VASc score
The risk of thromboembolism in patients with CHA2DS2-VASc score of 0 to 1 was low, and the anticoagulant therapy was not recommended. Although the CHA2DS2-VASc score was low, there were still many patients suffered from thrombotic events and stroke. We aim to investigate the risk factors of thrombotic events in nonvalvular atrial fibrillation (NVAF) patients with low CHA2DS2-VASc score. We retrospectively enrolled 595 consecutive NVAF patients with low CHA2DS2-VASc score (male: CHA2DS2-VASc = 0, female: CHA2DS2-VASc = 1). The general clinical data, blood biochemical data, and echocardiography results of the 595 patien...

Thrombolysis in an acute ischemic stroke patient with rivaroxaban anticoagulation: A case report
Rationale: Whether intravenous recombinant tissue plasminogen activator (r-TPA) therapy can be administered in acute ischemic stroke patients treated with novel oral anticoagulants (NOACs), including rivaroxaban, remains controversial. Patient concerns: A 76-year-old woman with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation, who had been receiving 15 mg rivaroxaban once daily, was brought to the emergency department with right-side hemiparesis and aphasia. The onset of neurological deficits occurred 8 hours after the last dose of rivaroxaban administration. Diagnosis: The patient was diagnosed with acute ischemic stroke. Int...

Anticoagulation in atrial fibrillation and cognitive decline: A systematic review and meta-analysis
Conclusion: Anticoagulation is associated with cognitive benefit in participants with AF independent of stroke and TIA, but it was not superior to antiplatelet drugs in reducing the risk of cognitive decline.

Weight and Risk of Incident Atrial Fibrillation —Body Mass Index Variability or Body Mass Gain?
Atrial fibrillation (AF) is an emerging global epidemic associated with significant morbidity and mortality. In recent decades, AF prevalence has exponentially risen and is showing no sign of abating. The condition is associated with numerous complications including stroke, heart failure, and all-cause mortality —risks that are evident even in individuals with few comorbidites.1,2 In the Asia-Pacific region, although AF prevalence is lower than that in Western countries, total AF burden is much higher in this region, in part because of larger populations and rising levels of modifiable cardiovascular risk factors.

Cost-Effectiveness of Bridging Anticoagulation Among Patients with Nonvalvular Atrial Fibrillation
ConclusionsOutpatient bridging anticoagulation can be beneficial and cost-effective for a subset of patients with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation during interruption or initiation of warfarin. Admission for bridging should be avoided.

Resolution of left ventricular thrombus by edoxaban after failed treatment with warfarin overdose: A case report
Rationale: Although novel oral-anticoagulants are widely used in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) for stroke prevention, there was only limited evidence for their use in left ventricular (LV) thrombus. Patient concerns: A 41-year-old man who presented with acute onset of right-hand clumsiness and aphasia even under high international normalized ratio (INR: 7.64) from warfarin use. He was previously treated with warfarin for the LV thrombus and non-valvular AF. Brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed multiple acute infarction in the cortex of the bilateral frontal lobes, left parietal lobe, and bilateral ce...

Impact of atrial fibrillation on in-hospital mortality of ischemic stroke patients and identification of promoting factors of atrial thrombi – Results from the German nationwide inpatient sample and a single-center retrospective cohort
Ischemic stroke is one of the leading causes of death and disability. Atrial fibrillation (AF) is a well-recognized risk factor for ischemic stroke. We aimed to investigate the impact of AF on in-hospital mortality of ischemic stroke patients and to identify parameters associated with intra-cardiac thrombogenic material. Patients were selected by screening the nationwide sample for ischemic stroke by ICD-Code (I63), stratified for AF. In this cohort, the association between in-hospital deaths and AF was investigated. In a second study, we performed a retrospective analysis of patients who underwent transesophageal echoc...
