Associations of Atrial Fibrillation After Noncardiac Surgery With Stroke, Subsequent Arrhythmia, and Death : A Cohort Study
CONCLUSION: Postoperative AF after noncardiac surgery is associated with similar risk for thromboembolism compared with nonoperative AF. Our findings have potentially important implications for the early postsurgical and subsequent management of postoperative AF.PRIMARY FUNDING SOURCE: National Institute on Aging.PMID:35878404 | DOI:10.7326/M22-0434

Epidemiology of subclinical atrial fibrillation in patients with cardiac implantable electronic devices: A systematic review and meta-regression
CONCLUSIONS: In this systematic review and meta-regression analysis, SCAF was frequent among CIED recipients and was non-linearly associated with age and follow-up time. Older age, higher thromboembolic risk, and several cardiovascular comorbidities were associated with presence of SCAF.PMID:35817660 | DOI:10.1016/j.ejim.2022.06.023

Stroke severity modified the effect of chronic atrial fibrillation on the outcome of thrombolytic therapy
This study was designed to identify high-risk patients with chronic AF who had undergone thrombolysis treatment and to explore whether the baseline National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) could be used to distinguish poor clinical outcomes in thrombolyzed patients.

Atrial fibrillation
(AF) is the most common cardiac arrhythmia, with a high prevalence in elderly individuals. It is associated with increased mortality and morbidity, as a result of stroke, systemic embolism and heart failure. Stroke prevention is central in the management of AF. AF is characterized according to stroke risk, symptom severity, severity of AF burden and substrate severity under a novel 4S-AF scheme. The Atrial fibrillation Better Care (ABC) pathway provides a simple strategy that streamlines integrated management of patients with AF.

Incidence of nonvalvular atrial fibrillation and oral anticoagulant prescribing in England, 2009 to 2019: A cohort study
ConclusionsThe incidence of NVAF increased between 2009 and 2015, before plateauing. Underprescribing of OACs in NVAF is associated with a range of comorbidities, ethnicity, and socioeconomic factors, demonstrating the need for initiatives to reduce inequalities in the care for AF patients.

Evolving concepts in the management of antithrombotic therapy in patients undergoing transcatheter aortic valve implantation
Eur J Intern Med. 2022 May 24:S0953-6205(22)00171-6. doi: 10.1016/j.ejim.2022.05.002. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThromboembolic and bleeding complications negatively impact recovery and survival after transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI). Particularly, there is a considerable risk of ischaemic stroke and vascular access related bleeding, as well as spontaneous gastro-intestinal bleeding. Therefore, benefit and harm of antithrombotic therapy should be carefully balanced. This review summarizes current evidence on peri- and post-procedural antithrombotic treatment. Indeed, in recent years, the management of anti...

CHA2DS2-VASC Score Predicts the Risk of Stroke in Patients Hospitalized to the Internal Medicine Department Without Known Atrial Fibrillation
ConclusionsThe CHA2DS2-VASC score is a predictor for CVA/TIA during the first year after hospitalization in patients without AF. High CHA2DS2-VASC scores warrant work-up for occult AF/AFL and other risk factors for CVA/TIA.
