Our Diets Are Changing Because of the Coronavirus Pandemic. Is It for the Better?
The coronavirus pandemic has changed a lot about modern American life: how we work, socialize, and even how we eat. Dining out is a distant memory. But nutritionally, people weren’t exactly thriving in pre-pandemic America. “Before COVID-19 came along, it was increasingly clear that the diet quality and nutritional status of Americans was terrible,” says Dr. Walter Willett, professor of epidemiology and nutrition at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. More than 40% of U.S. adults are obese. After years of declines, heart disease death rates are on the rise again. So are rates of obesity-linked canc...

Repeatability and reproducibility of pulse wave velocity in relation to hemodynamics and sodium excretion in stable patients with hypertension
This study examined the repeatability and reproducibility of PWV, and whether hemodynamics and sodium excretion impact on PWV in hypertensive patients remaining on stable medication. Methods: Office blood pressure (BP), heart rate (HR), carotid--femoral PWV and central BP (SphygmoCor device), impedance cardiography (HOTMAN device) and 24-h urinary sodium excretion (UNa) were measured at baseline and after 4 weeks in 74 hypertensive patients (age 56.8 ± 11.5 years, mean ± SD). Two PWV measurements were performed at each visit. Results: Intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) and 95% confidence interval (95%...

Dapagliflozin Influences Ventricular Hemodynamics and Exercise-Induced Pulmonary Hypertension in Type 2 Diabetes Patients - A Randomized Controlled Trial.
CONCLUSIONS: Dapagliflozin significantly improved RVSP and LVFP during exercise in patients with T2DM and cardiovascular risk, which may contribute to favorable effects on heart failure. PMID: 32921680 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Food as Prevention – Rising to Nutritional Challenges
Mothers and their children gather at a community nutrition centre in the little village of Rantolava, Madagascar, to learn more about a healthy diet. Credit: Alain Rakotondravony/IPSBy Gabriele RiccardiNAPLES, Italy, Nov 25 2020 (IPS) The risks factors contributing to the dramatic rise in non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in recent decades have been known for a long time but the Covid-19 pandemic has brutally exposed our collective failure to deal with them. Reporting on the findings of the latest Global Burden of Disease Study, The Lancet warns of a “perfect storm” created by the interaction of the highly infectious C...

The Use of Clevidipine for Hypertension in Pediatric Patients Receiving Mechanical Circulatory Support
Conclusions: In this pediatric cardiac cohort, clevidipine infusions were effective at hypertension management and were not associated with hypotensive or code events. This report details the largest cohort and longest duration of clevidipine administration within a pediatric population and did not demonstrate hypotensive events, even among neonatal populations. Clevidipine may be a reasonable cost-effective alternative antihypertensive medication compared to traditional short-acting agents.

Impact of salt intake reduction on CVD mortality in Costa Rica: A scenario modelling study
The objective of this study was to estimate the impact of reducing salt intake on CVD mortality in Costa Rica using a scenario simulation model. The Preventable Risk Integrated ModEl (PRIME) was used to estimate the number of deaths that would be averted or delayed in the Costa Rican population by following the national and the international guidelines to reduce salt consumption, according to two scenarios: A) 46% reduction and B) 15% reduction, both at an energy intake of 2171 kcal. The scenarios estimated that between 4% and 13%, respectively, of deaths due to CVD would be prevented or postponed. The hig hest percentages...

A Method for Estimating 24-hour Urinary Sodium Excretion by Casual Urine Specimen in Chinese Hypertensive Patients.
CONCLUSION: Sun_C method may prove a reasonable method to estimate the daily dietary sodium intakes (particularly in the range of 6 g/d - 12 g/d of NaCl) in Chinese hypertensive patients using spot urine measurements. As the amount of data increases in the future, the performance of our formulae will be further improved. PMID: 33491075 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Summary: International Kidney Cancer Symposium
Conclusions:  Ideal ischemia time is 20-25 minutes or less improves short and long term renal function. >25 minutes carried 5 year risk of new onset stage 4 CKD No differences on GFR for cold vs. warm ischemia times Preoperative GFR and the percent of kidney preserved was a better predictor of post op GFR.  No ischemia preserves renal function better than warm. Longer cold ischemia times were equivalent to shorter warm ischemia times. Quality and quantity of the remaining kidney is associated with ultimate renal function. Cutaneous Iontophoresis of Vasoactive Medications in Patients with Scleroderma ‐ Associated Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension
ConclusionsPatients with SSc-PAH have a lower cutaneous microvascular response to a prostacyclin analog treprostinil and the sGC activator A-350619 when compared with patients with SSc and no evidence of PH on screening tests, presumably due to a peripheral reduction in prostacyclin receptor expression and nitric oxide bioavailability.

Impaired renal function and mortalities in acute heart failure with different phenotypes
ConclusionsOn-admission IRF was independently predictive of long-term mortality in patients hospitalized for HF, irrespective of HF phenotypes. Furthermore, IRF was also associated with short-term mortality in HFrEF and HFmrEF, but not in HFpEF.
