Stroke: A retrospective review of the incidence and epidemiology in a South African academic hospital emergency department
CONCLUSIONS: Stroke is an important healthcare concern for SA. Our study demonstrated a lower mean age of patients presenting with stroke compared with high- and upper middle-income countries, and a higher proportion of haemorrhagic strokes. Several modifiable risk factors such as hypertension and diabetes were identified. Data collection on a regional and national level is important to drive targeted healthcare initiatives.PMID:34949308 | DOI:10.7196/SAMJ.2021.v111i12.15682

Abstract 101: Gender Has Differential Effects on Non-Hemorrhagic Stroke Outcomes Session Title: Poster Session I
Conclusion: Men with non-hemorrhagic stroke were more likely to have dyslipidemia and history of coronary artery disease. This, however, did not translate into increased mortality in younger men.Gender appears to have a differential effect on non-hemorrhagic stroke outcomes which warrants future investigation.

Fuzzy cognitive map based approach for determining the risk of ischemic stroke
In this study, the soft computing method known as fuzzy cognitive mapping was proposed for diagnosis of the risk of ischemic stroke. Non-linear Hebbian learning method was used for fuzzy cognitive maps training. In the proposed method, the risk rate for each person was determined based on the opinions of the neurologists. The accuracy of the proposed model was tested using 10-fold cross-validation, for 110 real cases, and the results were compared with those of support vector machine and K-nearest neighbours. The proposed system showed a superior performance with a total accuracy of (93.6 ± 4.5)%. The da...

Diabetic Rodent Models for Chronic Stroke Studies
We present different pathophysiological features of diabetes in each rodent model along with the advantages and disadvantages of each model. Utilizing these models may aid the advancement of novel treatments and therapies to lower ischemic brain damage in patients of diabetes.PMID:36715951 | DOI:10.1007/978-1-0716-2926-0_30

Utility of Workup for Thrombophilias in a Single Center - A Qualitative Perspective (P1.125)
ConclusionStroke is considered cryptogenic in about 30-40 percent cases. Hypercoagulable testing is often ordered in this clinical setting. So far our results are consistent with other reports in the literature that such testing has limited clinical utility. Our results highlight the need to develop stringent clinical guidelines for HT in the setting of ischemic strokes.Disclosure: Dr. Shah has nothing to disclose. Dr. Anderson has nothing to disclose. Non ‐obstructive carotid atherosclerosis and patent foramen ovale in young adults with cryptogenic stroke
ConclusionsThis study demonstrates that NOCA is common in young adults with CS. NOCA is negatively associated with PFO. Detecting NOCA is an important component of stroke investigation in young adults.

Does bariatric surgery change the risk of acute ischemic stroke in patients with a history of transient ischemic attack? A nationwide analysis
CONCLUSIONS: After analyzing nationwide information, we conclude bariatric surgery helps decrease risk of AIS in patients with a history of TIA. However, this comparison is limited by the nature of the database; further studies are needed to better understand these results.PMID:36581552 | DOI:10.1016/j.soard.2022.11.013

Diabetic aggravation of stroke and animal models.
Abstract Cerebral ischemia in diabetics results in severe brain damage. Different animal models of cerebral ischemia have been used to study the aggravation of ischemic brain damage in the diabetic condition. Since different disease conditions such as diabetes differently affect outcome following cerebral ischemia, the Stroke Therapy Academic Industry Roundtable (STAIR) guidelines recommends use of diseased animals for evaluating neuroprotective therapies targeted to reduce cerebral ischemic damage. The goal of this review is to discuss the technicalities and pros/cons of various animal models of cerebral ischemia...
