Association between periodontitis and bipolar disorder: A nationwide cohort study
Whether periodontitis is a risk factor for developing bipolar disorders (BD) has not been investigated. We aimed to determine whether periodontitis is associated with the subsequent development of BD and examine the risk factors for BD among patients with periodontitis. Using ambulatory and inpatient claims data from the National Health Insurance Research Database (NHIRD), we identified 12,337 patients who were aged at least 20 years and newly diagnosed with periodontitis between 2000 and 2004. The date of the first claim with a periodontitis diagnosis was set as the index date. For each patient with periodontitis, 4 subj...

The first case of traumatic internal carotid arterial dissection? Verneuil's case report from 1872.
Authors: Grond-Ginsbach C, Meisenbacher K, Böckler D, Leys D Abstract Dissecting aneurysms of the internal carotid artery were considered as very rare disorders before the seventies. Undiagnosed carotid-artery dissections, however, may have gone hidden behind earlier reports of delayed "apoplexy" due to "traumatic carotid thrombosis". Here, we present a case report of delayed stroke after trauma, published by Aristide Verneuil in 1872 in the Bulletin de l'Académie de Médecine and cited under the heading of vascular rupture and dissecting aneurysm by Heinrich Quincke in 1876. Verneuil's case report represents, to...

The role of Nrf2 in Neural stem/Progenitors cells: from maintaining stemness and self-renewal to promoting differentiation capability and facilitating therapeutic application in neurodegenerative disease.
Abstract Neurodegenerative diseases (NDs) cause progressive loss of neurons in nervous system. NDs are categorized as acute NDs such as stroke and head injury, besides chronic NDs including Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, Huntington's diseases, Friedreich's Ataxia, Multiple Sclerosis. The exact etiology of NDs is not understood but oxidative stress, inflammation and synaptic dysfunction are main hallmarks. Oxidative stress leads to free radical attack on neural cells which contributes to protein misfolding, glia cell activation, mitochondrial dysfunction, impairment of DNA repair system and subsequently cellular death. ...

Pharmacological blockers of CCR5 and CXCR4 improve recovery after traumatic brain injury.
We examined the effect of maraviroc, a CCR5 antagonist used in HIV patients as a viral entry inhibitor, and of plerixafor (AMD3100), a CXCR4 antagonist used in cancer patients as an immune-modulator, on mice subjected to closed head injury (CHI). Mice were treated with maraviroc or plerixafor after CHI for the following 4 or 5 days, respectively. Neurobehavior was assessed according to the Neurological Severity Score; cognitive tests were performed by using the Y-maze, Barnes maze and the novel object recognition test; anxiety was evaluated with the open field test. The mice were sacrificed and brain tissues were collect...

IJERPH, Vol. 18, Pages 10633: Socio-Economic Disparities in Access to Diagnostic Neuroimaging Services in the United Kingdom: A Systematic Review
This study includes the analysis of diagnostic imaging used for dementia, minor head injury, stroke, cancer, epilepsy, chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy and Parkinson’s disease. With this study, we aim to assess the health inequalities at disease diagnosis. Methods: Using Medline (via Ovid), PubMed and Web of Science databases as sources of information, we critically appraise existing studies on neuroimaging use in the U.K. health care system, published between January 2010 and February 2021. Findings: A total of 18 studies were included in this research, revealing that there was an increase in patients o...

When angels catch us – Madeline ’ s hysterectomy story
How do we know there are angels? Do we have our own special guardian angels watching over us? How many times have we almost entered into danger only to change our minds at the last minute? Is this simply being lucky or has there been an unconscious inner voice warning us? I have truly believed for a long time that there are God’s angels watching over us and over the years there have been occasions when I have had warnings of some impending doom and thankfully avoided tragedy. Sometimes I’ve just had feelings or a “sixth sense” and the negative event still happened but somehow I had felt that premonition. Wa...

Low Evidence for Tinnitus Risk Factors: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis
ConclusionsThese systematic review and meta-analysis confirm a number of otological and non-otological risk factors for tinnitus. By highlighting major gaps in knowledge, our synthesis can help provide direction for future research that will shed light on the pathophysiology, improve management strategies, and inform more effective preventions.

Consensus Statement on Visual Rehabilitation in Mild Traumatic Brain Injury
Optometric visual rehabilitation therapy has been used for a variety of visual disorders. Descriptively named entities such as posttrauma visual syndrome, visual midline shift syndrome, and vertical heterophoria syndrome are frequently diagnosed by neuro-optometrists and/or behavioral optometrists in patients after stroke or head injury or in the setting of dizziness and/or headache. The scientific underpinnings of these diagnoses and treatments are weak, and published clinical studies comprise case reports and case series without comparison to control populations. Neuro-ophthalmologists are frequently questioned by patien...

Management dilemma in a rare case of pituitary apoplexy with akinetic mutism in the setting of ruptured junctional brain aneurysm: A case report and literature review
CONCLUSION: Pituitary apoplexy with ruptured A1-Acom junction aneurysm with nonfunctioning pituitary macroadenoma is rare, and its presentation with akinetic mutism has not been reported. As there is scarce literature suggesting an association between pituitary apoplexy and ruptured aneurysm, it is challenging to comment regarding its pathogenesis. Although akinetic mutism generally has a poor prognosis, it may respond to Levodopa with a better outcome.PMID:36751455 | PMC:PMC9899474 | DOI:10.25259/SNI_942_2022

Know your stroke mimics
A developmentally normal and previously well 15-year-old boy, presented to hospital with a 4-hour history of gradually worsening, throbbing, left-sided headache spreading across his whole head. Four hours prior, he could not read properly or string words together and felt tired. He developed a headache followed by expressive aphasia, agitation and vomiting. A right-sided lower facial droop was noted that resolved in a couple of hours. He played a rugby match in the morning and there was a history of minor head injury without loss of consciousness. He started to develop self-resolving apnoeic episodes each lasting for 30&nd...

ADVANCE-TBI study protocol: traumatic brain injury outcomes in UK military personnel serving in Afghanistan between 2003 and 2014 - a longitudinal cohort study
Introduction Outcomes of traumatic brain injury (TBI) are highly variable, with cognitive and psychiatric problems often present in survivors, including an increased dementia risk in the long term. Military personnel are at an increased occupational risk of TBI, with high rates of complex polytrauma including TBI characterising the UK campaign in Afghanistan. The ArmeD SerVices TrAuma and RehabilitatioN OutComE (ADVANCE)-TBI substudy will describe the patterns, associations and long-term outcomes of TBI in the established ADVANCE cohort. Methods and analysis The ADVANCE cohort comprises 579 military personnel exposed to m...

Neurotic symptoms profile in a day hospital patients with an anamnesis of head injury in the past
CONCLUSIONS: Patients with a history of head injuries have a higher global severity of neurotic disorders symptoms than people without such history. Men experience head injuries more often than women, and the risk of developing symptoms of neurotic disorders is higher in men. It seems that patients with head injuries are a special group when it comes to reporting some psychopathological symptoms, especially in the group of men.PMID:37074830 | DOI:10.12740/PP/OnlineFirst/133636
