Predictors of in‐hospital death and symptomatic intracranial hemorrhage in patients with acute ischemic stroke treated with thrombolytic therapy: Paul Coverdell Acute Stroke Registry 2008–2012
ConclusionsIn this study of acute ischemic stroke patients, older age, male gender, National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale score, history of myocardial infarction or coronary artery disease, and history of atrial fibrillation were associated with increased in‐hospital death among patients receiving intravenous tissue plasminogen activator. Among patients treated with intravenous tissue plasminogen activator, in‐hospital mortality and symptomatic intracerebral hemorrhage rates were similar between those treated within three‐hours of time last known to be well and those treated between three and 4·5 hours after this time.

Herpes zoster as a risk factor for stroke and TIA: A retrospective cohort study in the UK
Conclusion: HZ is an independent risk factor for vascular disease in the UK population, particularly for stroke, TIA, and MI in subjects affected before the age of 40 years. In older subjects, better ascertainment of vascular risk factors and earlier intervention may explain the reduction in risk of stroke after the occurrence of HZ.

Electrocardiographic Assessment of Coronary Artery Disease and Stroke Risk Factors in Rural and Urban Tanzania: A Case–control Study
Conclusions: This is the first published study of ECG assessment of CAD and other stroke risk factors in an incident population of stroke cases in sub-Saharan Africa. It suggests that concomitant CAD in black African stroke cases is more common than previously suggested.

Discrimination of Acute Ischemic Stroke from Nonischemic Vertigo in Patients Presenting with Only Imbalance
We examined 332 consecutive patients with an acute feeling of imbalance who showed no neurologic findings or responsible lesions on CT scan at the hyperacute phase. We examined their clinical backgrounds, physical findings, and laboratory examinations, with ischemic stroke diagnosed by later CT and/or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). We identified 41 (12.3%) ischemic stroke patients. Atrial Fibrillation, Stroke, and Anticoagulation in Medicare Beneficiaries: Trends by Age, Sex, and Race, 1992-2010 Stroke
Conclusions Ischemic stroke rates among Medicare AF patients decreased significantly in all demographic subpopulations from 1992–2010, coincident with increasing warfarin use. Ischemic stroke rates remained higher and warfarin use rates remained lower for women and blacks with AF, groups whose baseline CHADS scores were higher.

Incidence, Trends, and Predictors of Ischemic Stroke 1 Year After an Acute Myocardial Infarction Clinical Sciences
Conclusions— The risk of ischemic stroke within a year after myocardial infarction is substantial but has clearly been reduced during the studied time period. The major predictive factors found to correlate well with previous investigations. Reperfusion treatment, thrombocyte aggregation inhibition, and lipid lowering are the main contributors to the observed risk reduction.

Trends in oral anticoagulant choice for acute stroke patients with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation in Japan: The SAMURAI‐NVAF Study
ConclusionsWarfarin use at acute hospital discharge was still common in the initial years after approval of nonvitamin K antagonist oral anticoagulants, although nonvitamin K antagonist oral anticoagulant users increased gradually. The index stroke was milder and ischemia‐risk indices were lower in nonvitamin K antagonist oral anticoagulant users than in warfarin users. Early initiation of nonvitamin K antagonist oral anticoagulants seemed safe.

Subclinical cardiac dysfunction increases the risk of stroke and dementia: The Rotterdam Study
Conclusions: In elderly free of clinical cardiac disease, worse diastolic function is associated with clinical stroke, dementia, and silent infarcts on MRI, whereas worse systolic function is related only to clinical stroke. These findings can form the basis for future research on the utility of cardiac function as potential intervention target for prevention of neurologic diseases.

Association Between Anthropometric Measurements and Stroke in Patients with Low CHADS2 Score (P1.226)
Conclusion: In contrast to the available literature, we found that patients with low risk CHADS2 score with subsequent acute stroke were taller with statistical significance than those with high CHADS2 score. The implication of this finding is that such variations in anthropometric measurements might predispose patients with atrial fibrillation to higher risk of stroke regardless of their CHADS2 score. In-Hospital Mechanisms of Stroke in Patients on Hemodialysis: A 10-Year Retrospective Study (P6.044)
