Targeting the role of lipoprotein (a) in stroke.
Authors: Garelnabi M, Mazhar Z, Hughes A Abstract Stroke is the third leading cause of death in the United States, behind only heart disease and cancer, with over 140,000 associated deaths per year. Considerable research is ongoing to examine the role of modifiable risk factors which may cause or contribute to a stroke occurring. Although age and family history are generally considered to be major risk factors, there are several modifiable and non-modifiable risk factors that are linked to the pathogenesis of a stroke. Lipoprotein (a), or Lp(a), is a type of low-density lipoprotein containing an integral apoB100 co...

Adiposity and risk of ischaemic and haemorrhagic stroke in 0 ·5 million Chinese men and women: a prospective cohort study
Publication date: June 2018 Source:The Lancet Global Health, Volume 6, Issue 6 Author(s): Zhengming Chen, Andri Iona, Sarah Parish, Yiping Chen, Yu Guo, Fiona Bragg, Ling Yang, Zheng Bian, Michael V Holmes, Sarah Lewington, Ben Lacey, Ruqin Gao, Fang Liu, Zengzhi Zhang, Junshi Chen, Robin G Walters, Rory Collins, Robert Clarke, Richard Peto, Liming Li Background China has high stroke rates despite the population being relatively lean. Uncertainty persists about the relevance of adiposity to risk of stroke types. We aimed to assess the associations of adiposity with incidence of stroke types and effect mediation by blood p...

Traditional and Genetic Risk Score and Stroke Risk Prediction in Korea.
CONCLUSIONS: TRS and GRS were both independently associated with stroke risk. Using genetic variants in addition to traditional risk factors may be the most accurate way of predicting stroke risk, particularly in relatively younger individuals. PMID: 30073812 [PubMed]

Accelerated Risk of Premature Ischemic Stroke in 5-Year Survivors of Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma.
CONCLUSION: Not only was the stroke risk in NPC survivors higher than that in the general population, but the onset age was also 10 years earlier. Future survivorship care should include ischemic stroke as a late complication, for its proper prevention and management. IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE: Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is endemic in Taiwan, and its 5-year survival is 65.2%. With the increased 5-year cancer survivors, survivorship has become an important issue. However, research on NPC survivorship is very rare. To the authors' knowledge, this is the first population-based study on long-term NPC survivors. This s...

Stroke Treatment in the Setting of Systemic Disease
AbstractWhile the possible stroke risks for more prevalent conditions, such as cardiac disease or cancer, are important to recognize, there are other equally devastating systemic diseases that can affect younger adults and, if not cautious, may be misdiagnosed if stroke is the initial presentation.Purpose of reviewWe aim to discuss treatments of three rarer, but important systemic diseases associated with an increased incidence of ischemic stroke, specifically sickle cell anemia, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), and Takayasu ’s arteritis.Recent findingsGiven that individuals with these diseases are now living longer, ...

Association of physical activity with stroke among long-term colorectal cancer survivors
ConclusionsModerate frequency of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (5-9 time/week) and walking (4-5 time/week) significantly lowers the risk of stroke, whereas high-frequency physical activity reduces the benefits of physical activity.Implications for Cancer SurvivorsPhysical activity with moderate frequency is important in the prevention of stroke for long-term colorectal cancer survivors.

Cancer-associated stroke: a study of prevalence and predictors among ischaemic stroke patients
CONCLUSIONS: A high prevalence of systemic cancer, of any type, as well as active and occult, was found among patients with ischaemic stroke. The presence of ischaemic lesions in several vascular territories and some laboratory markers could be factors to consider in attributing the stroke to cancer or looking for an occult neoplasm in some patients.PMID:36908032 | DOI:10.33588/rn.7606.2022414
