Consumption of flavonoid-rich fruits, flavonoids from fruits, and stroke risk: a prospective cohort study.
Abstract We sought to examine the prospective associations of specific fruit consumption, in particular flavonoid-rich fruit (FRF) consumption, with the risk of stroke and subtypes of stroke in a Japanese population. A study followed a total of 39,843 men and 47,334 women aged 44-76 years, and free of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and cancer at baseline since 1995 and 1998 to the end of 2009 and 2012, respectively. Data on total and specific FRF consumption for each participant were obtained using a self-administrated food frequency questionnaire. The hazard ratios (HRs) of stroke in relation to total and spec...

Habitual flavonoid intake and ischemic stroke incidence in the Danish Diet, Cancer, and Health Cohort
CONCLUSIONS: These findings suggest that moderate habitual consumption of healthy flavonoid-rich foods is associated with a lower risk of ischemic stroke and further investigation is therefore warranted.PMID:33963737 | DOI:10.1093/ajcn/nqab138

Systematic Understanding of the Mechanism of Baicalin against Ischemic Stroke through a Network Pharmacology Approach.
Authors: Xu T, Ma C, Fan S, Deng N, Lian Y, Tan L, Du W, Zhang S, Liu S, Ren B, Li Z, Wang Q, Wang X, Cheng F Abstract Ischemic stroke is accompanied by high mortality and morbidity rates. At present, there is no effective clinical treatment. Alternatively, traditional Chinese medicine has been widely used in China and Japan for the treatment of ischemic stroke. Baicalin is a flavonoid extracted from Scutellaria baicalensis that has been shown to be effective against ischemic stroke; however, its mechanism has not been fully elucidated. Based on network pharmacology, we explored the potential mechanism of baicalin ...

Myricetin against myocardial injury in rat heat stroke model.
CONCLUSIONS: Our results indicate that myricetin diminishes myocardial injury as well as lethality in heat stroke by up-regulating HSP-72 and show promise as a novel prevention therapeutic for heat stroke. PMID: 32371315 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Neuroprotective Strategies for Stroke by Natural Products: Advances and Perspectives
Curr Neuropharmacol. 2023 Jul 17. doi: 10.2174/1570159X21666230717144752. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTCerebral ischemic stroke is a disease with high prevalence and incidence. Its management focuses on rapid reperfusion with intravenous thrombolysis and endovascular thrombectomy. Both therapeutic strategies reduce disability, but the therapy time window is short, and the risk of bleeding is high. Natural products (NPs) have played a key role in drug discovery, especially for cancer and infectious diseases. However, they have made little progress in clinical translation and pose challenges to the treatment of stroke. Rece...

Mediterranean diet: The role of long-chain ω-3 fatty acids in fish; polyphenols in fruits, vegetables, cereals, coffee, tea, cacao and wine; probiotics and vitamins in prevention of stroke, age-related cognitive decline, and Alzheimer disease.
Authors: Román GC, Jackson RE, Gadhia R, Román AN, Reis J Abstract The mechanisms of action of the dietary components of the Mediterranean diet are reviewed in prevention of cardiovascular disease, stroke, age-associated cognitive decline and Alzheimer disease. A companion article provides a comprehensive review of extra-virgin olive oil. The benefits of consumption of long-chain ω-3 fatty acids are described. Fresh fish provides eicosapentaenoic acid while α-linolenic acid is found in canola and soybean oils, purslane and nuts. These ω-3 fatty acids interact metabolically with ω-6 fatty acids mainly linoleic...

Molecules, Vol. 27, Pages 5783: Therapeutic Effect of Icaritin on Cerebral Ischemia-Reperfusion-Induced Senescence and Apoptosis in an Acute Ischemic Stroke Mouse Model
ing-Hwa Liu An ischemic stroke is brain damage caused by interruption of blood supply to the brain that can cause death and long-term disability. New medical strategies or therapies are urgently needed for ischemic stroke. Icaritin (ICT) is a metabolite of icariin (ICA), which are two active flavonoid components extracted from Herba epimedii and considered neuroprotective agents in animal models of Alzheimer’s disease and ischemic stroke. The therapeutic effect of ICT on ischemic still remains to be clarified. The aim of this study was to investigate the therapeutic effect of ICT on cerebral ischemia-repe...

Rutin protects hemorrhagic stroke development via supressing oxidative stress and inflammatory events in a zebrafish model
Eur J Pharmacol. 2022 Apr 22:174973. doi: 10.1016/j.ejphar.2022.174973. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTIntracerebral haemorrhagic (ICH) stroke is a major cause of death and disability globally, with no proper treatment available so far. Rutin, a dietary flavonoid, has shown protection against cerebral ischemic stroke due to its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory attributes. However, the efficacy of rutin against ICH stroke remained unexplored. Therefore, in the current study, we investigated the effect of rutin in an ICH stroke zebrafish larva model. The larvae were exposed to atorvastatin (1.25 μM) in system water for indu...
