The “know your numbers” program in Atahualpa — A pilot study aimed to reduce cardiovascular diseases and stroke burden in rural communities of developing countries
The burden of cardiovascular diseases and stroke is steadily increasing in many low- and middle-income countries, to the point that these conditions have been considered as the new epidemics of the developing world . The World Health Organization has set a global goal of reducing deaths from non-communicable diseases (including stroke and ischemic heart disease) by 25% by 2025 . It seems that people living in rural communities are most vulnerable to these “new epidemics”. There, a process of epidemiologic transition is aggravated by poor access to medical care and by income issues that preclude people to afford the cos...

Antithrombotic treatment after stroke due to intracerebral haemorrhage
CONCLUSIONS: We did not identify beneficial or hazardous effects of short-term prophylactic dose parenteral anticoagulation and long-term oral antiplatelet therapy after ICH on important outcomes. Although there was a significant reduction in MACE and all major occlusive vascular events after long-term treatment with therapeutic dose oral anticoagulation for atrial fibrillation after ICH, the pooled estimates were imprecise, the certainty of evidence was only moderate, and effects on other important outcomes were uncertain. Large RCTs with a low risk of bias are required to resolve the ongoing dilemmas about antithrombotic...

Establishment and validation of a prediction model for ischemic stroke risks in patients with type 2 diabetes
Diabetes is a formidable global health threat because of its high prevalence and numerous complications. Furthermore, diabetes is a leading cause of mortality and microvascular and macrovascular diseases, including coronary diseases, cerebrovascular diseases, and peripheral vascular diseases. A recent study reports that risk of stroke in patients with type 2 diabetes is two to five times higher than the general population[1]. The World Health Organization MONICA project reported that stroke incidence is higher among ethnic Chinese population than among Western population [2].

COVID-19 induced ischemic stroke and mechanisms of viral entry in brain and clot formation: a systematic review and current update
Conclusion: Data available in the literature is not adequate to come to a conclusion. Therefore, there is a need to carry out further studies to delineate the possible association between SCV-2 induced IS.PMID:35412938 | DOI:10.1080/00207454.2022.2056460

Tips to reduce stroke in the diverse communities
Stroke is the second-leading cause of death worldwide, according to the World Health Organization. In the U.S., about 800,000 strokes occur per year. Of all strokes, 87% are ischemic. This means they occur when a clot blocks a blood vessel in the brain and stops blood flow. The remaining 13% are hemorrhagic, where a blood vessel ruptures and causes bleeding into brain tissue."In the U.S., stroke has dropped to the fifth-leading cause of death, due…

Ischemic stroke and the use of etonogestrel implant on adolescent
There is few scientific evidence of good quality on the relationship between an ischemic stroke and the isolated use of progestins. In general, it does not suggest an elevation of this risk. The World Health Organization (WHO) classifies continuation of the etonogestrel implant as category 3 if the event occurred while using it.

Different types of percutaneous endovascular interventions for acute ischemic stroke
CONCLUSIONS: This review did not establish any difference in safety and effectiveness between the thrombo-aspiration approach and stent-retrieval thrombectomy for treating people with AIS. Furthermore, the combined group did not show any obvious advantage over either intervention applied alone.PMID:37249304 | DOI:10.1002/14651858.CD014676.pub2

The Outcome of Status Epilepticus and Long-Term Follow-Up
Conclusion: This study highlights the importance of regular care and patient follow-up. Introduction Status epilepticus (SE) is a condition and most extreme form of epilepsy (1), which leads to abnormal and prolonged seizure (at least 5 min). In case SE persists over 30 min, it may have severe long-term consequences (2). Referring to the new classification scheme of SE, there are two operational dimensions of the definition: time point 1 (T1) is associated with abnormally prolonged seizure, when therapy should be initiated, while time point 2 (T2) is related to the time of on-going seizure activity involving a risk...

Long-term Fine Particulate Matter Exposure and Nonaccidental and Cause-specific Mortality in a Large National Cohort of Chinese Men
Conclusions: Long-term exposure to PM2.5 was associated with nonaccidental, CVD, lung cancer, and COPD mortality in China. The IER estimator may underestimate the excess relative risk of cause-specific mortality due to long-term exposure to PM2.5 over the exposure range experienced in China and other low- and middle-income countries. https://doi.org/10.1289/EHP1673 Received: 24 February 2017 Revised: 01 September 2017 Accepted: 05 September 2017 Published: 07 November 2017 Address correspondence to M. Patches of different types for carotid patch angioplasty.
CONCLUSIONS: The number of outcome events is too small to allow conclusions, and more trial data are required to establish whether any differences do exist. Nevertheless, there is little to no difference in effect on perioperative and long-term ipsilateral stroke between vein and any synthetic patch material. Some evidence indicates that other synthetic patches (e.g. PTFE) may be superior to Dacron grafts in terms of perioperative stroke and TIA rates, and both early and late arterial re-stenosis and occlusion. Pseudoaneurysm formation may be more common after use of a vein patch than after use of a synthetic patch. Bovin...

New Data From Two Large Studies Reinforce Effectiveness of Dual Pathway Inhibition (DPI) with XARELTO ® (rivaroxaban) Plus Aspirin in Patients with Coronary Artery Disease (CAD) and/or Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD)
RARITAN, N.J., May 23, 2022 – Findings from the XARELTO® (rivaroxaban) Phase 3 COMPASS Long-Term Open Label Extension (LTOLE) study and the XARELTO® in Combination with Acetylsalicylic Acid (XATOA) registry have been published in the European Society of Cardiology’s (ESC) European Heart Journal, Cardiovascular Pharmacotherapy. Additionally, the XATOA registry was presented at the American Congress of Cardiology’s 71st Annual Scientific Session (ACC.22). These studies provide further evidence supporting the role of dual pathway inhibition (DPI) with the XARELTO® vascular dose (2.5 mg twice daily plus aspirin 100 mg...
