Former CDC chief Frieden to head $225m anti-heart disease initiative
Previous US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention director Dr. Tom Frieden said he will head Resolve, a new public health initiative focused on fighting heart disease and stroke which has already raised $225 million in backing from a handful of private philanthropies. The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Bloomberg Philanthropies and the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative have joined in to fund the initiative. Resolve plans to invest in efforts to reduce trans-fats from restaurant menus, which follows up on Frieden’s 2006 efforts to ban trans-fats as the New York City health commissioner. The initiative will also look to...

Neurosyphilis in Africa: A systematic review
DiscussionThis is the first systematic review of the literature on neurosyphilis in Africa since the beginning of the HIV epidemic. Neurosyphilis continues to be reported as a manifestation of both early and late syphilis, but the methodological quality of the majority of the included studies was poor. Future well-designed prospective studies are needed to better delineate the incidence and clinical spectrum of neurosyphilis in Africa and to better define interactions with HIV in this setting.

Associations between Greenness, Impervious Surface Area, and Nighttime Lights on Biomarkers of Vascular Aging in Chennai, India
Conclusion: Greenness, ISA, and NTL were associated with increased SBP, DBP, and cPP, and with reduced FMD, suggesting a possible additional EVA pathway for the relationship between urbanization and increased CVD prevalence in urban India. https://doi.org/10.1289/EHP541 Received: 20 May 2016 Revised: 03 January 2017 Accepted: 23 January 2017 Published: 02 August 2017 Address correspondence to K.J. Adolescent weight gain confers long-term increased stroke risk: Weighty matters
Adult obesity has been consistently associated with risk of total, ischemic, and hemorrhagic stroke1–3; however, the degree to which change in weight and body mass index (BMI) during late childhood and adolescence affects adult risk of stroke has remained uncertain. Understanding this relationship is of particular importance given the rising obesity epidemic during childhood and adolescence.

Pediatric Strokes: The Who, What, When, and Beyond...A Patient and Family Guide
Abstract The prevalence of pediatric strokes, incidence of delay in treatment, and misdiagnosis has become an epidemic in healthcare. The purpose of this poster presentation is to provide education to healthcare professionals related to the extensive care required for pediatric stroke patients, from diagnosis until adulthood. As healthcare professionals, we must be educated and aware that pediatric strokes (one of the top 10 causes of death in children aged 1–19 years) occur and their recovery includes a multidisciplinary approach. We have developed an educational booklet for patients and parents that includes diagnose...

Overweight teen boys have increased risk of stroke in later life
Conclusion The findings of this large longitudinal cohort study seem to demonstrate a link between being overweight aged 20 and an increased risk of stroke. This risk was regardless of whether the boy had been overweight aged 8 or not. There seemed to be no increased risk for boys who were overweight aged 8 but were a normal weight by the age of 20. The study was conducted before the obesity epidemic, and might be even more relevant today. But there are a number of considerations to take into account before we draw any conclusions: Participants were followed up until they were 52-68, so all the strokes occurred at a r...

Overfed and Underfed: Global Food Extremes
The international community of nations has made commitments to eliminate hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition by 2030 and also to promote and protect health through nutritious diet, healthy eating and increased physical activity. Credit: IPSBy Joseph ChamieNEW YORK, Jun 12 2017 (IPS)Global food extremes of chronic undernourishment and obesity have brought about a bipolar world of hundreds of millions of underfed and overfed people. Of the world’s population of 7.5 billion the proportions suffering from chronic undernourishment and those afflicted by obesity are similar, approximately 11 percent or togethe...

Chris Cornell: When Suicide Doesn't Make Sense
By Julie A. Fast Sometimes, people commit suicide and it does make some sense. It’s scary and upsets our world, but on a basic level we think we understand. The suicide of Robin Williams comes to mind. He had a history of depression and his health was failing. Oh how we all wish he could have found more help, but I don’t think it was as much surprising as it was devastating and sad for the millions who loved him when he died. Then there are suicides that make no sense. They don’t fit in the current life of the person or fit what the person is actually saying about life in public. The partner or other love...

Melanocortin neurons: multiple routes to regulation of metabolism.
Abstract The burden of disability, premature death, escalating health care costs and lost economic productivity due to obesity and its associated complications including hypertension, stroke, cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes is staggering [1, 2]. A better understanding of metabolic homeostatic pathways will provide us with insights into the biological mechanisms of obesity and how to fundamentally address this epidemic [3-6]. In mammals, energy balance is maintained via a homeostatic system involving both peripheral and central melanocortin systems; changes in body weight reflect an unbalance of the ener...
