Influence of hemodynamics on enlarged perivascular spaces in atherosclerotic large vessel disease.
CONCLUSIONS: The number of EPVS was increased in patients with atherosclerotic large vessel disease with hemodynamic compromise and decreased in the presence of a large stroke. EPVS might act as fluid absorbers in a hemodynamically compromised state until the occurrence of an ischemic stroke. PMID: 30156508 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Percutaneous mastoid electrical stimulator alleviates autonomic dysfunction in patients with acute ischemic stroke.
CONCLUSIONS: PMES was a safe, effective, and low-cost therapy to alleviate HRV and could significantly reduce mortality in the early recovery phase after acute ischemic stroke. PMID: 30111262 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Argatroban plus aspirin versus aspirin in acute ischemic stroke.
CONCLUSION: Argatroban is effective and safe for the treatment of moderate AIS with similar efficacy to high-dose aspirin in the acute phase of AIS, although no additional benefit on short-term outcome was observed. For patients with mild AIS, argatroban may be inferior to high-dose aspirin. PMID: 30052164 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Association of circulating blood HMGB1 levels with ischemic stroke: a systematic review and meta-analysis.
CONCLUSIONS: This meta-analysis demonstrates that circulating blood HMGB1 levels elevate in IS and higher HMGB1 levels may indicate a more serious condition. PMID: 30015578 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

MiR-125b blocks Bax/Cytochrome C/Caspase-3 apoptotic signaling pathway in rat models of cerebral ischemia-reperfusion injury by targeting p53.
CONCLUSION: MiR-125b exerts protective effects on CIR injury through inhibition of Bax/Cytochrome C/Caspase-3signaling pathway via targeting p53, which is likely to be a promising treatment for CIR. ABBREVIATIONS: 3'-UTR: 3-untranslated region; CIR: cerebral ischemia-reperfusion; CIS: cerebral ischemic stroke; PFT-α: Pifithrin-α; PVDF: polyvinylidene fluoride; SD: Sprague-Dawley; TBST: tris buffered saline with tween. TTC staining: Triphenyl tetrazolinm chloride staining; TUNEL: Terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase-mediated dUTP-biotin nick end labeling. PMID: 29956588 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Association of higher waist circumference with milder stroke severity in acute ischaemic stroke.
DISCUSSION: Higher WC at admission is associated with milder baseline stroke severity among patients with acute ischaemic stroke. ABBREVIATIONS: BMI: body mass index; CE: cardioembolism; CI: confidence interval; LAA: large-artery atherosclerosis; NIHSS: National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale; OR: odds ratio; SAO: small-artery occlusion; WC: waist circumference. Cerebral ischaemia/reperfusion injury could be managed by using tramadol.
DISCUSSION: Tramadol can ameliorate the histopathological structure of ischaemic tissue in both periods of I/R injury in rat. We suggest further research investigating various dosages with different administration methods of tramadol in stroke should be conducted by adopting different explorative techniques. Genistein attenuates brain damage induced by transient cerebral ischemia through up-regulation of Nrf2 expression in ovariectomized rats.
In this study, ovariectomized rats were treated with genistein (10 mg/kg) or vehicle daily for two weeks before they received middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) and reperfusion. After 72 hours of reperfusion, the neurological function was evaluated by Garcia test, infarct volume was detected by 2,3,5-triphenyltetrazolium chloride staining, and neuronal damage was detected by Nissl staining. In addition, ROS production and the expression of Nrf2, NQO1 and cleaved-Caspase3 in the ischemic penumbra were detected. RESULTS: The results showed that genistein treatment significantly improved the neurological outcome, red...

Association study of CACNA1C polymorphisms with large artery atherosclerotic stroke in Chinese Han population.
Conclusion The results suggested that there was a potential association between CNCNA1C gene and the risk factor of LAA stroke in Chinese Han population. PMID: 29683785 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Mild focal hypothermia regulates the dynamic polarization of microglia after ischemic stroke in mice.
Conclusions Hypothermia is protective following ischemic stroke and can reduce brain tissue loss. Moreover, hypothermia shifts the polarization of microglia from the M1 to the M2 phenotype in the ischemic mice brain. This observed biological phenomenon may partially explain the protective effects seen due to hypothermia in acute ischemic stroke. PMID: 29619889 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Prognosis of dolichoectasia in non-cardioembolic transient ischemic attack and minor stroke.
Conclusions Dolichoectasia was significantly associated with SAO. There was no relationship between dolichoectasia and 12-month prognosis of patients with non-cardioembolic TIA or minor stroke. PMID: 29600887 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

A mini review: garlic extract and vascular diseases.
Authors: Zhu Y, Anand R, Geng X, Ding Y Abstract Vascular diseases refer to medical conditions that narrow blood vessels. Narrowed cardiac or cerebral arteries can lead to myocardial infarction or ischemic stroke. Risk factors including atherosclerosis, hypertension, and diabetes may induce either cardiovascular or cerebral complications. Based on current research, garlic favorably affects atherosclerosis, hypertension and diabetes, and helps decrease the risk of myocardial infarction and ischemic stroke. Garlic has been utilized for hundreds of years as a natural health remedy. New research is emerging regarding i...

Effects of cerebral small vessel disease on the outcome of patients with ischemic stroke caused by large artery atherosclerosis.
DISCUSSION: CSVD can significantly influence the clinical outcome of stroke in patients with cerebral infarction caused by LAA, and the methods to capture whole brain CSVD burden cross the spectrum of changes in CSVD imaging features may be useful for patient stratification in clinical trials. Further studies should be performed to validate the relationship between CSVD related brain damage and LAA stroke. PMID: 29543130 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Genetic polymorphisms of vitamin D3 metabolizing CYP24A1 and CYP2R1 enzymes in Turkish patients with ischemic stroke.
Conclusion This is the first study conducted regarding the association of CYP24A1 rs927650 and CYP2R1 rs10741657 genetic polymorphisms and ischemic stroke risk. The polymorphic genotypes of these polymorphisms, together with hypertension, diabetes, smoking, and obesity, were found as significant risk factors for ischemic stroke.
