Leukocyte Count Predicts Carotid Artery Stenosis in Men with Ischemic Stroke: Sub Study of the Preventive Antibiotics in Stroke Study (PASS)
Conclusions: We conclude that blood leukocyte count independently predicts ICAS in men after acute stroke, but not in women. Clinical Trial unique identifier: ISRCTN66140176.PMID:36555901 | PMC:PMC9784109 | DOI:10.3390/jcm11247286

Chronic Unexpected Mild Stress Destroys Synaptic Plasticity of Neurons through a Glutamate Transporter, GLT-1, of Astrocytes in the Ischemic Stroke Rat.
Conclusion: Our study shows that CUMS destroys synaptic plasticity of regenerated neurons in the hippocampus through a glutamate transporter, GLT-1, of astrocytes in the ischemic stroke rats. This may indicate one potential pathogenesis of poststroke depression. PMID: 31019528 [PubMed - in process]

Pre-Stroke Use of Beta-Blockers Does Not Lower Post-Stroke Infection Rate: An Exploratory Analysis of the Preventive Antibiotics in Stroke Study
This study is aimed at investigating the association between BB treatment at baseline and post-stroke infection in the Preventive Antibiotics in Stroke Study (PASS), a prospective clinical trial. Methods: We performed an exploratory analysis in PASS, 2,538 patients with acute phase of stroke (24 h after onset) were randomized to ceftriaxone (intravenous, 2 g per day for 4 days) in addition to stroke unit care, or standard stroke unit care without preventive antibiotic treatment. All clinical data, including use of BBs, was prospectively collected. Infection was diagnosed by the treating physician, and independently by an ex...

Preventive Ceftriaxone in Patients with Stroke Treated with Intravenous Thrombolysis: Post Hoc Analysis of the Preventive Antibiotics in Stroke Study
Conclusions: According to the post-hoc analysis of PASS, preventive ceftriaxone may improve the functional outcome in IVT-treated patients with acute stroke, despite a trend towards an increased rate of post-IVT-sICH.Cerebrovasc Dis 2016;42:361-369

Correspondence Parenteral antibiotics are not enough to prevent pneumonia in stroke
The Preventive Antibiotics in Stroke Study (PASS; April 18, p 1519)1 reported that parenteral ceftriaxone did not significantly reduce pneumonia. We would like to comment on these results.

Azithromycin is not associated with QT prolongation in hospitalized patients with community‐acquired pneumonia
ConclusionsAzithromycin treatment was not associated with QT prolongation in patients with severe CAP. Nonetheless, in a large majority of hospitalized CAP patients, QT prolongation and pathological QTc develop regardless of the antibiotic used, especially in patients with previous stroke or a higher pneumonia score. Otitis Media Leads to Brain Abscess Presenting as Stroke
By Mikhail Elfond, DO; Esi Quayson, MD; & Joseph V.M. Kelly, MD, MBA   A 65-year-old man presented to the ED via EMS with symptoms of stroke. The paramedics stated his right-sided weakness and speech difficulty started 40 minutes prior to presentation in the ED. En route to the hospital, paramedics observed four episodes of facial twitching.     Vitals signs were significant for a rectal temperature of 100.2°F and a fingerstick blood sugar of 220 mg/dL. History of present illness was significant for a diagnosis of left otitis media treated with Augmentin and Vicodin at an urgent care center one day prior to prese...

Articles The Preventive Antibiotics in Stroke Study (PASS): a pragmatic randomised open-label masked endpoint clinical trial
Preventive ceftriaxone does not improve functional outcome at 3 months in adults with acute stroke. The results of our trial do not support the use of preventive antibiotics in adults with acute stroke.

Safety and efficacy of ceftriaxone for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis: a multi-stage, randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial
This study is registered with ClinicalTrials.gov, number NCT00349622. Findings Stage 3 included 66 participants from stages 1 and 2 and 448 new participants. In total, 340 participants were randomly allocated to ceftriaxone and 173 to placebo. During stages 1 and 2, mean ALSFRS-R declined more slowly in participants who received 4 g ceftriaxone than in those on placebo (difference 0·51 units per month, 95% CI 0·02 to 1·00; p=0·0416), but in stage 3 functional decline between the treatment groups did not differ (0·09, −0·06 to 0·24; p=0·2370). No significant differences in survival between the groups were recorde...

Update of the Preventive Antibiotics in Stroke Study (PASS): statistical analysis plan
Conclusions: The data from PASS will establish whether preventive antibiotic therapy in acute stroke improves functional outcome by preventing infection and will be analyzed according to this pre-specified SAP.Trial registration: Current controlled trials; ISRCTN66140176. Date of registration: 6 April 2010.

Update on the Preventive Antibiotics in Stroke Study (PASS): a randomised controlled phase 3 clinical trial
Conclusion: The data from PASS will establish whether preventive antibiotic therapy in acute stroke improves functional outcome by preventing infection. In this update, we changed our primary outcome analysis from dichotomisation to ordinal regression analysis.Trial registration: Current controlled trials; ISRCTN66140176. Date of registration: 6 April 2010.

Autoimmune gabab antibody encephalitis associated with non-malignant lung lesion
GABAb receptor autoimmune encephalitis is a potentially treatable disorder characterised by seizures, memory deficits, increased anxiety and mood dysregulation. In some patients it is associated with small–cell lung cancer and with other autoantibodies. We are presenting a case of GABAb receptor autoimmune encephalitis which was associated with non–malignant lung lesion, likely inflammatory in nature. A 62 year old woman presented with recent onset depression and tonic–clonic seizures. CT head showed patchy white matter changes particularly in the left frontal lobe. Initial treatment for suspected infecti...
