The association between renal impairment and polypharmacy among older Palestinian patients: a multi-center cross-sectional study
CONCLUSION: This study demonstrates a relationship between polypharmacy and renal impairment. Some people with renal impairment receive drugs that those with kidney illness should avoid or use with caution. It is important to prescribe only necessary medication, choose non-nephrotoxic alternatives, and frequently monitor renal function.PMID:36797685 | PMC:PMC9936647 | DOI:10.1186/s12875-023-02005-9

From Rags to Riches: Power and progress in Abu Dhabi
The Ethiad TowersBy Jan LundiusSTOCKHOLM, Apr 20 2022 (IPS) I recently visited Abu Dhabi and my impressions became intermingled with worries about the war in Ukraine. I also happened to read Livy’s The Early History of Rome, written around the beginning of CE, coming across these lines: The study of history is the best medicine for a sick mind; for in history you have a record of the infinite variety of human experience plainly set out for all to see; and in that record you can find for yourself and your country both examples and warnings; fine things to take as models, base things, rotten through and through, to avoid....

Impact of thyroid disease in patients with atrial fibrillation: Analysis from the JoFib registry
CONCLUSION: Despite having similar stroke and bleeding risks, patients with thyroid disease demonstrated meaningful differences in their baseline characteristics. Prospective studies are required to assess the influence of thyroid hormone fluctuations on the progression of AF.PMID:35145683 | PMC:PMC8818533 | DOI:10.1016/j.amsu.2022.103325

Results of global fats and carbs study not very relevant for UK
Conclusion The results of the study have been presented in the media as if they overturn all current dietary guidelines. In the UK at least, that is completely misleading. The study results support the UK guidelines, having found that people who get around 50% of their calories from carbohydrates and 35% from fat, as recommended by Public Health England, were likely to live the longest. There are some limitations to the study, not least that observational studies cannot prove cause and effect. For example, the very low fat and high carbohydrate levels of diets found among some participants in the study might simply repres...

Prevalence of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus Complications among Palestinians with T2DM
Conclusions The present cross-sectional study shows poor glycemic control in Palestine, while blood pressure and lipids are less poorly controlled. The study emphasizes the need to optimize the glucose-lowering treatment and to implement diabetes care program that could face the challenge of high uncontrolled diabetes as well as complications of diabetes.

Factors enhancing activities of daily living after stroke in specialized rehabilitation. An observational multicenter study within the Sunnaas International Network.
CONCLUSIONS: The study indicates that the organisation of services in specialized rehabilitation after stroke has a major impact on improvement of ADL outcomes. Main positive predictive factors were models of teamwork, with the multidisciplinary model as most beneficial, and concentrated hours of therapy. Negative predictors were the level of baseline severity and disability post stroke. CLINICAL REHABILITATION IMPACT: The results indicate that organization of services should be at target to optimize patients' outcomes in rehabilitation. Furthermore, that concentrated hour's related to specific goals in therapy are pr...

Was Arafat poisoned by radioactive polonium?
Yasser Arafat The Maybe-Murder of Yasser Arafat: In a must-read post on Wired Science Blogs, Deborah Blum points out that despite the recent confirmation of traces of radioactive polonium-210 in the exhumed remains of Palestinian Liberation Organization chairman Yasser Arafat, it is far from certain that he died of radiation poisoning. In October 2004, a month before he died, Arafat developed vomiting and abdominal pain. The symptoms were so severe that he was transferred from his home on the West Bank to a hospital in France. The direct cause of Arafat’s death — which occurred on November 11 — was a hemorrha...

Leukocyte telomere length and coronary artery calcification in Palestinians
We examined the association of LTL with coronary artery calcification (CAC), which reflects the cumulative burden of coronary atherosclerosis, in an urban Arab sample of Palestinians, a population at high risk of CHD.Methods: Using a cross-sectional design, a random sample of East Jerusalem residents, comprising 250 men aged 45–77 and women aged 55–76 and free of CHD or past stroke, was drawn from the Israel national population register. LTL was measured by Southern blots. CAC was determined by 16-slice multidetector helical CT scanning using Agatston scoring. We applied multivariable logistic modeling to examine the a...
