Hong Kong Chinese character psycholinguistic norms: ratings of 4376 single Chinese characters on semantic radical transparency, age-of-acquisition, familiarity, imageability, and concreteness
This study presents subjective ratings of age-of-acquisition (AoA), familiarity, imageability, concreteness, and semantic radical transparency in 4376 Chinese characters. The single Chinese characters were rated individually on the five dimensions by 20 native Cantonese speakers in Hong Kong to form the Hong Kong Chinese Character Psycholinguistic Norms (HKCCPN). The split-half reliability and intra-class correlations testified to the high internal reliability of the ratings. Their convergent and discriminant patterns in relations to other psycholinguistic measures echoed previous findings reported on Chinese. There were h...

Indirect effects of social support and hope on quality of life via emotional distress among stroke survivors: A three-wave structural equation model
ConclusionThe findings support a mediating role for hope in the relationship between social support and QoL in stroke survivors. The protective effect of hope on perceived stress was stronger among patients with greater functional impairment.

Protocol for Home-Based Solution for Remote Atrial Fibrillation Screening to Prevent Recurrence Stroke (HUA-TUO AF Trial): a randomised controlled trial
The objective of the study was to explore the use of long-term home-based ECG monitoring for AF detection and stroke prevention in patients with a history of stroke. Methods and analysis This prospective, randomised, open-label trial with blinded endpoint adjudication aimed to evaluate the efficacy of long-term home-based ECG monitoring for AF detection and stroke prevention in a 24-month period. Patients aged >18 years with a history of ischaemic stroke will be stratified according to the time from the index ischaemic stroke: <1, 1–3 and >3 years and then randomised in 1:1 to (1) home-based AF screening an...

Effects of a social participation-focused virtual reality intervention for community-dwelling stroke survivors with physical disabilities: a randomised controlled trial protocol
Introduction Studies show that stroke survivors encounter physical and psychological limitations that restrict their participation in social and community activities. Systematic reviews have yielded inconclusive evidence regarding the effectiveness of different interventions intended to support stroke survivors’ social participation. Recent advances in virtual reality technology may offer promising solutions, although the optimal approach to enhance social participation among stroke survivors is yet to be determined. This trial aims to develop and evaluate the effectiveness of a social participation-focused virtual r...

Pooled incidence and case-fatality of acute stroke in Mainland China, Hong Kong, and Macao: A systematic review and meta-analysis
by Fan He, Irene Blackberry, Liqing Yao, Haiyan Xie, Tshepo Rasekaba, George Mnatzaganian BackgroundStroke incidence and case-fatality in Mainland China, Hong Kong, and Macao vary by geographic region and rates often differ across and within regions. This systematic review and meta-analysis (SR) estimated the pooled incidence and short-term case-fatality of acute first ever stroke in mainland China, Hong Kong, and Macao. MethodsLongitudinal studies published in English or Chinese after 1990 were searched in PubMed/Medline, EMBASE, CINAHL, Web of Science, SinoMed and CQVIP. The incidence was expressed as Poisson means estim...

Effects of a nurse-led peer support intervention for stroke survivors: protocol for a randomised controlled trial
This study aims to develop a nurse-led peer support intervention for stroke survivors based on the Person–Environment–Occupation–Performance Model and evaluate its effects on the psychosocial outcomes of stroke survivors. Methods and analysis This is an assessor-blinded two-arm randomised controlled trial. A convenience sample of 120 stroke survivors will be recruited from two community centres and one rehabilitation unit in Yangzhou, a medium-sized city in eastern China, with 60 participants each in the intervention and control groups. The participants allocated to the intervention group will receive th...

Artificial Intelligence Limb Rehabilitation System on Account of Virtual Reality Technology on Long-Term Health Management of Stroke Patients in the Context of the Internet
This study was aimed at discussing artificial intelligence (AI) limb rehabilitation system on account of virtual reality (VR) on long-term health management of stroke patients. In the study, AI limb rehabilitation system on account of VR technology was compared with traditional drug therapy, and effects of the two therapies on long-term health management of stroke patients were compared. Fifty patients with stroke in the hospital were randomly divided into experimental group and control group with 25 patients in each group. Patients in experimental group were treated with AI limb rehabilitation system on account of VR tech...

Diagnostic accuracy of major stroke types in Chinese adults: A clinical adjudication study involving 40,000 stroke cases
Lancet Reg Health West Pac. 2022 Mar 5;21:100415. doi: 10.1016/j.lanwpc.2022.100415. eCollection 2022 Apr.ABSTRACTBACKGROUND: Widespread use of brain imaging in suspected stroke cases in Chinese adults has prompted the need for clinical adjudication studies of stroke types. We conducted a clinical adjudication study to assess the reporting and diagnostic accuracy of major stroke types.METHODS: The prospective China Kadoorie Biobank recruited >512,000 adults (mean age 52 years, 59% women) from 10 urban and rural areas in China during 2004-2008, and recorded 45,859 first-ever incident stroke cases during an 11-year follow...

Sensors, Vol. 22, Pages 2143: Investigation of Underwater Shoulder Muscle Activity during Manikin-Carrying in Young Elite Lifesaving Athletes
ng So Manikin carrying is a lifesaving sports technique, in which athletes stroke with one arm and carry a manikin of 60 kg with the other arm as they swim. Stabilizing the manikin exerts great demand on the shoulder muscles of the carrying arm; thus, this study aimed to investigate the muscle activation of the carrying shoulder and the possible factors associated with it. This was a cross-sectional study, in which 20 young elite lifesaving athletes were recruited from the Hong Kong Lifesaving Society. The muscle activity of the posterior deltoid (PD), teres major (TM), and middle trapezius (MT) were recorded with wire...
