Emergency thrombectomy for acute ischaemic stroke: current evidence, international guidelines, and local clinical practice.
Abstract Acute ischaemic stroke due to large vessel occlusion leads to grave neurological morbidity and mortality. Conventional intravenous thrombolysis is ineffective in achieving timely reperfusion in this group of patients. The publication of five positive randomised controlled trials of emergency thrombectomy for acute ischaemic stroke in 2015 provided strong evidence to support endovascular reperfusion therapy and represented a paradigm shift in acute stroke management. In this article, we review the current evidence and international guidelines, and report on the findings of a survey study of the clinical pr...

Learning to write: The role of handwriting for Chinese spelling in kindergarten children.
Given the orthographic complexities of Chinese characters, handwriting skills may play an important role in how children learn to write Chinese. The present study includes a comprehensive battery of handwriting measures in relation to Chinese spelling in young children. Measures of handwriting, including stroke order, visual-motor integration (Hebrew and Vietnamese copying) and handwriting fluency, along with other reading-related cognitive skills, were administered to 141 kindergartners in Hong Kong schools. We assessed the extent to which these handwriting measures are associated with spelling. A series of regression ana...

Long-term Fine Particulate Matter Exposure and Nonaccidental and Cause-specific Mortality in a Large National Cohort of Chinese Men
Conclusions: Long-term exposure to PM2.5 was associated with nonaccidental, CVD, lung cancer, and COPD mortality in China. The IER estimator may underestimate the excess relative risk of cause-specific mortality due to long-term exposure to PM2.5 over the exposure range experienced in China and other low- and middle-income countries. https://doi.org/10.1289/EHP1673 Received: 24 February 2017 Revised: 01 September 2017 Accepted: 05 September 2017 Published: 07 November 2017 Address correspondence to M. Cost-Effectiveness of Edoxaban In Patients With Non-Valvular Atrial Fibrillation In Hong Kong
Atrial fibrillation (AF) is a common arrhythmia associated with debilitating consequences such as stroke, heart failure and venous thromboembolism. In HK, 20-25% of stroke cases are related to AF leading to a significant burden. Warfarin has been the frontline oral anticoagulant for AF but with high bleeding risk and hence monitoring and dose adjustment are required. The non-vitamin-K antagonist oral anticoagulants (NOACs) are alternatives to warfarin for preventing stroke and systemic embolism in non-valvular AF (NVAF) patients.

Glycaemia control and the risk of hospitalisation for infection in patients with type 2 diabetes: Hong Kong Diabetes Registry
ConclusionsIn patients with type 2 diabetes, burden of serious infection is high. In the diabetic population, a U‐shape relationship between glycaemia and infection‐related hospitalisation was detected.

Transcatheter aortic valve implantation: initial experience in Hong Kong.
CONCLUSIONS: Transcatheter aortic valve implantation has been developed as an alternative treatment for patients with symptomatic severe aortic stenosis who are deemed inoperable or high risk for surgery. Our results are very promising and comparable with those of major clinical trials. PMID: 28655865 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Screening for atrial fibrillation in 13 122 Hong Kong citizens with smartphone electrocardiogram
Conclusion Community screening for AF with SL-ECG was feasible and it identified a significant proportion of citizens with newly diagnosed AF. The prevalence of AF in a Chinese population in Hong Kong was comparable with that of contemporary Western counterparts. Apart from age and sex, different anthropometric parameters and cardiovascular comorbid conditions were identified as independent predictors of AF.

Anticoagulation for stroke prevention in elderly patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation: what are the obstacles?
Authors: Wong CW Abstract The elderly with atrial fibrillation are more prone to stroke. Oral anticoagulants such as warfarin are effective in the prevention of atrial fibrillation-associated stroke and systemic embolism. The CHADS2 or CHA2D2-VASc score and HAS-BLED score were developed to stratify stroke risk associated with atrial fibrillation and bleeding risk in a patient with atrial fibrillation, respectively, to facilitate the decision for and safe use of oral anticoagulant. Nonetheless, the decision for anticoagulation is not straightforward and the elderly with non-valvular atrial fibrillation are often pre...
