The impact of COVID-19 pandemic in stroke code activation and time from symptom onset to hospital arrival in a Portuguese comprehensive stroke centre
CONCLUSION: COVID-19 related factors probably reduced healthcare services utilization, and delayed emergency calls and hospital arrival after stroke onset. These highlight the importance of health education to improve the effectiveness of medical assistance. The preservation of in-hospital times validates the feasibility of the protected stroke code protocol.PMID:34291445 | DOI:10.33588/rn.7303.2020445

Clinical Research, Basic ScienceEpidemiological Analysis of 37,424 Carotid Artery Stenosis Intervention procedures during 11 years in the Public Health System in Brazil: Stenting Has Been More Common than Endarterectomy
Stroke (cerebrovascular accident) figures among CVDs as the second leading cause of death worldwide, responding for approximately 5.7 million cases per year, which represent 10% of global mortality (1), as well as the third leading cause of disability globally (2). In Brazil, stroke is currently the second leading cause of death and impairing symptoms (3). In 10 to 20% of cases, strokes are secondary to carotid atherosclerosis (4), hence the relevance of analysing carotid bifurcation operative procedures as a sensible preventative measure for cerebral ischemic diseases.

Revascularization Strategies in Patients with Acute Myocardial Infarction and Cardiogenic Shock: Results from the Portuguese Registry on Acute Coronary Syndromes
Conclusions: Among patients with MI, CS, and MVD included in the ProACS, there was no significant difference between complete and incomplete revascularization during the index hospitalization regarding the occurrence of in-hospital death or MI. (Arq Bras Cardiol. 2021; 116(5):867-876)

Increased short-term risk of cardiovascular events in inflammatory rheumatic diseases: results from a population-based cohort
AbstractCardiovascular diseases represent the first cause of death globally. Inflammatory rheumatic disease (IRMD) patients, due to their lifelong inflammatory status, are at increased risk of developing premature cardiovascular disease. We aimed to assess the risk for cardiovascular events (CVE) in a population-based study. We followed 10,153 adults from the EpiDoC Cohort, a large Portuguese population-based prospective study (2011 –2016). IRMD patients were identified at baseline and followed during 5 years. CVE were defined as a composite of self-reported myocardial infarction or angina pectoris, arrhythmias, valvula...

Translation and Validation of the TOR-BSST © into Brazilian Portuguese for Adults with Stroke
AbstractBrazil has a higher rate of dysphagia in stroke patients compared to developed countries, but does not have a fully validated method for early identification of dysphagia in this population. The aim of this study is to translate the TOR-BSST© into Brazilian Portuguese and assess the newly translated version for reliability and validity with Brazilian adult patients with stroke. The translation of the TOR-BSST© followed a multi-step process, according to the International Quality of Life Assessment project. For validation, we included patients with age  ≥ 18 years and stroke diagnosis confirmed by neuroimag...

Readmissions and Mortality During the First Year After Stroke —Data From a Population-Based Incidence Study
Conclusions: Almost one-third of FELS survivors were readmitted/dead 1 year after their FELS-IH. This outcome persisted after the first months after stroke hospitalization in all stroke subtypes. More than half of readmissions were considered potentially avoidable or stroke related.

Effect of spectral overlays on visual parameters and reading ability: an integrative review
Conclusion: the effectiveness of overlays in improving reading quality is consistently demonstrated in the literature. The reviewed articles showed that the overlays ’ effect is more expressive when the visual stress is associated with conditions that present sensory alterations and cortical hyperactivity.RESUMO Objetivo: oferecer uma revis ão integrativa dos artigos indexados publicados de 2009 a 2019 sobre o efeito das lâminas espectrais (overlays) em parâmetros visuais e na habilidade de leitura. Métodos: utilizou-se a pesquisa de palavras-chave em sete bancos de dados. Foram excluídos registros duplicados, revis...

The Role of Cardiovascular Risk Assessment in Preventive Medicine: A Perspective from Portugal Primary Health-Care Cardiovascular Risk Assessment.
Authors: Santos P Abstract The cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of death in the world, especially because of myocardial infarction and stroke. Their beginning, however, starts many years earlier with the atherosclerotic process due to the cardiovascular risk factors, with different weights in the global risk. Our aim is to review the utilization of risk estimators in primary health care, through a comprehensive review of the literature and official national and international health data (OECD and WHO). The risk estimators aim to integrate the partial information of each factor in a global calculation a...

Organic Psychosis Causing Secondary Schizophrenia in One-Fourth of a Cohort of 200 Patients Previously Diagnosed With Primary Schizophrenia.
Conclusions: The most striking feature of this study was the high prevalence of incorrect diagnosis of schizophrenia, with patients not receiving the minimum correct assessment before that diagnosis, resulting in negative consequences. Caution is recommended when diagnosing severely psychotic patients independent of their acute or chronic condition. PMID: 32220147 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]
