Ischemic Stroke Outcomes in Oman: Experience of a University Hospital Based Stroke Registry (P6.278)
Conclusions:Ischemic stroke in Oman reflects the high morbidity/mortality seen in most communities in the region. Characteristics of incident stroke such as stroke recurrence, type, severity and cardiovascular comorbidity are likely the major determinants of stroke outcome. A relatively lower prevalence of extracranial artery disease and possible greater prevalence of multiple stroke mechanisms may also influence on outcomes and merit further study.Disclosure: Dr. Gujjar has nothing to disclose. Clinical Profile of Stroke Patients Presenting to the Emergency Department of a Major Stroke Centre in Oman
CONCLUSION: This study provides essential data regarding stroke characteristics specific to Oman's population. Most of the information obtained appears to be in-line with what has been described internationally and, hence, preventive strategies similar to those indicated in extant literature can be implemented. This information can be utilised by health administrators in planning resource allocation. Further research is needed to explore rehabilitation aspects and long-term outcomes.PMID:35299813 | PMC:PMC8904127 | DOI:10.18295/squmj.4.2021.062

A Successful Endovascular Treatment of an Ischemic Stroke following Cardiac Surgery.
We present the case of a 52-year-old woman who had open heart surgery in Queen Alia Heart Institute, Jordan, to replace a severely stenotic rheumatic mitral valve and repair a leaking tricuspid valve. Her surgery went smoothly with no major event. However, she developed a massive ischemic stroke during her recovery period despite being on adequate anticoagulation therapy. Urgent radiological work-up confirmed the diagnosis of ischemic stroke in the territory of the right middle cerebral artery. We chose a neuro-interventional method for her treatment, and mechanical thrombectomy was performed with a successful outcome and ...

Extradural Hemorrhage: A rare Complication and Manifestation of Stroke in Sickle Cell Disease.
We present a case of extradural hemorrhage, a rare and unusual complication associated with Sickle Cell Disease, from Nizwa, Oman. A 12-year old male child with Sickle cell disease (SD) was admitted to hospital with backache and pain in both lower Limbs. Clinical examination revealed an average built child with mild pallor, mild tenderness in the lower back and both legs. Rest of the examination was unremarkable including the Central Nervous System. The next day, the patient developed generalized convulsion and became unconscious with shallow breathing. CT of the brain revealed large extradural hemorrhage with shift of mid...

Distribution of sickle cell disease and assessment of risk factors based on transcranial Doppler values in the Gulf region.
Conclusions: The study results show that far fewer patients with SCD in the Gulf have abnormal TCD findings than the internationally reported. Larger studies are needed to identify the factors underlying this observation. PMID: 31983291 [PubMed - in process]

Predictors of Adverse Outcome in Sickle Cell Disease Patients from Oman
Conclusion: Multi-organ failure was mostly associated with the terminal events relating to mortality. Although sepsis played a major role as a cause of death in association with multiorgan failure, low hemoglobin, and low platelet counts with increased WBC counts along with elevated LDH and CRP played a significant role in the terminal event in this cohort of SCD patients.DisclosuresNo relevant conflicts of interest to declare.

Alarming predictions for obesity and non-communicable diseases in the Middle East.
CONCLUSIONS: Obesity is a growing problem in the Middle East which requires government action on the primary prevention of obesity. The present results are important for policy makers to know the effectiveness of obesity interventions on future disease burden. PMID: 23642403 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

2015 Oman Heart Association Guidelines for the Management of Hypertension
Abstract Hypertension (HTN) is a major independent risk factor for the development of stroke, coronary artery disease (CAD), peripheral arterial disease (PAD), heart failure (HF) and chronic kidney disease (CKD). HTN is a growing public health problem in Oman, almost certainly the most prevalent modifiable risk factor for cardiovascular disease (CVD). The risk of CVD in patients with HTN can be greatly reduced with lifestyle modifications and effective antihypertensive therapy. Randomized trials have shown that blood pressure (BP) lowering produces rapid reductions in CV risk. Several studies have shown that the m...

Acute myocardial infarction after switching from warfarin to dabigatran.
We present a case of an acute MI and cardiac arrest in a patient with chronic AF who had been recently switched from warfarin to dabigatran. Urgent coronary angiography, at St. Michael's hospital (Toronto, Canada), revealed evidence of thromboembolism to the distal posterior descending artery. The patient was treated medically and switched back from dabigatran to warfarin. He did well and was discharged after an uneventful stay in the coronary care unit. PMID: 25830002 [PubMed]

Non-traumatic Cerebral Fat Embolism in Sickle Cell Disease (P3.234)
Conclusions:Our case series illustrates the following clinical pearls: a) SCD-related CFES is vastly under-diagnosed, as it closely mimics sepsis, vasculitis or hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy; b) The diagnosis is confirmed with SWI that demonstrates pathognomonic microbleeds in the splenium and subcortical location; c) SCD-related CFES carries considerable morbidity and mortality.Disclosure: Dr. Ramachandiran has nothing to disclose. Cardiovascular Disease Incidence and Risk Factor Patterns among Omanis with Type 2 Diabetes: A Retrospective Cohort Study.
CONCLUSIONS: This study revealed high incidence of CVD and high prevalence of its traditional risk factors among Omanis with T2DM. In addition, compared to global studies, important differences in the prevalence of some risk factors and their patterns in the univariate association with the cardiovascular outcome have been observed. What Causes Microcephaly?
Discussion Microcephaly is usually defined as an occipitofrontal head circumference (OFC) more than 2 standard deviations (SD) below the mean for sex, age and ethnicity. Severe microcephaly is used for OFC < 3 standard deviations. Rates of microcephaly range from 0.5-12 patients/10,000 live births. The OFC should be measured at every well child visit and at other opportunities and plotted on standard growth charts. The OFC is measured using a nonelastic tape measure around the largest part of the head with the tape measure held above the eyebrows and ears. It is a highly reproducible measurement. There are several diff...

Exposure to water-accommodated fractions of two different crude oils alters morphology, cardiac function and swim bladder development in early-life stages of zebrafish.
Abstract The present study investigated the developmental toxicity of water-accommodated fractions (WAFs) of Oman crude oil (OCO) and Merey crude oil (MCO) on zebrafish (Danio rerio) in early-life stages (ELS). Based on total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH), LC50 values manifested that OCO WAF was 1.2-fold more lethal to zebrafish embryos than MCO WAF. As for hatching rate, EC50 value for OCO WAF was 5.7-fold lower than that for MCO WAF. To evaluate the sublethal morphological effects, semi-quantitative extended general morphological score (GMS) and general teratogenic score (GTS) systems were adopted. The GMS and GT...
