Association of underlying untreated cardiovascular risk factors with mortality and functional outcome in ischaemic stroke patients
Stroke is the third leading cause of death after ischaemic heart disease (IHD) and pneumonia in Malaysia.1 Aziz et al. reported that Malaysia's prevalence of ischaemic stroke had increased from 42.8 to 118.7 in 100,000 from 2010 to 2014. The report showed that 8-11% of ischaemic stroke patients died within 30 days while 56-61% survived with significant disability in Malaysia.2 Our previous study showed that patients with ischaemic stroke in Malaysia were younger, but the mortality rate was higher than in other countries.

IJERPH, Vol. 20, Pages 3977: Social and Health Determinants of Quality of Life of Community-Dwelling Older Adults in Malaysia
g Gan Quality of life (QOL) of older adults is a complex issue that requires an understanding of the intersection between socioeconomic and health factors. A poor quality of life (QOL) is frequently reported as sub-optimal among older adults whereby concerted and collective actions are required through an evidence-based approach. Hence, this cross-sectional study aims to determine the social and health predictors of the QOL of a community-dwelling older adult Malaysian population through a quantitative household survey using multi-stage sampling. A total of 698 respondents aged 60 years old and older were recruited and...

The Effectiveness of Stroke Riskometer ™ in Improving Stroke Risk Awareness in Malaysia: A Study Protocol of a Cluster-Randomized Controlled Trial
Conclusion: This study will evaluate the effect of Stroke Riskometer™ app on stroke awareness and stroke probability and briefly evaluate participant engagement to a pre-specified trial protocol. The findings from this will inform physicians and public health professionals of the benefit of mobile technology intervention and encourage more active mobile phone-based disease prevention apps.Trial Registration: ClinicalTrials.gov Identifier NCT04529681.Neuroepidemiology

Understanding Cognitive Impairment after Stroke: Stories from a Middle-Income Country
This study presents findings from a community of Malaysian-Chinese stroke survivors living in Malaysia on their understandings of cognitive deficits after stroke. The way stroke survivors thought about CI was also mediated by the cultural and social context that surrounded them. Of interest was the primacy of physical health over the cognitive which resulted in the invisibility of CI within this community, regardless of whether the deficits were mild or severe. Based on these findings, there is a need to rethink how cognitive decline should be observed in realistic community settings.

Understandings stroke in rural Malaysia: ethnographic insights.
Conclusion: Lack of knowledge about stroke and its symptoms was evident in participants' account. Findings emphasize the importance of knowledge based health interventions, especially in health education strategies for stroke survivors to reduce delays to diagnosis and potentially improve health outcomes post-stroke. Implications for rehabilitation Stroke survivors often form explanatory models of stroke that draw from both biomedical and traditional explanations of stroke. Understanding how people derive lay understandings of stroke can contribute towards developing the goals and activities that facilitate recovery and re...

Periodontal Disease Is Associated With Increased Risk of Hypertension: A Cross-Sectional Study
Conclusion: Periodontal disease is significantly and positively correlated with increased risk of hypertension in Chinese population, and exact mechanisms of this association should be explored in future. Introduction Periodontal disease is a complex polymicrobial inflammation, including gingivitis and periodontitis. According to the 2015 Global Burden of Disease (GBD) study, the prevalence of severe chronic periodontitis in 2015 has reached 616 million (Kassebaum et al., 2017). In China, the periodontal disease standardized DALYs rate has risen from 24.7 in 1990 to 25.7 in 2013 according to the data from 2013 GBD ...

Contextual factors that shape recovery after stroke in Malaysia.
CONCLUSION: The identification of factors that facilitate the recovery process provides a background in which health care providers can utilise to improve their understanding of the stroke experience. Such understanding could be instrumental in aiding health professionals to offer the most effective help to their clients. Implications for rehabilitation Identification of contextual factors provides a background for the understanding of the stroke experience. Incorporation of religion into rehabilitation could support and maintain hope in recovery for the survivors and aid acceptance. A collaboration of healthcare professio...

Ekso Bionics Steps Up to Develop Exoskeleton Market in Asia
China is expected to have 30 million stroke patients by 2030, and many of those patients will have some degree of disability. And yet, the stroke and spinal cord rehabilitation industry in China is not as developed as it is in the United States. A new joint venture between Ekso Bionics, Zhejiang Youchuang Venture Capital Investment (ZYVC) and Zhejiang Silicon Paradise Asset Management Group could change that. "This joint venture is a transformative opportunity both for Ekso Bionics and for the millions of Chinese stroke and spinal cord injury patients who currently have limited access to advanced rehabilitation...

Documenting the impact of stroke in a middle-income country: a Malaysian case study.
CONCLUSION: In LMIC, recovery can be shaped by the family unit and through active coping strategies especially those in relation to spirituality. Implications for rehabilitation The impact of stroke on survivors and lack of specialized stroke care compromise the recovery process and quality of life for stroke survivors in low and middle-income countries. Support from the family and reinforcement of religious coping were judged to successfully aid recovery. Physical and emotional impairments as well as psychosocial wellbeing of survivors in the context of environmental factors need to be addressed. PMID: 30183424 [PubM...

Economic burden of stroke: a systematic review on post-stroke care
ConclusionThe highest PSC costs were observed in the USA, with rehabilitation services being the main cost driver. Due to diversity in reporting, it was not possible to conduct a detailed cost analysis addressing different segments of services. Further approaches should benefit from the advantages of administrative and claims data, focusing on inpatient/outpatient PSC cost and its predictors, assuring appropriate resource allocation.

The effectiveness of culturally tailored video narratives on medication understanding and use self-efficacy among stroke patients: A randomized controlled trial study protocol
Discussion and conclusion: The study should be able to determine if video narrative can induce a positive behavioral change towards stroke risk factor control via enhanced medication understanding and use self-efficacy. This intervention is innovative as it combines health belief, motivation, and role model concept to trigger self-efficacy in maintaining healthy behaviors and better disease management. Adaptive invention: independence and mobility through modifications.
CONCLUSIONS: Stroke recovery involves adapting to new limitations and discovering the support necessary to live life. These changes are influenced by a range of environmental factors. Healthcare professionals need to support stroke patients in identifying challenges and work to find innovative ways to address them. Stroke survivors may benefit from the use of an assistive device beyond its clinical function to participate purposefully in activities of daily living. Implications for Rehabilitation Stroke is a cause of disability that limits everyday activities and reduces social participation. Assistive devices help achieve...
