America Has No Way to Take Care of Mentally Ill People
With evermore unhoused people on the streets of our biggest cities, and publicized subway crimes in New York, mental health treatment is again in the news. Politicians speak about “caring” for the mentally ill in a new way, which turns out to be the old way—putting them away. The mention of involuntary confinement, predictably, sparks anxiety and controversy, giving rise to the question of whom this policy is meant to help: the people taken away or the rest of population, those shopping, jogging, carrying groceries home, who, presumably, will no longer be bothered by the inconvenient reality of a person s...

Chaihu-Shugan-San inhibits neuroinflammation in the treatment of post-stroke depression through the JAK/STAT3-GSK3 β/PTEN/Akt pathway
Biomed Pharmacother. 2023 Feb 10;160:114385. doi: 10.1016/j.biopha.2023.114385. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPost-stroke depression (PSD) is one of the most common neuropsychiatric consequence of stroke, affecting cognitive function, recovery of somatic function, and patient survival. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether Chaihu-Shugan-San, a traditional Chinese medicine formula used clinically to treat depression, could improve symptoms in a rat model for PSD, to investigate the potential mechanisms, and to validate the findings in an in vitro oxygen and glucose deprivation (OGD) model. Male rats were subjected t...

Mediating effect of post-stroke depression between activities of daily living and health-related quality of life: meta-analytic structural equation modeling
ConclusionsThe findings suggest that both decreased ADL and PSD may reduce HRQoL, while a decrease in ADL tends to cause depression after stroke. Therefore, ADL and PSD reductions should be improved to achieve better HRQoL of stroke survivors. Future studies should continue to discuss other factors affecting HRQoL to achieve optimal recovery in stroke survivors.

The final puff: Can New Zealand quit smoking for good?
Smoking kills. Ayesha Verrall has seen it up close. As a young resident physician in New Zealand’s public hospitals in the 2000s, Verrall watched smokers come into the emergency ward every night, struggling to breathe with their damaged lungs. Later, as an infectious disease specialist, she saw how smoking exacerbated illness in individuals diagnosed with tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS. She would tell them: “The best thing you can do to promote your health, other than take the pills, is to quit smoking.” Verrall is still urging citizens to give up cigarettes—no longer just one by one, but by the thousands. As New...
