Attitudes toward Anticoagulation for Postoperative Atrial Fibrillation: A Nationwide Survey of VA Providers
ConclusionOur data indicate a wide variability in the management of POAF. This reflects conflicting recommendations in the guidelines, as well as a paucity of prospective treatment trials in this field. Nevertheless, a growing evidence base suggests that this complication carries potentially serious long term morbidity and mortality, and better evidence for its management is needed. This article is protected by copyright. Comparison in Patients < 75 Years of Age - vs – Those > 75 Years on One-Year-Events with Atrial Fibrillation and Left Atrial Appendage Occluder (From the Prospective Multicenter German LAARGE Registry)
Left atrial appendage closure (LAAC) is an alternative to oral anticoagulation therapy in patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation for the prevention of embolic stroke and systemic embolism. Although elderly patients (>75 years) have both higher ischemic and bleeding risk as compared to younger patients, they benefit from optimal anticoagulation. The sub-analysis aimed to assess the indications, the safety, efficacy, and 1-year outcomes of interventional LAAC in elderly patients ( ≥ 75 years) compared to younger (

Bleeding Complications Drive In-Hospital Mortality of Patients with Atrial Fibrillation after Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement.
CONCLUSION:  The present study demonstrates that the incidence of bleeding defines the in-hospital outcome of patients with AF after TF-TAVR. Thus, the periprocedural phase demands particular care in bleeding prevention. PMID: 32828074 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Use, Persistence, Efficacy, and Safety of Apixaban in Patients with Non-Valvular Atrial Fibrillation in Unselected Patients in Germany. Results of the Prospective Apixaban in Atrial Fibrillation (APAF) Registry
ConclusionsIn this prospective experience in unselected patients with atrial fibrillation, persistence to apixaban was high, and efficacy and safety were comparable to the results in clinical trials, supporting its use in clinical practice.

A cost-effectiveness analysis model of Preventicus atrial fibrillation screening from the point of view of statutory health insurance in Germany
With atrial fibrillation (AF) the risk of stroke is 4.2-fold increased to a comparable population without AF. This risk decreases by up to 70% if AF is detected early enough and effective stroke preventive mea...

Left atrial appendage closure in patients with chronic kidney disease: results from the German multicentre LAARGE registry
ConclusionsDespite an increased cardiovascular risk profile of CKD patients, device implantation was safe, and LAAC was associated with effective stroke prevention across all CKD stages.

Impact of left atrial diameter on outcome in patients undergoing edge ‐to‐edge mitral valve repair: results from the German TRAnscatheter Mitral valve Interventions (TRAMI) registry
ConclusionLeft atrial enlargement is a strong and independent predictor of adverse long ‐term outcome after transcatheter mitral valve repair. Further study is warranted to examine whether timely intervention may have the potential to modify outcome.

ICDs Have Come a Long Way in 40 Years
Michel Mirowski and his colleagues gave the field of implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (ICDs) a pretty good start, but what's more impressive is how far the technology has advanced since that first human ICD implant in February 1980. In the past 40 years we've seen ICDs become dramatically smaller, longer lasting, more capable, more personalized, subcutaneous (non-transvenous), and even MRI-firendly. And that's not to mention the advanced data connectivity and monitoring capabilities that the latest technologies offer. So without further ado, let's take a look at the current ICD landscape and the companie...

Impact of NAFLD on the Incidence of Cardiovascular Diseases in a Primary Care Population in Germany
ConclusionsNAFLD constitutes an independent risk factor for CHD, MI, and AF in primary care in Germany. Identification of patients with NAFLD in primary care will allow specifically managing and modifying underlying risk factors to improve the overall prognosis.

Interventional occlusion of left atrial appendage in patients with atrial fibrillation. Acute and long-term outcome of occluder implantation in the LAARGE Registry
ConclusionsLAARGE, a prospective multicenter real-world and all-comer registry, is unique in its concept, as it is non-manufacturer sponsored and includes all commercially available devices. LAAO implantation is mainly performed in elderly, critically-ill patients with a history of bleeding. LAARGE demonstrates a favorable outcome at 1-year follow-up in terms of stroke/TIA (1.3%) and major bleeding (1.6%) while using a single APT in the vast majority of patients.
