Pulmonary Embolism in Ischemic Stroke: Clinical Presentation, Risk Factors, and Outcome Stroke
Conclusions In this large cohort study, PE occurred in nearly 1% of AIS patients. PE was more common in patients with severe stroke, history of cancer, previous DVT/PE or acute DVT and associated with lower short- and long-term survival, greater disability, and longer length of stay.

The predictive role of CHA2DS2–VASc score between venous thromboembolism and ischemic stroke: a large-scale cohort study
Conclusion: Our study is the first to concern the performance of CHA2DS2–VASc score in predicting the risk of ischemic stroke in VTE patients and the risk of VTE in ischemic stroke patients. Nevertheless, the performance of the score was modest, and the transportability of the score in these populations still needs to be defined.

Abstract 8: Association Between Hospital "Get With The Guidelines-Stroke" Performance Measures And Outcomes Among Patients With Acute Ischemic Stroke In China Session Title: Concurrent I Session B: Oral Abstracts on Stroke Topics
Conclusions: A significant association between hospital care process and outcomes was found, supporting the use of GWTG-Stroke performance metrics as a means of assessing and helping improve stroke care quality in China.

Abstract 21: Stroke Physician Report Cards Improve Physician Response Times for Thrombolytic Treatment Session Title: Concurrent Session IIC: Oral Abstracts - Stroke
Conclusion: The results show that direct, personal and comparative feedback to stroke physicians influences their page-to-response, page-to-needle times and may affect DTN times. There was a clear trend overall, and the page-to-response and page-to-needle times showed significant improvement. Though our numbers were too small to detect statistical significance for individuals, the benefit of improved treatment times is likely clinically significant.

Racial-Ethnic Disparities in Acute Stroke Care in the Florida-Puerto Rico Collaboration to Reduce Stroke Disparities Study Epidemiology
We examined race‐ethnic disparities in acute stroke performance metrics in a voluntary stroke registry among Florida and Puerto Rico Get With the Guidelines‐Stroke hospitals. Methods and ResultsSeventy‐five sites in the Florida Puerto Rico Stroke Registry (66 Florida and 9 Puerto Rico) recorded 58 864 ischemic stroke cases (2010–2014). Logistic regression models examined racial‐ethnic differences in acute stroke performance measures and defect‐free care (intravenous tissue plasminogen activator treatment, in‐hospital antithrombotic therapy, deep vein thrombosis prophylaxis, discharge antithrombotic therapy, a...

Ischemic Stroke and Risk of Venous Thromboembolism in the General Population: The Tromso Study Epidemiology
ConclusionsThe risk of VTE increased during the first 3 months after an ischemic stroke. The particularly high risk of provoked VTE suggests that additional predisposing factors, such as immobilization, potentiate the VTE risk in patients with ischemic stroke.

Paradoxical Association of Smoking With In-Hospital Mortality Among Patients Admitted With Acute Ischemic Stroke Stroke
Conclusions Similar to myocardial ischemia, smoking was independently associated with lower inpatient mortality in acute ischemic stroke. This effect may be due to tobacco-induced changes in cerebrovascular vasoreactivity, or may be due in part to residual confounding. Larger, multicenter studies are needed to confirm the finding and the effect on 30-day and 1-year mortality.

Perioperative Neurological Evaluation and Management to Lower the Risk of Acute Stroke in Patients Undergoing Noncardiac, Nonneurological Surgery: A Scientific Statement From the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association
Circulation. 2021 Apr 8:CIR0000000000000968. doi: 10.1161/CIR.0000000000000968. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPerioperative stroke is a potentially devastating complication in patients undergoing noncardiac, nonneurological surgery. This scientific statement summarizes established risk factors for perioperative stroke, preoperative and intraoperative strategies to mitigate the risk of stroke, suggestions for postoperative assessments, and treatment approaches for minimizing permanent neurological dysfunction in patients who experience a perioperative stroke. The first section focuses on preoperative optimization, including...

Causes of ischemic stroke in young adults versus non-young adults: A multicenter hospital-based observational study
CONCLUSIONS: Certain embolic sources and uncommon causes may be etiologically important causes of ischemic stroke in young adults. However, the contribution of conventional vascular risk factors and lifestyle-related risk factors is not negligible with advancing age, even in young adults.PMID:35830430 | DOI:10.1371/journal.pone.0268481

Perception Versus Actual Performance in Timely Tissue Plasminogen Activation Administration in the Management of Acute Ischemic Stroke Stroke
Conclusions Hospitals often overestimate their ability to deliver timely tPA to treated patients. Our findings indicate the need to routinely provide comparative provider performance rates as a key step to improving the quality of acute stroke care.

Racial Disparities in Intravenous Recombinant Tissue Plasminogen Activator Use Persist at Primary Stroke Centers Stroke
Conclusions Racial disparities in intravenous rt-PA use were not reduced by presentation to PSCs. Black patients were less likely to receive thrombolytic treatment than white patients at both non-PSCs and PSCs. Hispanic patients were less likely to be seen at PSCs relative to white patients and were less likely to receive intravenous rt-PA in the fully adjusted model.

Rare Variants in the ADAMTS13 Von Willebrand Factor-Binding Domain Contribute to Pediatric Stroke Original Articles
Conclusions— Our data provide a link between the genetic architecture of ADAMTS13, ADAMTS13 levels, and stroke susceptibility. Altogether, these studies render ADAMTS13 an attractive candidate for functional studies and may contribute to personalized diagnosis and treatment options in future.
