E-021 Pathophysiology, stroke types, collateral formation and aneurysms in moyamoya disease/moya moya syndrome
ConclusionsMMD is presented most commonly with ischemic stroke in the pediatric age group and with hemorrhagic stroke in the adult age group. MMD-associated intracranial aneurysms frequently occur in patients presenting with hemorrhagic unilateral MMD and are associated with an extremely high rate of rupture. Long-standing hemodynamic stress might contribute to the formation of an aneurysm.Disclosures S. Ahmad: None.

Stroke in a global world: geographical differences in stroke subtypes and age at onset in two different populations from Europe and South America. (P1.094)
CONCLUSIONS: Changes in the prevalence of vascular risk factors and stroke subtypes can be expected with the ageing of populations. In order to reduce age and stroke-related burden, public health strategies should be implemented. Study Supported by:Disclosure: Dr. Casanova-Lanchipa has nothing to disclose. Pediatric stroke related to Lyme neuroborreliosis: Data from the Swiss NeuroPaediatric Stroke Registry and literature review.
CONCLUSIONS: Lyme Neuroborreliosis accounts for a small proportion of paediatric stroke even in an endemic country. The strong predilection towards posterior cerebral circulation with clinical occurrence of brainstem signs associated with meningeal symptoms and CSF lymphocytosis are suggestive features that should rapidly point to the diagnosis. This can confirmed by appropriate serological testing in the serum and CSF. Clinicians must be aware of this rare neurological complication of Lyme disease that demands specific antibiotic treatment. Rare causes of stroke-a frequent stroke etiology.
Abstract As a whole, rare stroke causes represent a frequent stroke etiology. Since rare stroke causes affect primarily young patients, early diagnosis and treatment are of high socioeconomic relevance. In our everyday clinical practice, cervical artery dissection, which is the most common stroke etiology among patients < 45 years, and vasculitis are particularly important. In the case of vasculitis, devastating disease courses and potentially harmful treatment options complicate clinical decision-making. Non-vasculitic vasculopathies, infections, hematological disorders, coagulation disorders, metabolic disord...

Juvenile Stroke.
CONCLUSION: The high rates of cryptogenic stroke and ESUS among patients with juvenile stroke indicate that uncertainties remain in the diagnosis and treatment of this entity. The identification of rare causes of juvenile stroke requires a major diagnostic effort. Which diagnostic tests are useful or necessary in which patients is a matter that is currently decided on an individual basis. This is true, above all, of the indication for long-term cardiac monitoring. PMID: 28835326 [PubMed - in process]

Ischemic stroke in patients with POEMS syndrome: a case report and comprehensive analysis of literature.
Conclusion: Comprehensive analysis of literature revealed several trends in patients with ischemic stroke and POEMS syndrome including a low survival rate and a preponderance of cerebral vasculopathy and multiple cerebral arteries affected. Ischemic stroke may be a poor outcome predictor in patients with POEMS syndrome. Further researches focusing on a larger cohort may help in better characterizing and treating this rare complication of POEMS syndrome. PMID: 29179528 [PubMed]

Infectious causes of stroke
Purpose of review Stroke continuous to be a leading cause of debility in the world. Infections have been associated with stroke, but are not considered as directly causal, and so they are not often included in the traditional stroke workup and management. They are especially important in patients with stroke of undetermined etiology, and in certain patient populations, such as young patients without traditional risk factors, and immunocompromised patients. Recent findings There has been strong evidence for infectious conditions, such as endocarditis, and pathogens, such as varicella zoster in stroke causation, and mor...

Clinical and vascular features of Takayasu arteritis at the time of ischemic stroke.
Conclusions: Our results showed a high prevalence of stroke in TA and revealed most of these events occurred concomitantly with diagnosed TA. Moreover, although four patients had strokes after diagnosis of TA, these occurred at a young age, demonstrating they were most likely the result of vascular changes secondary to TA. Stroke In Young Adults: A 4-Year Retrospective Hospital-Based Study, First Report From United Arab Emirates (P1.020)

Hypercoagulability and Vasculitis Unlike Cardioembolic Etiology Predict Bilateral Infarcts (P1.124)
CONCLUSIONS: Cardioembolic etiology of stroke occurs more often in patients with bilateral acute infarction on imaging, but only vasculitis and hypercoagulability as etiologies significantly increase the odds of bilateral acute infarction. Further studies are warranted to understand imaging characteristics of stroke in regard to etiology.Disclosure: Dr. Lorance has nothing to disclose. Dr. Monlezun, Jr has nothing to disclose. Ten year clinical experience with stroke and cerebral vasculitis
Publication date: Available online 8 January 2016 Source:Journal of Clinical Neuroscience Author(s): Peter A. Kempster, Catriona A. McLean, Thanh G. Phan Angiitis of the central nervous system (CNS) is difficult to diagnose but potentially fatal. When stroke occurs in a younger individual or is associated with multiple infarcts on imaging, clinicians must decide how far to pursue a possible diagnosis of vasculitis. The aim of this study is to establish the prevalence of primary and secondary cerebral angiitis among patients presenting with stroke. Hospital attendances over a 10year period were surveyed by searching fo...

Ischemic Stroke in Young Adults
This article reviews current knowledge on epidemiology, risk factors and causes, diagnostic considerations, management, and prognosis of ischemic stroke in young adults (those 55 years old and younger). RECENT FINDINGS The incidence of ischemic stroke in young adults has been increasing since the 1980s, which has occurred in parallel with increasing prevalence of vascular risk factors and substance abuse among the younger population. Young adults have a considerably wider range of risk factors than older patients, including age-specific factors such as pregnancy/puerperium and oral contraceptive use. Behavioral risk fac...

West Virginia University Pediatric Stroke Registry: Clinical Description and Risk Factors Identification in Patients From a Rural Area
Conclusion. Patients with the most common risk factors for stroke (cardiac disease) were overrepresented. This suggests that in children receiving medical attention in rural areas less common risk factors for stroke might not be identified, increasing the risk recurrence. Increased index of suspicion is needed about pediatric stroke in rural areas, and early transfer to a tertiary care center for identification of risk factors is mandatory.

Impact of Implementing Cardiac CT in Evaluating Patients Suspected of Cardioembolic Stroke
Conclusions: Implementing cardiac CT in assessing patients suspected of cardioembolic stroke added value to echocardiographic evaluation, by detecting major embolic potential findings. In addition, cardiac CT revealed additional potentially significant stroke-unrelated findings and CAD.
