Case Report: Myxedema Coma Caused by Immunoglobulin A Vasculitis in a Patient With Severe Hypothyroidism
Myxedema coma is a critical disorder with high mortality rates. Disruption of the compensatory mechanism for severe and long-term hypothyroidism by various causes leads to critical conditions, including hypothermia, respiratory failure, circulatory failure, and central nervous system dysfunction. Infectious diseases, stroke, myocardial infarction, sedative drugs, and cold exposure are considered the main triggers for myxedema coma. A 59-year-old Japanese woman presented with bilateral painful purpura on her lower legs. She was diagnosed with coexisting immunoglobulin A (IgA) vasculitis and severe IgA vasculitis with nephri...

New ERLEADA ® (apalutamide) Analysis Demonstrates Rapid, Deep Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) Response in Patients with Metastatic Castration-Sensitive Prostate Cancer (mCSPC)
SAN FRANCISCO, Feb. 14, 2022 – The Janssen Pharmaceutical Companies of Johnson & Johnson today announced new real-world evidence data showing the initiation of ERLEADA® (apalutamide) results in high rates of rapid and deep prostate-specific antigen (PSA) response among patients with metastatic castration-sensitive prostate cancer (mCSPC). In a separate post-hoc analysis of the registrational Phase 3 SPARTAN and TITAN studies, rapid and deep PSA responses with ERLEADA® were associated with improvement in patient-reported outcomes (PROs) related to quality of life, physical wellbeing, pain, and fatigue intensity. The...

Hypothyroidism risk associated with rheumatoid arthritis: A population-based retrospective cohort study
Studies on the thyroid disease risk in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) associated with comorbidities are limited. This population-based retrospective cohort study investigated the hypothyroidism risk in patients with RA and the role of comorbidities. We used Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database to identify 16,714 RA patients newly diagnosed in 2000 to 2008 and 66,856 control persons without RA, frequency matched by sex, age, and index year. Incidence and the RA group to controls hazard ratio of hypothyroidism were estimated. The hypothyroidism incidence was 1.74-fold higher in the RA group than ...

Challenges in the Management of Atrial Fibrillation With Subclinical Hyperthyroidism
Subclinical thyroid disorders have a high prevalence among older individuals and women. Subclinical hypothyroidism is diagnosed by elevated serum levels of thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) with thyroxine levels within the reference range, and subclinical hyperthyroidism is diagnosed by low TSH in conjunction with thyroxine and triiodothyronine levels within reference ranges. Atrial fibrillation is the most commonly diagnosed cardiac arrhythmia and has been associated with an increased risk of mortality, heart failure, stroke, and depression. Mechanistic data from animal and human physiology studies as well as observationa...

Fatal Adverse Events of Dabigatran Combined With Aspirin in Elderly Patients: An Analysis Using Data From VigiBase
Conclusion: The fatal adverse events associated with the combined use of dabigatran and aspirin in elderly patients were mainly serious bleeding events, which often occurred within 1 month. Most of these cases had medication errors and most of the patients had multiple diseases, medications, or other conditions at the same time that increase the risk of bleeding. It is suggested that prescription of dabigatran and aspirin in elderly patients should go along with alertness for medication errors, care for correct dose or control of other bleeding risk factors, and the combined medication time should be as short as possible ...

Triiodothyronine Aggravates Global Cerebral Ischemia-Reperfusion Injury in Mice
In this study, we examined the effect of T3 administration on DNA fragmentation induced by neuronal death and the activation of inflammatory cells such as astrocytes and microglia in the hippocampus following GCI. The content of nucleosomes generated by DNA fragmentation in the hippocampus was increased by GCI and further increased by T3 administration. The protein expression levels of glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP), an astrocytic marker, and Ionized calcium binding adaptor protein 1 (Iba1), a microglial marker, in the hippocampus were also increased by GCI and further increased by T3 administration. The levels of ...
