Suicide in Stroke Survivors: Epidemiology and Prevention
Abstract Stroke is a dramatic event and is associated with potentially severe consequences, including disability, mortality, and social costs. Stroke may occur at any age; however, most strokes occur in individuals aged 65 years and older. Previous research has found that stroke increases suicide risk, especially among women and younger patients. The aim of the current review is to investigate the relationship between suicide and stroke in order to determine which stroke patients are at elevated risk for suicide. Moreover, we review the literature in order to provide pharmacological treatment strategies for strok...

Suicidal ideation and attempts in patients with stroke: a population-based study
Abstract Stroke is known to be associated with an increase in the risk for suicide. However, there are very few population-based studies investigating the risk of suicidal ideation and attempts in patients with stroke. The purpose of this study was to compare the risk of suicidal ideation and attempts between patients with stroke and population without stroke using nationwide survey data. Individual-level data were obtained from 228,735 participants (4560 with stroke and 224,175 without stroke) of the 2013 Korean Community Health Survey. Demographic characteristics, socioeconomic status, physical health status, an...

Ischemic stroke of unclear aetiology: a case-by-case analysis and call for a multi-professional predictive, preventive and personalised approach
AbstractDue to the reactive medical approach applied to disease management, stroke has reached an epidemic scale worldwide. In 2019, the global stroke prevalence was 101.5 million people, wherefrom 77.2 million (about 76%) suffered from ischemic stroke; 20.7 and 8.4 million suffered from intracerebral and subarachnoid haemorrhage, respectively. Globally in the year 2019 — 3.3, 2.9 and 0.4 million individuals died of ischemic stroke, intracerebral and subarachnoid haemorrhage, respectively. During the last three decades, the absolute number of cases increased substantially. The current prevalence of stroke is 110 million ...

A study of suicidal ideation in acute ischemic stroke patients
Conclusion: Several factors may be associated with an increased risk of suicidal ideation in acute ischemic stroke patients, including pre-/post-stroke depression, more severe stroke, having no confidence in treatment, as well as living in rural region. Our findings may have implication in risk assessment and intervention for acute ischemic stroke patients in reducing the burdens of suicidal ideation.

Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the depressive symptoms in stroke survivors and the risk factors for depressive symptoms in stroke survivors. We included 33,991 participants who were 19 years or ...

Poststroke suicide attempts and completed suicides: A socioeconomic and nationwide perspective
Conclusions: Both clinical and socioeconomic factors increase the risk of poststroke suicide attempts. This suggests a need for psychosocial support and suicide preventive interventions in high-risk groups of stroke patients.

Serotonergic Genes and Suicidal Ideation 2 Weeks and 1 Year After Stroke in Korea.
CONCLUSIONS: Individuals with the 5-HTR2a 1438 A/A genotype were more susceptible to suicidal ideation 2 weeks after stroke. Careful evaluation and management are indicated for those with increased genetic vulnerability, particularly during the acute phase of stroke. PMID: 23973249 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Plasma-based proteomics reveals lipid metabolic and immunoregulatory dysregulation in post-stroke depression.
CONCLUSIONS: Early perturbation of lipid metabolism and immunoregulation may be involved in the pathophysiology of PSD. The combination of increased gelsolin levels accompanied by decreased haptoglobin levels shows promise as a plasma-based diagnostic biomarker panel for detecting increased PSD risk in post-stroke patients. A Depression Screening Protocol for Patients With Acute Stroke: A Quality Improvement Project
Conclusion: Implementation of the Evidence Based Depression Screening and Treatment (EBDST) protocol improved early detection and treatment of PSD in the hospitalized patients with acute stroke before discharge. The EBDST protocol promoted systematic evidence-based depression screening in the hospitalized patients with acute stroke. Use of the EBDST protocol may further improve long-term health outcomes, decrease mortality, and improve functional recovery and quality of life.

Rates and correlates of suicidal ideation among stroke survivors: a meta-analysis
Conclusion Despite some limitations, this meta-analysis shows that about one out of eight stroke survivors has suicidal ideation. Thus, there is enough evidence to support the use of routine screening and early interventions to prevent and treat suicidal ideation after stroke, especially among subjects carrying specific correlates.

Prevalence and associated factors of self-reported ischaemic heart disease and/or stroke: a cross-sectional nationally representative community-based study of adults in Malawi in 2017
Conclusions Almost 1 in 10 women and 1 in 20 men aged 18–69 years had IHD and/or stroke in Malawi. Several risk and protective factors were found that can be targeted in population health interventions.

Associations between suicidal ideation and health-related quality of life among community-dwelling stroke survivors: 2013 –2017 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey
ConclusionIndividuals with stroke showed higher rates for problems on the EQ-5D, SI, and depression compared to the general population. They also demonstrated significant associations between SI and each EQ-5D dimension except physical activity, especially pain/discomfort and depression/anxiety. The study ’s findings can be referred to when predicting suicide risk in individuals with stroke by analyzing their EQ-5D scores.

Apathy and suicide-related ideation 3 months after stroke: a cross-sectional study
Background: Both apathy and suicide are common in poststroke patients. However, the association between poststroke apathy and suicide-related ideation (SI) in Chinese stroke patients is not clear and poorly understood. The aim of this study was to examine the association between apathy and SI in stroke. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted to investigate the association in 518 stroke survivors from Acute Stroke Unit of the Prince of Wales Hospital in Hong Kong. Geriatric Mental State Examination-Version A (GMS) and Neuropsychiatric Inventory-apathy subscale (NPI-apathy) were employed to assess poststroke SI and a...
