Efficacy and safety of intravenous thrombolysis for acute ischemic stroke in cancer patients: a systemic review and meta-analysis.
Authors: Huang S, Lu X, Tang LV, Hu Y Abstract The efficacy and safety of intravenous thrombolysis (IVT) for acute ischemic stroke (AIS) in cancer patients remained uncertain due to low level evidence in the latest guideline for AIS. The aim of this study was to assess the efficacy and safety of IVT in cancer patients with stronger evidence. We searched Medline, Embase, CENTRAL and ClinicalTrials.gov until April 2020 for studies reporting outcomes of functional independence, hemorrhagic transformation (HT), symptomatic intracranial hemorrhage (SICH), major bleeding (MB), in-hospital mortality or 3-month mortality a...

Association between Accreditation and In-Hospital Mortality in Patients with Major Cardiovascular Diseases in South Korean Hospitals: Pre-Post Accreditation Comparison.
This study targeted patients who had been hospitalized for the three diseases at the general hospitals newly accredited by the government in 2014. Thirty-day mortality rates of three years before and after accreditation were compared. Mortality within 30 days of hospitalization for the three diseases was lower after accreditation than before (7.34% vs. 6.15% for AMI; 4.64% vs. 3.80% for IS; and 18.52% vs. 15.81% for HS). In addition, hospitals that meet the criteria of the patient care process domain have a statistically lower mortality rate than hospitals that do not. In the newly accredited Korean general hospital, it wa...

Spontaneous Subarachnoid Haemorrhage as a Cause of Out-of-Hospital Death
Spontaneous subarachnoid haemorrhage (SAH) is a neurological emergency with high mortality and morbidity. The overall incidence rate has declined over the last centuries, but is still 6.3 per 100.000 persons per year in Europe.1 Older studies found that 12% of patients with SAH died before they reached medical attention.2,3 Prehospital systems have undergone major changes in recent years, but we have been unable to identify any recent European studies that could elucidate if these numbers remain stable.

Repetitive peripheral magnetic stimulation combined with intensive physical therapy for gait disturbance after hemorrhagic stroke: an open-label case series
In this pilot study, we aimed to determine the safety and feasibility of a 15-day protocol consisting of in-hospital repetitive peripheral magnetic stimulation (rPMS) combined with intensive physical therapy for the recovery of the gait disturbance in chronic stroke patients with lower limb hemiparesis. Seven hemorrhagic stroke patients with lower limb hemiparesis and gait disturbance (age: 50–78; time from onset of stroke: 7–107 months) were enrolled. rPMS was applied to the muscles of the paretic lower limb with a parabolic coil. A train of stimuli at a frequency of 20 Hz was applied for 3 s followed by a 27-s ...

Clinical outcomes of patients treated using very short duration dual antiplatelet therapy after implantation of biodegradable-polymer drug-eluting stents: rationale and design of a prospective multicenter REIWA registry
This study is an observational, prospective, multicenter registry encompassing the entire local medical region of Iwate Prefecture (northern area of mainland Japan). A total of 1200 patients who underwent successful PCI with a novel thin strut BP-DES (Synergy, Ultimaster or Orsiro) and are considered to be appropriate patients for very short DAPT, are registered and subsequently administered 1-month DAPT followed by P2Y12 inhibitor monotherapy (clopidogr el 75 mg/day or prasugrel 3.75 mg/day). The primary endpoint was a composite of cardiovascular and bleeding events, which included cardiovascular death, spontaneous myoc...

Ischemic Stroke and Intracranial Hemorrhages During Impella Cardiac Support
Impella is a percutaneously placed, ventricular assist device for short-term cardiac support. We aimed to study acute neurologic complications during short-term cardiac support with Impella. We reviewed prospectively collected data of 79 consecutive persons implanted with Impella at a single tertiary center. Acute neurologic events (ANE) were defined as ischemic strokes or intracranial hemorrhages. Among those with ANE, specific causes of ischemic and hemorrhagic events were collected and discussed. Of 79 persons with Impella with median 8 days of support (range 1–33 days), six (7.5%) developed ANE at a median of 5 days ...

Sex differences in the effects of the moon on ischemic stroke incidence: new findings from Beijing, China.
Abstract Stroke is a major cause of death and disability in China, and no therapies have proven effective to prevent it. Popular belief holds that the lunar cycle affects human physiology, behavior, and health. The aim of our study is to determine whether the lunar cycle impacts the incidence of stroke subtypes [intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH), transient ischemic attack (TIA) and ischemic stroke (IS)]. We retrospectively extracted the discharge registry data of all patients with first-ever acute stroke hospitalized in the affiliated hospital of Beijing University of Traditional Chinese Medicine during 2002-2015. Th...

Association of chronic kidney disease with outcomes in acute stroke
AbstractPrevious studies have found an association between chronic kidney disease and poor outcomes in stroke patients. However, there is a paucity of literature evaluating this association by stroke type. We therefore aimed to explore the association between CKD and stroke outcomes according to type of stroke. The data consisting of 594,681 stroke patients were acquired from Universal Coverage Health Security Insurance Scheme Database in Thailand. Binary logistic regression was used to assess the relationship of CKD and outcomes, which were as follows; in-hospital mortality, long length of stay (>3  days), pneumonia, ...
