Red blood cell distribution width as a predictor of cardiovascular outcomes in extensive aortoiliac disease
CONCLUSIONS: RDW is a widely available and low-cost marker that was able to independently predict long-term AHF, stroke, MACE, and all-cause mortality in patients with extensive aortoiliac disease submitted to revascularization. This biomarker could help assess which patients would likely benefit from stricter follow-up in the long-term.PMID:36168948 | DOI:10.23736/S0021-9509.22.12210-X

Association between home-based exercise using a pedometer and clinical prognosis after endovascular treatment in patients with peripheral artery disease
CONCLUSIONS: Good self-recording of pedometer measurements was associated with favorable prognosis in patients with PAD following EVT.PMID:36126908 | DOI:10.1016/j.jjcc.2022.09.005

Serum cholesterol loading capacity on macrophages is linked to coronary atherosclerosis and cardiovascular event risk in rheumatoid arthritis
CONCLUSION: CLC was linked to long-term cardiovascular event risk in RA and associated with high-risk low attenuation and obstructive coronary plaque presence and burden in bDMARD non-users. Its prospective validation as a predictive biomarker may be, therefore, warranted.PMID:36113961 | DOI:10.1136/rmdopen-2022-002411

A Case of Giant Cell Arteritis Presenting As Catastrophic Posterior Circulation Stroke: A Diagnostic Dilemma
We describe a case of a 75-year-old woman who presented with jaw claudication and temporal headache. A colour duplex ultrasonography and later biopsy of the temporal arteries confirmed GCA and she was commenced on oral steroids. She was subsequently readmitted with a new worsening vision of both eyes and confusion. Her brain images revealed acute bilateral vertebral artery thrombus with haemorrhagic transformation. She was loaded on intravenous steroids. The next day she developed vomiting, bilateral visual loss and a cardiac arrest from ventricular fibrillation. Following the return of spontaneous circulation, she was tak...

Conservative treatment of peripheral arterial disease
Internist (Berl). 2022 May 9. doi: 10.1007/s00108-022-01342-8. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPatients with peripheral arterial disease (PAD) often have polyvascular atherosclerosis and are at increased risk of major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE), such as cardiovascular death, myocardial infarction or stroke, and major adverse limb events (MALE), such as amputation and acute limb ischemia. Therefore, the aim of conservative treatment is the reduction of MACE and MALE. In patients with intermittent claudication, the aim is also to extend walking distance. Management of risk factors includes smoking cessation, statin t...

Arterial Atherosclerosis: Vascular Surgery Interventions
Am Fam Physician. 2022 Jan 1;105(1):65-72.ABSTRACTAtherosclerotic vascular disease is a leading cause of death worldwide. Atherosclerotic stenosis of the internal carotid or intracranial arteries causes up to 15% of strokes. Peripheral artery disease affects up to one in five people in the United States who are 60 years and older and nearly one-half of those who are 85 years and older. Renal artery stenosis may affect up to 5% of people with isolated hypertension and up to 40% of people with other atherosclerotic diseases. All patients with atherosclerotic vascular disease should receive a comprehensive program of guidelin...
