Cerebral Microbleeds Determine Long-Term Mortality in Acute Ischemic Stroke Patients with Lacunar Subtype (P1.015)
CONCLUSIONS: The presence, multiplicity and distribution of CMBs were associated with increased mortality in lacunar stroke patients. The detection and evaluation of CMBs is of value in predicting long-term prognosis in lacunar stroke patients. Study Supported: None.Disclosure: Dr. Song has nothing to disclose. Thoracic aortic calcification is associated with incident stroke in the general population in addition to established risk factors
Conclusion Calcification of the thoracic aorta, more specifically its descending segment, is associated with incident stroke in addition to established risk factors. CAC outperforms aortic calcification as a stroke predictor.

Heart attack, stroke and diabetes 'can shorten life by 23 years'
Conclusion This study used two large cohort-derived data sets to estimate the number of years of life lost as the result of a history of heart attack, stroke or diabetes across different ages. The study's large size, relevance to the UK and long-term follow-up increases our confidence in its conclusions and their relevance to England and Wales. As with all studies, it has limitations, but these were relatively small and unlikely to affect the main conclusions. This study shows a history of stroke, type 2 diabetes and heart attack can significantly shorten life expectancy, especially if these conditions are developed earli...

IJERPH, Vol. 12, Pages 12618-12627: Lower Risk of Stroke after Deformity Surgery: Long Term Benefit Demonstrated by a National Cohort Study
Conclusions: In this national cohort of more than 13,000 ASD patients covering 10 years, stroke was approximately 25% less likely to happen in patients who underwent spinal fusion surgery than those who received medical management. Therefore, spinal fusion surgery may provide a protective effect against stroke in adult patients with spinal deformity.

Comparison of Risk Scores for the Prediction of Stroke in African Americans: Findings from the Jackson Heart Study
Conclusions Both scores were associated with incident stroke in a dose–response fashion; however, the CVD risk model was more discriminating than the CVH model. The CVH score may still be preferable for its simplicity in application to broad patient populations and public health efforts.

Risk Factors for In-Hospital Mortality among Ischemic Stroke Patients in Southern Taiwan
Conclusion Nearly 30% of in-hospital mortality is associated with preventable factors. The prognosis of acute stroke can be improved by increased focus on reducing serious complications after stroke, particularly on the prevention of infection, heart disease, and increased intracranial pressure.

PPARG gene C161T CT/TT associated with lower blood lipid levels and ischemic stroke from large-artery atherosclerosis in a Han population in Guangdong.
CONCLUSION: In this Han population, PPARG C161T CT/TT was associated with LAA ischemic stroke and lower levels of blood TC and LDL-C, but was not an independent risk factor for LAA ischemic stroke. PMID: 27264718 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Renal Function Predicts Outcomes in Patients with Ischaemic Stroke and Haemorrhagic Stroke
Conclusions: Patients with haemorrhagic stroke, in particular with acute kidney injury during hospitalisation had significantly worse outcomes than patients with ischaemic stroke. Assessment of kidney function is prerequisite to employ the necessary measures to decrease the risk of in-hospital mortality among patients with acute stroke. Appropriate approach to patients with renal dysfunction (adequate hydration, avoidance of nephrotoxic drugs, drug dose adjustment etc) should be considered as preventive and therapeutic strategies in the management of acute stroke.Kidney Blood Press Res 2016;41:424-433

Insights Into Timing, Risk Factors, and Outcomes of Stroke and Transient Ischemic Attack After Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement in the PARTNER Trial (Placement of Aortic Transcatheter Valves) Structural Heart Disease
Conclusions— Risk of stroke or TIA is highest early after TAVR and is associated with increased 1-year mortality. Modifications of TAVR, emboli-prevention devices, and better intraprocedural pharmacological protection may mitigate this risk. Clinical Trial Registration— URL: http://www.clinicaltrials.gov. Unique identifier: NCT00530894.

Targeting the role of lipoprotein (a) in stroke.
Authors: Garelnabi M, Mazhar Z, Hughes A Abstract Stroke is the third leading cause of death in the United States, behind only heart disease and cancer, with over 140,000 associated deaths per year. Considerable research is ongoing to examine the role of modifiable risk factors which may cause or contribute to a stroke occurring. Although age and family history are generally considered to be major risk factors, there are several modifiable and non-modifiable risk factors that are linked to the pathogenesis of a stroke. Lipoprotein (a), or Lp(a), is a type of low-density lipoprotein containing an integral apoB100 co...

Risk of Stroke in Elderly Dialysis Patients.
Authors: Han SS, Ryu DR, Joo KW, Lim CS, Kim YL, Kang SW, Kim YS, Kim DK Abstract Despite the current knowledge about the risk of stroke and its related factors in general population, this issue in elderly patients receiving dialysis remains unresolved. Firstly, to compare the risk of stroke between hemodialysis (HD) and peritoneal dialysis (PD), data on 13,065 incident dialysis patients (aged ≥ 65 years; 10,675 in HD and 2,390 in PD) were retrieved from the Korean Health Insurance dataset. Secondly, to identify the risk factors of stroke amongst various clinical and laboratory parameters in HD, 980 elderly patie...

Stroke in patients with prosthetic valve endocarditis : Single-center cohort study in China.
CONCLUSION: Stroke is a common complication in PVE that increases patient mortality. Rheumatic heart disease, double valve replacement, and fungal infection may be risk factors for patients with PVE complicated by stroke. PMID: 31076822 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Depression may not be a risk factor for mortality in stroke patients with nonsurgical treatment: A retrospective case-controlled study
Patients with depression have more comorbidities than those without depression. The cost of depression-associated comorbidities accounts for the largest portion of the growing cost of depression treatment. Patients with depression have a higher risk of stroke with poor prognoses than those without depression; however, previous studies evaluating the relationship between depression and stroke prognosis have not accounted for surgical treatment or other risk factors. Therefore, we investigated whether depression is a risk factor for mortality in stroke patients with nonsurgical treatment after adjusting for other risk factor...
