Mortality risk after the first occurrence of osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures in the general population: A nationwide cohort study
This study aimed to evaluate mortality risk after the first occurrence of OVCF in the general population using a nationwide dataset from the Korean National Health Insurance System. We identified 291,203 newly diagnosed patients with OVCF and 873,609 patients without OVCF at a ratio of 1:3 matched by sex and age between 2010 and 2012. We investigated the latent characteristics of patients’ demographic information and chronic comorbidities that could affect mortality when diagnosed with OVCF. By comparing the cohort data, the hazar d ratio for subsequent mortality in patients with OVCF was calculated and adjusted based on...

Metformin adherence and the risk of cardiovascular disease: a population-based cohort study
CONCLUSIONS: This study revealed that metformin adherence in patients with T2DM who required a first-line treatment may reduce the risk of subsequent CVD. Despite the availability of numerous novel antiglycemic agents, metformin adherence by patients who require a combination of antiglycemic agents provides an additional benefit of CVD protection.PMID:37051071 | PMC:PMC10084537 | DOI:10.1177/20406223231163115

Pioglitazone Use and Reduced Risk of Dementia in Patients With Diabetes Mellitus With a History of Ischemic Stroke
DISCUSSION: Pioglitazone use is associated with a lower risk of dementia in DM patients, particularly in those with a history of stroke or ischemic heart disease, suggesting the possibility of applying a personalized approach when choosing pioglitazone to suppress dementia in DM patients.PMID:36792375 | DOI:10.1212/WNL.0000000000207069

Cardiovascular Outcomes according to Comorbidities and Low-Density Lipoprotein Cholesterol in Korean People with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus
CONCLUSION: For primary prevention of CVD in Korean adults with T2DM, it can be helpful to lower LDL-C targets when there are chronic kidney disease, HT, a long duration of diabetes mellitus, or three or more CV risk factors.PMID:36727163 | DOI:10.4093/dmj.2021.0344

Uveitis increases the risk of stroke among patients with ankylosing spondylitis: A nationwide population-based longitudinal study
Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is known to increase the risk of stroke. Among patients with AS, uveitis is the most common extra-articular manifestation. However, no previous investigations have discussed the association between uveitis and the risk for developing stroke in patients with AS. This retrospective cohort study aimed to explore the relationship between uveitis and the incidence of stroke in patients with AS by obtaining medical records from January 1, 2000, to December 31, 2015, from the National Health Insurance Research Database, according to the International Classification of Diseases, 9th Revision, Clinical M...
