Cardiovascular events risk in patients with systemic autoimmune diseases: a prognostic systematic review and meta-analysis
CONCLUSION: Patients with SAD present an increased risk of CV morbidity and mortality, which should be considered when establishing therapeutic strategies. These findings support the role of systemic inflammation in the development of atherosclerosis-driven disease.PMID:37650912 | DOI:10.1007/s00392-023-02291-4

Artificial intelligence-based preventive, personalized and precision medicine for cardiovascular disease/stroke risk assessment in rheumatoid arthritis patients: a narrative review
Rheumatol Int. 2023 Aug 30. doi: 10.1007/s00296-023-05415-1. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe challenges associated with diagnosing and treating cardiovascular disease (CVD)/Stroke in Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) arise from the delayed onset of symptoms. Existing clinical risk scores are inadequate in predicting cardiac events, and conventional risk factors alone do not accurately classify many individuals at risk. Several CVD biomarkers consider the multiple pathways involved in the development of atherosclerosis, which is the primary cause of CVD/Stroke in RA. To enhance the accuracy of CVD/Stroke risk assessment in the RA...

Increased Risk of Cardiovascular Diseases in Rheumatoid Arthritis: A Systematic Review
This study systematically reviews various CV diseases that might occur with RA including heart failure (HF), coronary artery disease, acute coronary syndrome, ischemic heart disease, stroke, cardiac death, venous thromboembolism, and valvular diseases. The relation between these complications and RA is specifically assessed. Systematic search was carried out on literature reporting the risk of each of the CV diseases in RA patients from databases in accordance with Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. The databases searched were MEDLINE (through PubMed) and Google Scholar ...

Anticancer, Cardio-Protective and Anti-Inflammatory Potential of Natural-Sources-Derived Phenolic Acids
Molecules. 2022 Oct 26;27(21):7286. doi: 10.3390/molecules27217286.ABSTRACTPhenolic acids (PAs) are one of the utmost prevalent classes of plant-derived bioactive chemicals. They have a specific taste and odor, and are found in numerous medicinal and food plants, such as Cynomorium coccineum L., Prunus domestica (L.), and Vitis vinifera L. Their biosynthesis, physical and chemical characteristics and structure-activity relationship are well understood. These phytochemicals and their derivatives exert several bioactivities including but not limited to anticancer, cardioprotective, anti-inflammatory, immune-regulatory and an...

Giant cell arteritis-related stroke in a large inception cohort: A comparative study
CONCLUSIONS: The location of stroke and assessment of ECU results and CRP level could help improve the prognosis of GCA-related stroke by bringing this condition to the clinician's attention more quickly, thus shortening diagnostic delay.PMID:35512621 | DOI:10.1016/j.semarthrit.2022.152020

Updates in the Impact of Chronic Systemic Inflammation on Vascular Inflammation by Positron Emission Tomography (PET)
Curr Cardiol Rep. 2022 Feb 16. doi: 10.1007/s11886-022-01651-2. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPURPOSE OF REVIEW: In this review, we focus on the clinical and epidemiological studies pertaining to systemic and vascular inflammation by positron emission tomography (PET) in patients with chronic inflammatory conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis (RA), systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), and psoriasis to highlight the importance of chronic systemic inflammation on vascular inflammation by PET in these disease states.RECENT FINDINGS: Recent clinical and translation advancements have demonst...

A journey through clinic and research
I started to study Medicine at the University of Genoa, Italy more than 20 years ago and I now realize that I was quite far from understanding what ‘Medicine’ really means. After weeks and weeks spent on books during the first year, I understood that becoming a MD not only requires the willingness to help people with health problems, but also strong motivation and dedication to learn a huge amount of notions. In Italy, as it is the case for several other countries, the University courses last 6 years, during which the MD student is fully engaged by individual study, lessons and seminars, exercises, and internships. Wit...

Hypertension and comorbidities in rural and urban Chinese older people: an epidemiological sub-analysis from the SAGE study.
CONCLUSIONS: Our study implies that health promotion policies targeting older people should be developed. Rural areas should be a priority, and investment in the quality of healthcare in rural areas is urgently needed. PMID: 32886761 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Biological agents reduce cardiovascular events in rheumatoid arthritis non-responsive to tumor necrosis factor-inhibitors – a national cohort study
ConclusionsRA TNFi non-responder patients who received second line tocilizumab or abatacept had more benefit on CV events prevention compared with rituximab.

Rheumatoid Arthritis: Atherosclerosis Imaging and Cardiovascular Risk Assessment Using Machine and Deep Learning –Based Tissue Characterization
AbstractPurpose of the ReviewRheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic, autoimmune disease which may result in a higher risk of cardiovascular (CV) events and stroke. Tissue characterization and risk stratification of patients with rheumatoid arthritis are a challenging problem. Risk stratification of RA patients using traditional risk factor –based calculators either underestimates or overestimates the CV risk. Advancements in medical imaging have facilitated early and accurate CV risk stratification compared to conventional cardiovascular risk calculators.Recent FindingIn recent years, a link between carotid atheroscleros...

Association of galectin ‐3 with markers of myocardial function, atherosclerosis, and vascular fibrosis in patients with rheumatoid arthritis
ConclusionsIn a relatively well ‐controlled cohort of RA patients with low‐grade systemic inflammation and long‐standing disease, serum galectin‐3 might be useful as a marker of cardiac function and cardiovascular fibrosis.

Glycogen synthase kinase 3 β helps heart to pump better in obese patients
Obesity is a growing problem worldwide and is associated with a wide range of comorbidities such as type-2 diabetes (T2D), rheumatoid arthritis, cognitive impairment and dementia, hypertension, stroke and heart failure [1]. The global obesity pandemic affects all age groups. A recent study, based on body mass index (BMI) in over 68 million subjects from 195 countries, suggests that prevalence of metabolic diseases was increased in high BMI subjects globally in the past 20  years [2]. The increased BMI has been shown to be pathogenically related to several diseases including cardiovascular and stroke-related diseases [3].
