Similarities and differences in systemic risk factors for retinal artery occlusion and retinal vein occlusion: A nationwide case-control study
CONCLUSION: Differences in the level of associations with the included risk factors suggests differences in the pathophysiologies of the two diseases. The main pathophysiology associated with RAO was atherosclerosis, whereas the main pathophysiology associated with RVO was changes in the pressure gradients of the eyes.PMID:36056288 | DOI:10.1007/s10792-022-02483-3

Systemic and Ocular Adverse Events with Intravitreal Anti-VEGF Therapy Used in the Treatment of Diabetic Retinopathy: a Review
AbstractPurpose of ReviewIntravitreal anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) agents are used routinely in the management of neovascular conditions including proliferative diabetic retinopathy and diabetic macular edema. While the efficacy of anti-VEGF agents has been well-validated, their ocular and systemic adverse events should always be considered and discussed with patients. The aim of this review is to discuss the most recent literature reports regarding the various ocular and systemic adverse events associated with intravitreal anti-VEGF treatment in diabetic retinopathy.Recent FindingsThe most frequently rep...

Health benefits of astaxanthin against age-related diseases of multiple organs: A comprehensive review
Crit Rev Food Sci Nutr. 2022 Jun 16:1-66. doi: 10.1080/10408398.2022.2084600. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAge-related diseases are associated with increased morbidity in the past few decades and the cost associated with the treatment of these age-related diseases exerts a substantial impact on social and health care expenditure. Anti-aging strategies aim to mitigate, delay and reverse aging-associated diseases, thereby improving quality of life and reducing the burden of age-related pathologies. The natural dietary antioxidant supplementation offers substantial pharmacological and therapeutic effects against various dise...

Prevalence and associated relating factors in patients with hereditary retinal dystrophy: a nationwide population-based study in Taiwan
CONCLUSIONS: 74% of the diagnosed HRD are retinitis pigmentosa. Population-based data suggested an increased incidence of cataract in younger patients, whereas older HRD patients are more susceptible to develop CME. Further work is needed to elucidate the mechanism between these ophthalmological disorders and HRD.PMID:35396285 | DOI:10.1136/bmjopen-2021-054111

Diabetes is caused by elevated glucose levels in the blood, which can lead to several complications like glaucoma, cataract, kidney failure, diabetic ketoacidosis, heart attack, and stroke. According to recent statistics, China, India, and the US rank at the top three positions with regards to the number of patients affected by diabetes. A Case of Diagnosis of Occipital Lobe Epilepsy Complicated by Right Hemianopsia Associated with Left Occipital Lobe Cerebral Infarction
We report a case of occipital lobe epilepsy (OLE) in a patient with occipital lobe stroke whose diagnosis was complicated by homonymous hemianopsia. An 81-year-old woman presented with a complaint of “blurred vision” on the right side and was kept under outpatient observation at the Hirabayashi Eye Clinic for homonymous lower right hemianopsia, glaucoma, and post-cataract surgery. Her past medical history included hypertension, angina pectoris, atrial fibrillation, diabetes mellitus, and lef t occipital lobe cerebral infarction. The corrected visual acuity and intraocular pressure were 20/16 and 12 mm Hg and 20/20 and ...

Ocular Manifestations, Visual Field Pattern, and Visual Field Test Performance in Traumatic Brain Injury and Stroke
CONCLUSION: Various ocular manifestations were found, and a considerable proportion of patients were experiencing VF defects and showed unreliable VF test performance. Our findings suggest that accurate evaluation and rehabilitation of visual function should be a matter of greater concern and emphasis in the management of TBI and stroke patients, besides systemic diseases.PMID:35036002 | PMC:PMC8759901 | DOI:10.1155/2022/1703806
