Transforming growth factor- β, Interleukin-23 and interleukin-1β modulate TH22 response during active multidrug-resistant tuberculosis
Immunology. 2023 Sep 16. doi: 10.1111/imm.13698. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTWe previously reported that patients with multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) showed low systemic and Mtb-induced Th22 responses associated to high sputum bacillary load and severe lung lesions suggesting that Th22 response could influence the ability of these patients to control bacillary growth and tissue damage. In MDR-TB patients, the percentage of IL-22+ cells inversely correlates with the proportion of senescent PD-1+ T cells. Herein, we aimed to evaluate the pathways involved on the regulation of systemic and Mtb-induced Th22 respon...

Temozolomide-based sonodynamic therapy induces immunogenic cell death in glioma
CONCLUSIONS: TMZ-based SDT was capable of triggering ICD in glioma. The discovery of TMZ as a sonosensitizer have shown great promise in the treatment of GBM.PMID:37716612 | DOI:10.1016/j.clim.2023.109772

Hepatic safety and efficacy of immunomodulatory drugs used in patients with autoimmune hepatitis
CONCLUSION: Among 25 AIH patients who were treated with immunomodulatory drugs for different reasons, the majority had a fovorable course, relapse was frequent in difficult-to-treat patients who received belimumab, and four with concomitant IBD had insufficient response.PMID:37716078 | DOI:10.1016/j.jaut.2023.103113

Harnessing autoimmunity with dominant self-peptide: Modulating the sustainability of tissue-preferential antigen-specific Tregs by governing the binding stability via peptide flanking residues
J Autoimmun. 2023 Sep 14;140:103094. doi: 10.1016/j.jaut.2023.103094. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTSensitization to self-peptides induces various immunological responses, from autoimmunity to tumor immunity, depending on the peptide sequence; however, the underlying mechanisms remain unclear, and thus, curative therapeutic options considering immunity balance are limited. Herein, two overlapping dominant peptides of myelin proteolipid protein, PLP136-150 and PLP139-151, which induce different forms of experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE), monophasic and relapsing EAE, respectively, were investigated. Mice with ...

Amisulpride attenuates 5-fluorouracil-induced cognitive deficits via modulating hippocampal Wnt/GSK-3 β/β-catenin signaling in Wistar rats
This study aimed at investigating the effects of chronic treatment with amisulpride (5 mg/kg/day) in the management of 5-fluorouracil (5-FU)-induced cognitive deficits in Wistar rats. Rats received 5 intraperitoneal injections of 5-FU (25 mg/kg every 3 days). 5-FU treatment induced impairments in spatial learning (reduction in object location discrimination ratio) and non-spatial learning (reduction in novel object recognition discrimination ratio). Moreover, 5-FU induced a decrease in the activity of the Wnt/GSK-3β/β-catenin pathway with a decrease in brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) level in the hippocampus. Th...

BET proteins inhibitor JQ1 impairs GM-CSF-promoted peritoneal macrophage self-renewal and IL-4-induced alternative polarization
Int Immunopharmacol. 2023 Sep 14;124(Pt A):110942. doi: 10.1016/j.intimp.2023.110942. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPeritoneal macrophages (PMs), which resided in peritoneal cavity, are crucial to maintain tissue homeostasis and immunity. Macrophage self-renewal and polarization states are critical for PM population homeostasis and function. However, the underlying molecular mechanism that regulates self-renewal and polarization of PMs is still unclear and needs to be explored. Here, we demonstrated that PMs self-renewal was stimulated by granulocyte macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF), but not by macrophage colo...

Genetic polymorphisms of rs73620203 in the transforming growth interacting factor gene associated with rheumatoid arthritis in a Chinese population
CONCLUSION: Our study provides the first evidence that rs73620203 is associated with RA susceptibility and the relationship between TGIF gene SNPs and the regulation of bone metabolism in RA patients.PMID:37716127 | DOI:10.1016/j.imbio.2023.152741

COVID-19 vaccine effectiveness against hospitalizations in Paraguay, May 2021-April 2022: A test-negative design
CONCLUSIONS: This study contributes to our understanding of COVID-19 VE in Latin America and to global understanding of vaccines that have not been widely used in North America and Europe. VE estimates from Paraguay can parameterize models to estimate the impact of the national COVID-19 vaccination campaign in Paraguay and similar settings.PMID:37716830 | DOI:10.1016/j.vaccine.2023.09.015

Evaluation of an iELISA for detection and quantification of rabies antibodies in domestic dog sera
Vaccine. 2023 Sep 14:S0264-410X(23)01058-7. doi: 10.1016/j.vaccine.2023.09.004. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTMany rabies endemic-countries have recognized rabies as a public health problem that can be eliminated. As a result, some countries have started implementing small-scale vaccination programs with the aim of scaling them up. Post-vaccination serological monitoring is crucial to assess the efficacy of these programs. The recommended serological tests, the rapid fluorescent focus inhibition test, and the fluorescent antibody virus neutralization (FAVN) are accurate; however, the procedures require considerable experti...

Efficacy and immunogenicity of a veterinary vaccine candidate against tick-borne encephalitis in dogs
Vaccine. 2023 Sep 14:S0264-410X(23)01089-7. doi: 10.1016/j.vaccine.2023.09.019. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTTick-borne encephalitis (TBE) is a severe neuroinfection of humans. Dogs are also commonly infected with tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV). These infections are usually asymptomatic, but sometimes show clinical signs similar to those seen in humans and can be fatal. To date, there is no TBEV vaccine available for use in dogs. To address this need, a TBEV vaccine candidate for dogs based on inactivated whole virus antigen was developed. The safety, immunogenicity, and efficacy of the vaccine candidate were tested...
