Bullous cellulitis as an extraordinary manifestation of a Vibrio cholerae O1 Ogawa infection
We describe a case of a 63-year-old Chinese woman with multiple medical comorbidities on corticosteroid therapy who developed fever and a painful swelling on her left leg after being pricked by a branch while gardening. There was no abdominal pain, vomiting or diarrhea. A diagnosis of bullous cellulitis was made clinically, and blood was sent for bacteriological culture. A beta-hemolytic commashaped gram-negative bacillus was isolated from the blood. It was also oxidase-positive and produced an acid/alkaline (A/K) reaction on triple sugar iron agar. It was identified biochemically as Vibrio cholerae. After additional testi...

Evaluating Preoperative Intravenous Iron and Erythropoietin Treatment and Outcomes in Cardiac Surgery Patients
CONCLUSIONS: Infection (P = 0.258), mortality rate (P = 0.440), and RBC utilization (P = 0.469) in the two groups of injection and non-injection were not significantly different.PMID:37645003 | PMC:PMC10461381 | DOI:10.5812/aapm-130899

In conclusion, an SBP level below 130 mmHg was found to be associated with longevity among older women. The longer SBP was controlled at a level between 110 and 130 mmHg, the higher the survival probability to age 90. Preventing age-related rises in SBP and increasing the time with controlled BP levels constitute important measures for achieving longevity. « Back to Top

Autoimmune gastritis as an unexpected cause of diarrhea in a young adult with type I diabetes: a case report
ConclusionThis case illustrates the importance of recognition of red flag findings in a patient with known autoimmune disease. Following well-established health maintenance recommendations for individuals with T1DM ensures that common comorbidities will be detected. Autoimmune gastritis, while a rarer pathology in the pediatric population, deserves consideration in patients with pre-existing autoimmune conditions and new gastrointestinal or neurologic symptoms, as AIG can be associated with poor outcomes and risk of malignancy. Initial lab findings associated with an eventual diagnosis of AIG typically include anemia, iron...

In this study, we tested the hypothesis that periodontal disease (PD) as a source of infection alters inflammatory activation and Aβ phagocytosis by the microglial cells. Experimental PD was induced using ligatures in C57BL/6 mice for 1, 10, 20, and 30 days to assess the progression of PD. Animals without ligatures were used as controls. Ligature placement caused progressive periodontal disease and bone resorption that was already significant on day 1 post-ligation and continued to increase until day 30. The severity of periodontal disease increased the frequency of activated microglia in the brains on day 30 by 36...

SENS Research Foundation 2023 Annual Report
The SENS Research Foundation has released its 2023 annual report. This is one of the few non-profit organizations focused on advancing the state of research and development of rejuvenation therapies. It exists in the same family tree as the Methuselah Foundation and LEV Foundation, and all three now have somewhat different areas of focus within the same broad outline. In comparison to the SENS Research Foundation, the Methuselah Foundation gives more attention to tissue engineering, while LEV Foundation is presently investigating combinations of potential rejuvenation therapies in animal models, a sorely neglected area of ...

Chromophobe-like carcinoma of the thymus: A clinicopathological and immunohistochemical correlation of 5 cases
Pathol Res Pract. 2023 Jun 20;248:154629. doi: 10.1016/j.prp.2023.154629. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTFive cases of primary thymic carcinoma with distinct histopathological features resembling chromophobe carcinomas are presented. The patients were four men and one woman ranging in age between 43 and 72 years. Clinically, the patients presented with non-specific symptoms of dyspnea and chest pain. Diagnostic imaging revealed the presence of anterior mediastinal masses. All patients underwent complete surgical resection of their tumors via thoracotomy. Grossly, the tumors measured between 4.0 and 5.5 cm in greatest diamet...

News at a glance: Long Covid defined, x-rayed atoms, and a tally of deep-sea biodiversity
WATER POLICY U.S. wetland protections curtailed In a decision that reduces federal protections for wetlands, the U.S. Supreme Court last week narrowed the definition of marshy areas covered by the Clean Water Act. A five-justice majority led by Justice Samuel Alito ruled the law applies only to wetlands that have a “continuous surface connection” to nearby regulated waters, rejecting an approach currently used by federal agencies that wetlands require only a “significant nexus.” Four justices led by Justice Brett Kavanaugh argued the new standard is too narrow, ignores the law’s intent to protect w...

Collagenous gastritis in children: A national cohort
CONCLUSION: Collagenous gastritis is an exceptional condition, clinically manifested in children as abdominal pain and iron deficiency anemia probably of hemorrhagic origin. Patients require long-term follow-up and monitoring of their disease to describe the risk of progression better.PMID:37236887 | DOI:10.1016/j.arcped.2023.03.013

The efficacy of alendronate for the treatment of thalassemia-associated osteoporosis: a randomized controlled trial
ConclusionAlendronate 70 mg orally once weekly for 12 months effectively improves BMD at L-spine, reduces serum BTMs, and alleviates back pain in thalassemia patients with osteoporosis. The treatment was well tolerated and had a good safety profile.

Treatment for osteoporosis in people with beta-thalassaemia
CONCLUSIONS: Bisphosphonates may increase BMD at the femoral neck, lumbar spine, and forearm compared to placebo after two years' therapy. Zinc supplementation probably increases BMD at the lumbar spine and hip after 12 months. Denosumab may make little or no difference to BMD, and we are uncertain about the effect of strontium on BMD. We recommend further long-term RCTs on different bisphosphonates and zinc supplementation therapies in people with beta-thalassaemia-associated osteoporosis.PMID:37159055 | PMC:PMC10167785 | DOI:10.1002/14651858.CD010429.pub3
