Early Life Iron Deficiency Persistently Alters Nociception
Clinical association studies have identified early life iron deficiency (ID) as a risk factor for the development of chronic pain. While preclinical studies have shown that early life ID persistently alters neuronal function in the central nervous system (CNS), a causal relationship between early life ID and chronic pain has yet to be established. We sought to address this gap in knowledge by characterizing pain sensitivity in developing male and female C57Bl/6 mice that were exposed to dietary ID during early life.

Scurvy, abnormal MRI, and gelatinous bone marrow in an adolescent with avoidant restrictive food intake disorder
ConclusionsAlthough this patient had common manifestations of scurvy, including perifollicular petechial hemorrhagic rash, joint effusions, anemia, and recurrent fevers, she still underwent an extensive workup. Clinicians should be aware that scurvy can present with multiple symptoms that mimic infectious, rheumatic, oncologic and hematological disease. Clinicians should have a high index of suspicion for scurvy in patients with malnutrition and eating disorders.

In This Texas County, There ’ s No Such Thing as Moving on From COVID-19
Nearly one out of every 100 people living in Lamb County, Texas, died of COVID-19, one of the highest death rates in the nation. But in June 2022, more than two years after the start of the pandemic, many residents in the rural towns making up the panhandle county say things are back to normal. At a fundraiser for a Catholic church in Olton in the northeast part of the county, local families had set up stands selling gorditas and aguas frescas, and a live band belted out Tejano crowd pleasers while couples danced. Javi Lopez, 17 at the time, told me that people were comfortable gathering in groups now. Some of his friends ...

The Novel Use of Rare Earth Magnets for the Extraction of Metallic Soft Tissue Foreign Bodies in Children
CONCLUSIONS: The use of Ndy to remove extremity soft tissue mFB in children appears to be feasible, safe, and efficient. Use of the Ndy allowed extraction via a small incision, optimizing the aesthetic result and avoiding the need for cross-sectional imaging, extensive surgical dissection, tissue reconstruction and prolonged operative time or x-ray exposure. The development of magnets of increasing energy density may be indicated to further optimize metallic soft tissue foreign body extraction in children in a minimally invasive manner.PMID:36916247 | DOI:10.1177/15533506231158209

Am Surg. 2023 Feb 21:31348231157898. doi: 10.1177/00031348231157898. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTA 27-year-old female presented at 13 weeks' gestation with epigastric pain and anemia requiring blood and iron transfusions but no family history of gastrointestinal malignancy. Upper endoscopy revealed a giant circumferential polyp and associated hyperplastic-appearing polyps in the proximal stomach. Biopsies revealed hyperplasia with lamina propria eosinophils. She was supported with intermittent transfusions until labor was induced at 34 weeks' gestation. Total gastrectomy was performed at seven weeks post-partum. Final pa...

Impact of chronic Helicobacter pylori infection on inflammatory markers and hematological parameters
CONCLUSIONS: Neutrophil and PLR values are practical and easily obtainable parameters related to inflammatory phases of H. pylori infection. They may become useful parameters in the follow-up. H. pylori infection is one of the important causes that trigger iron deficiency and vitamin B12 deficiency anemia. Further large-scale randomized controlled studies are needed to confirm our results.PMID:36808372 | DOI:10.26355/eurrev_202302_31190
