Current thoughts on cellular functions of numb-associated kinases
Mol Biol Rep. 2023 Apr 4:1-8. doi: 10.1007/s11033-023-08372-x. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTMembers of the Numb-associated kinase family of serine/threonine kinases play an essential role in many cellular processes, such as endocytosis, autophagy, dendrite morphogenesis, osteoblast differentiation, and the regulation of the Notch pathway. Numb-associated kinases have been relevant to diverse diseases, including neuropathic pain, Parkinson's disease, and prostate cancer. Therefore, they are considered potential therapeutic targets. In addition, it is reported that Numb-associated kinases have been involved in the life cycl...

A randomized, controlled Phase 1b trial of the < i > Sm < /i > -TSP-2 Vaccine for intestinal schistosomiasis in healthy Brazilian adults living in an endemic area
ConclusionsVaccination of adults withSm-TSP-2/Alhydrogel in an area of ongoingS.mansoni transmission was safe, minimally reactogenic, and elicited significant IgG and IgG subclass responses against the vaccine antigen. These promising results have led to initiation of a Phase 2 clinical trial of this vaccine in an endemic region of Uganda. Trial registrationNCT03110757.

Child-Pugh Class B or C Liver Disease Increases the Risk of Early Mortality in Patients With Hepatitis C Undergoing Elective Total Joint Arthroplasty Regardless of Treatment Status
CONCLUSION: Patients with HCV and a Child-Pugh Class B or C at the time of elective TJA had substantially increased odds of death, regardless of liver function, cirrhosis, age, Model for End-Stage Liver Disease level, HCV treatment, and viral load status. This is similar to the risk of early mortality observed in patients with chronic liver disease undergoing abdominal and cardiac surgery. Surgeons should avoid these major elective procedures in patients with Child-Pugh Class B or C whenever possible. For patients who feel their arthritic symptoms and pain are unbearable, surgeons need to be clear that the risk of death is...

BCG Aortitis, a Rare Complication of BCG Therapy
This report presents a rare case of BCGaortitis treated in a tertiary care centre.REPORT: A 74 year old man, with a history of bladder cancer treated with BCG therapy over a year ago, presented with malaise, abdominal pain, anorexia, and significant weight loss for several months associated with acute on chronic renal failure and a tender aneurysm. He was diagnosed with hepatic BCGitis and pararenal BCGaortitis. He was considered too high risk for open surgery after a multidisciplinary team meeting and was treated with a four vessel physician modified endograft (PMEG) and antituberculous therapy. At seven month follow up, ...

A case of hemoperitoneum after percutaneous radiofrequency ablation in a patient with hepatocellular carcinoma
We report a case of hemoperitoneum after percutaneous radiofrequency ablation in a patient with hepatocellular carcinoma. A 60-year-old female was hospitalized for the treatment of thrombasthenia and cirrhosis caused by chronic Hepatitis C, and computed tomography revealed hepatocellular carcinoma, which was treated by percutaneous radiofrequency ablation. After the ablation, hemoperitoneum was suspected because of the low hemoglobin level with abdominal pain. Approximately 6  h after the ablation treatment, the patient suddenly fell into a shock state and died. In this case, medical treatment-related death including malp...

Comparing EQ-5D-3L and EQ-5D-5L in measuring the HRQoL burden of 4 health conditions in China
ConclusionsThe 5L version may be preferable to the 3L, as it demonstrated superior performance with respect to higher sensitivity to mild health problems, better relative efficiency and responses and index value distributions.

Anti-programmed death-1 inhibitor nivolumab-induced immune-related adverse events: hepatitis, renal insufficiency, myositis, vitiligo, and hypothyroidism: a case-based review
We present five immunological  AEs in a single patient treated with NIVO. A 68-year-old male patient with metastatic renal cell carcinoma and right-sided nephrectomy received NIVO after pazopanib and sunitinib treatment. Two and a half months after starting NIVO, hepatocellular enzymes and creatinine were elevated. Concomitantl y, the patient noticed hypopigmentation of the hand skin and a change in voice and speech. Due to hepatitis, he has been treated with dexamethasone 16 mg daily for 22 days, after which hypothyroidism and increased creatine kinase were found without muscle pain and functional impairment. Dexametha...

Hepatitis B virus-associated polyarteritis nodosa (HBV-PAN) wherein immunosuppressants can be contraindicated, plasma exchanges have a proven role when combined with antiviral therapy. Plasma exchange by hastening the clearance of immune complexes is beneficial in acute organ dysfunction. A 25-ye...

What is PAN?
Discussion Vasculitis is an inflammation of the blood vessels. Often, the term implies the arterial vessels, but venous and capillary vessels can be affected. The nomenclature to describe vasculitis and its classification have varied over time. Arterial vessel size is one method and some more common entities include: Small vessel, mainly Granulomatous – granulomatosis with polyangiitis (aka Wegener’s granulomatosis), eosinophilic granulomatosis with polyangiitis (aka Churg Strauss syndrome) Nongranulomatous – Henoch-Schonlein purpura (HSP), microscopic polyangiitis Medium vessel, mainly Childhood sys...

Demographic, clinical and aetiological characteristics of patients with hepatocellular carcinoma followed between 2012 and 2017 at University Hospital Joseph Raseta Befelatanana, Antananarivo, Madagascar
CONCLUSION: HCC are diagnosed at advanced stage in this study. The prognosis is poor for most patients. HBV infection is the main risk factor. An effort should be made for early diagnosis and prevention.PMID:36819823 | PMC:PMC9934877 | DOI:10.3332/ecancer.2022.1466
