Incidence of thromboembolic events after use of gelatin-thrombin-based hemostatic matrix during intracranial tumor surgery
This study evaluates the relationship between flowable hemostatic matrix and deep vein thrombosis in a large cohort of patients treated for brain tumor removal. The authors conducted a retrospective, multicenter, clinical review of all craniotomies for tumor removal performed between 2013 and 2014. Patients were classified in three groups: group I (flowable gelatin hemostatic matrix with thrombin), group II (gelatin hemostatic without thrombin), and group III (classical hemostatic). A total of 932 patients were selected: tumor pathology included 441 gliomas, 296 meningiomas, and 195 metastases. Thromboembolic events were i...

Porous chitosan microspheres for application as quick in vitro and in vivo hemostat
We reported the fabrication of porous chitosan microspheres (CSMS) with tunable surface pore size by microemulsion combined with thermally induced phase separation technique, and its application as a quick hemostat. Their hemostatic property was characterized by blood clotting kinetics, adherence interaction between red blood cells/platelets and CSMS, in vitro and in vivo hemostasis by rat tail amputation and liver laceration models, and histological analysis. Their density, surface area, porosity, water absorption ratio were 0.04–0.06g/cm3, 28.2–31.5m2/g, 98%, and 15.5–23.2g/g, respectively. The surface pore was con...

Influences of mesoporous zinc-calcium silicate on water absorption, degradability, antibacterial efficacy, hemostatic performances and cell viability to microporous starch based hemostat
In this study, mesoporous zinc-calcium silicate (m-ZCS) was synthesized, and microporous starch (MS) based hemostatic agents of m-ZCS/MS composites for hemorrhage control was fabricated. The results showed that the incorporation of m-ZCS into MS significantly enhanced the water absorption and degradability of the composites, which were dependent on the m-ZCS content. Moreover, the composites with antibacterial property could inhibit the growth of Escherichia coli (E. coli) and the antibacterial ratios increased with the m-ZCS content. The in vitro coagulation evaluation by using activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT)...

Use of Gelatin Sponge Affects Postoperative Morbidity In Cesarean Section Patients.
CONCLUSIONS Delay in recovery of bowel motility may be due to the local hypersensitivity reaction caused by GS and/or dislocation of this local hemostat. Women who receive gelatin sponge treatment during CS should be monitored closely for the recovery of postoperative intestinal motility. PMID: 28258978 [PubMed - in process]

Starch-derived absorbable polysaccharide hemostat enhances bone healing via BMP-2 protein.
In this study, we used a model of rabbit parietal bone defect and a mouse osteoblast cell line MC3T3-E1 to evaluate the effects of SAPH on bone healing. We found that SAPH significantly decreased bone healing scores, reduced defective area of parietal bone, and increased the areas of bone trabeculae and cavitas medullaris. In addition, SAPH enhanced MC3T3-E1 osteoblasts proliferation, up-regulated the expressions of alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and osteocalcin and increased the level of bone morphogenetic protein 2 (BMP-2) in MC3T3-E1 osteoblasts. These SAPH-induced benefits in MC3T3-E1 osteoblasts were significantly abolish...

J & J ’ s Evarrest fibrin sealant patch wins expanded indication for hemostasis
Johnson & Johnson (NYSE:JNJ) subsidiary Ethicon said today that the FDA approved an expanded indication for its Evarrest fibrin sealant patch as an supplementary hemostat. With the expanded indication, the patch can be used with manual compression as an adjunct to hemostasis in adult surgery patients, when standard surgical techniques to control bleeding such as suture or ligature are ineffective. The fibrin sealant patch uses biologics to rapidly stop problematic bleeding while a patient is undergoing surgery. The drug device reacts human thrombin and fibrinogen to form a fibrin clot, providing a structure for clot f...

Fibrin Glue Market: Asia is expected to witness high growth rates in the next five years, 2021
Fibrin glue is a unique adhesion material used in surgeries for closure of wounds. Fibrin glues are mainly extracted from collective plasma and contain different amounts of purified and virally-inactivated human proteins. Fibrin glue is composed of two components, including fibrinogen and factor XIII. These concentrated ingredients interact with a solution of thrombin and calcium to form coagulum. As the thrombin and fibrinogen/factor XIII solution combine, a clot of a blood protein called fibrin develops in a few seconds, depending on the dilute form of thrombin is used. Some of the characteristics of fibrin glue include ...

Hemostatic Efficacy of Nanofibrous Matrix in Rat Liver Injury Model.
Abstract This present study examined the hemostatic efficacy of nanofibrous matrix in a rat liver model. The nanofibrous matrix comprising gelatin and polycaprolactone was prepared by electrospinning method. Twelve animals underwent surgery and were followed-up for a month. Time taken to cease bleeding, activated partial thromboplastin time, prothrombin time, and fibrinogen concentration were measured. Histopathological examination of liver was also done of treated and control animals. All test animals showed very rapid hemostasis after application of electrospun sheet. Histopathological study showed quick recover...
