Obesity and Pelvic Floor Disorders: A Review of the Literature.
Authors: Pomian A, Lisik W, Kosieradzki M, Barcz E Abstract Overweight and obesity are becoming a worldwide health problem associated with numerous co-morbidities. National costs of obesity and pelvic flor disorders have been rising since the 1950s across the world. Obesity is thought to have a very strong effect on pelvic floor disorders, and, considering the high prevalence of both problems worldwide, it is of utmost importance to evaluate the association between these pathologies as well as the impact of obesity on treatment efficacy. This review is based on a selection of reports in the literature (PubMed searc...

Examining Theory-Based Behavior-Change Constructs, Social Interaction, and Sociability Features of the Weight Watchers Online Community
Conclusion. The Weight Watchers’ online community included much discussion about weight loss. Findings suggest that physical activities require more encouragement than dieting. Health educators have an opportunity to interject and moderate meaningful discussions. For example, dieting with certain medical conditions, opinions on various diets, and the relationship between dieting and being healthy are opportunities to facilitate learning. Discussion posts irrelevant to weight loss help build social relationships.

Feeding People, And Democracy, To Death
As a physician, and a specialist in disease prevention and health promotion, I have long been nothing less than sickened by the unending flow of misinformation about food. My job is protecting the health of people, and misinformation about diet and health is toxic to them. It makes me figuratively sick because it makes so many actually sick.Diet is profoundly important to every aspect of health.  When bad, diet is a major contributor to chronic disease, disability, and premature death - to say nothing of comparably ghastly impacts on every aspect of planetary health. When optimal, diet is a major contributor to both v...

Systematic review of the effectiveness of health-related behavioral interventions using portable activity sensing devices (PASDs)
Conclusion</strong>: There is insufficient evidence to draw a conclusion about the general health-related benefits of PASD interventions. PASD interventions may improve intermediate outcomes when coupled with multiple behavioral change techniques. Devices alone or with minimal behavioral change support are insufficient to change health-related outcomes.</span>

The Effect of Technology-Mediated Diabetes Prevention Interventions on Weight: A Meta-Analysis
Conclusions: Technology-mediated diabetes prevention programs can result in clinically significant amounts of weight loss, as well as improvements in glycaemia in patients with prediabetes. Due to their potential for large-scale implementation, these interventions will play an important role in the dissemination of diabetes prevention programs.

Hepato-bronchial fistula secondary to perforated sigmoid diverticulitis: a case report
ConclusionsRefractory right-sided pleural effusion combined with constitutional symptoms should alert clinicians to search for possible hepatic abscess, especially in the context of diverticulitis. The rupture of an untreated hepatic abscess could lead to death from profound sepsis or rarely, as in this case, a hepato-bronchial fistula. Timely investigation and a multidisciplinary treatment approach can lead to improved patient outcomes.

The efficacy of wearable activity tracking technology as part of a weight loss program: a systematic review.
CONCLUSIONS: The results suggests that short-term (<6 months) weight loss interventions using activity trackers may be a better option than a standard weight loss program in middle age or older adults. Younger adults may not benefit from such technology. PMID: 28488834 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Comment on: Paired editorial: efficacy of video-based education program in improving metabolic surgery perception among patients with obesity and diabetes
Both medical and surgical weight loss interventions improve patient health by alleviating obesity-related health concerns. Medical weight loss interventions, such as the implementation of lifestyle changes with or without the addition of prescription anti-obesity medications, yields minimal weight loss up to 10% [1]. While it is known that bariatric/metabolic surgery yields greater weight loss —averaging 50% at year five [2] —in addition to which either 60-80% of surgical patients (procedure dependent) with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) experiencing remission or significant improvement of their disease (up to 90%) [3].

Comparison of metabolic outcomes in patients undergoing laparoscopic roux-en-Y gastric bypass versus sleeve gastrectomy - a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomised controlled trials.
CONCLUSION: Based on this meta-analysis, RYGB is more effective than SG in improving weight loss and short- and mid-term glycaemic and lipid metabolism control in patients with and without T2DM. Therefore, unless contraindicated, RYGB should be the first choice to treat patients with obesity and T2DM and/or dyslipidaemia. PMID: 30035801 [PubMed - in process]

Media portrayal of M āori and bariatric surgery in Aotearoa/New Zealand.
CONCLUSION: There was limited reporting on Māori health inequalities and equitable access to publicly funded bariatric surgery in New Zealand. We argue that this lack of coverage may work against addressing disparities in obesity prevalence and access to publicly funded bariatric surgery for Māori in New Zealand. Probiotics, prebiotics and synbiotics for weight loss and metabolic syndrome in the microbiome era.
CONCLUSIONS: Diet supplementation with synbiotics prepared using selected strains (such as Lactobacillus gasseri strains) showed to exert weight-reduction and anti-inflammatory activity in large independent studies. Their administration, together with galactomannan and/or inulin fibers, may increase weight management effects due to synergistic effect on short chain fatty acid production and microbiota 're-configuration'. Postoperative weight loss followed by radical cystectomy predicts poor prognosis in patients with muscle-invasive bladder cancer
AbstractWe aimed to investigate the impact of postoperative weight loss following radical cystectomy (RC) on patients ’ prognoses. RC and urinary diversion were performed in 512 consecutive patients with muscle-invasive bladder cancer at our hospitals between May 1996 and July 2018. Demographic clinical information, pre- and postoperative serum albumin, hemoglobin, and weight were evaluated retrospectively at 1  month. We also evaluated the association of weight loss with complications and overall survival (OS) as estimated using the Kaplan–Meier method and compared using the log-rank test. Risk factors for poor OS we...

Nutritional strategies for psoriasis: current scientific evidence in clinical trials.
CONCLUSIONS: Weight loss combined with a healthy lifestyle was shown to be very beneficial for patients with moderate to severe disease with a significant reduction of the Psoriasis Area and Severity Index (PASI) score. Currently, oral vitamin D supplementation for prevention or treatment of psoriasis in adults with normal vitamin D levels is not recommended; however, psoriasis patients with a deficit in plasma vitamin D levels are advised to complement with oral supplements to prevent psoriasis-related comorbidities. Instead of zinc, selenium, and omega 3 supplements have been proven beneficial for psoriasis patients. Amo...
