Body Weight, Anorexia, and Undernutrition in Older People
Abstract: Ideal body weight for maximum life expectancy increases with advancing age. Older people, however, tend to weigh less than younger adults, and old age is also associated with a tendency to lose weight. Weight loss in older people is associated with adverse outcomes, particularly if unintentional, and initial body weight is low. When older people lose weight, more of the tissue lost is lean tissue (mainly skeletal muscle) than in younger people. When excessive, the loss of lean muscle tissue results in sarcopenia, which is associated with poor health outcomes. Unintentional weight loss in older people may be a res...

The level of health education in the Polish population.
Conclusions: 1. The level of knowledge about non-pharmacological methods of preventing lifestyle diseases in the Polish population is high except of the role of physical activity and daily vegetables consumption. Childhood obesity prevention and management in rural communities
Using telemedicine to unite clinicians and provide health education for them - and by extension, their patients - is an effective way to manage childhood obesity in remote areas. For these communities, which often have limited access to pediatric subspecialists, having a HEALTH-COP can make all the difference. UC Davis research published in the American Journal of Medical Quality has found that HEALTH-COP - the Healthy Eating Active Living TeleHealth Community of Practice - improved health in rural communities throughout California...

This article is essential reading. (For more on tramadol, click here.) [HT @DavidJuurlink] Carbon Monoxide Toxicity: Over at Academic Life in Emergency Medicine, there is an excellent review of carbon monoxide toxicity by Dr. Dan Repplinger, with expert peer review by Dr. David Juurlink. The review focuses on the indications for hyberbaric oxygen therapy. Dr. Juurlink summation reflects my opinion on the matter exactly: ” . . .there are no absolute indications for HBO on patients with CO poisoning. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.” Another must-read. Liver toxicity and dietary supplements: The New...

Obesity and Physical Frailty in Older Adults: A Scoping Review of Lifestyle Intervention Trials
Abstract: Many frail older adults are thin, weak, and undernourished; this component of frailty remains a critical concern in the geriatric field. However, there is also strong evidence that excessive adiposity contributes to frailty by reducing the ability of older adults to perform physical activities and increasing metabolic instability. Our scoping review explores the impact of being obese on physical frailty in older adults by summarizing the state of the science for both clinical markers of physical function and biomarkers for potential underlying causes of obesity-related decline. We used the 5-stage methodological ...

The Stress Epidemic and the Search for the Modern Cure
We are living in an epidemic of stress. The people who walk into my office on a daily basis - busy successful New Yorkers with full lives and a lot going on -- look to the world like they have it all. But more often than not they are deeply stressed out. They are not alone. In 2011, nearly 75 million unique prescriptions were written for Xanax and Ativan, two anti-anxiety medications, in the United States, indicating our country has a serious problem with stress. Furthermore, one in 10 Americans now takes an antidepressant medication -- and among women in their 40s and 50s, that number is one in four. From, what I see da...
