Experts estimate that such supplements are responsible for about 20% of drug-related liver injury. Often these products claim to enhance bodybuilding, increase energy, or assist with weight-loss. Sometimes they contain unlisted pharmaceuticals such as steroids. The 1994 Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act specifically prohibits the Food and Drug Administration from exerting and pre-marketing authorities over these supplements.
