Awareness of Cancer Signs and Barriers to Help Seeking: a National Survey
AbstractAbout 27% of cancer patients in Jordan are discovered in advanced stages; this resulted in poor prognosis and survival rates. One possible cause of late presentation is lack of awareness of warning signs and risk factors of cancer. The purpose of this study is to identify the level of awareness of cancer warning signs, risk factors, and barriers to seeking medical advice among the Jordanian public. A cross-sectional survey design was used. A convenience sample of 2292 participants from the Jordanian public was included in the study. The Cancer Awareness Measure (CAM) was used. Of the 2292 participants, 1206 were fe...

Weight Bias Is a Problem in Health Care. Here ’ s What Doctors Can Do
Aubrey Gordon still recalls going to the doctor and having her blood pressure checked three times—because the provider couldn’t believe it was normal, given the fact that she’s overweight. Considering the treatment she’s received at doctors’ offices all her life, she wasn’t exactly surprised. “It’s kind of wild to see that my size comes with so many assumptions,” she says. “From the moment I walk in, my fatness is considered a problem to be solved. Even before I speak, there’s bias and misconceptions based on how I look. I’m considered lazy, non-compli...

Prevalence and Measures of Nutritional Compromise Among Nursing Home Patients: Weight Loss, Low Body Mass Index, Malnutrition, and Feeding Dependency, A Systematic Review of the Literature
Abstract: Weight loss and poor nutrition have been important considerations in measuring quality of nursing home care since 1987. Our purpose was to examine, synthesize, and provide a systematic review of the current literature on the prevalence and definitions of nutritional problems in nursing home residents. In the fall of 2011, we performed MEDLINE searches of English-language articles published after January 1, 1990. Articles were systematically selected for inclusion if they presented prevalence data for general nursing home populations on at least one of the following: weight loss, low body mass index, Mini-Nutritio...

'Historic breakthrough' in Alzheimer's research
Conclusion This study showed an exciting new development in the quest for treating prion diseases, also known as transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSEs), such as Creutzfeldt-Jacob disease (CJD) in humans or bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) in animals. This was a small study of 29 mice and had to be discontinued after 12 weeks. Despite encouraging results, including that after this time period the prion disease had not progressed and the drug had stopped brain cell death, we do not know how long the drug might work. The researchers also point out that in these early stages they have not worked out how to st...

The Association of Direct Observation of Medical Students With Patient-Centered Care for Obesity.
CONCLUSIONS: Independent observation and self-report of instruction adequacy and content had no consistent association with care quality. However, direct faculty observation predicted improvement in both student self-reports and independent observer ratings of students' interpersonal quality of care. Further work is needed to define optimal methods of imparting patient-centered care. PMID: 32267522 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]
