An ongoing search for potential targets and therapies for lethal sepsis
Abstract Sepsis, which refers to a systemic inflammatory response syndrome resulting from a microbial infection, represents the leading cause of death in intensive care units. The pathogenesis of sepsis remains poorly understood although it is attributable to dysregulated immune responses orchestrated by innate immune cells that are sequentially released early (e.g., tumor necrosis factor(TNF), interleukin-1(IL-1), and interferon-γ(IFN-γ)) and late (e.g., high mobility group box 1(HMGB1)) pro-inflammatory mediators. As a ubiquitous nuclear protein, HMGB1 can be passively released from pathologically damaged cel...

Fiber and macrogol in the therapy of chronic constipation.
Authors: Stanghellini V, Bellacosa L, Cogliandro R Abstract Chronic constipation is a common condition in the general population. Although the majority of affected individuals do not seek medical consultation and search for remedies for their condition in the pharmacy or herbal shops, the actual health burden caused by this condition is extremely high. Many laxatives are available, but patients are often dissatisfied with the therapies adopted, whether prescribed by a doctor or self prescribed, and this leads to further social and health burdens. All of the available guidelines promote initiating the therapy of any...

Nutraceutical for Autosomal Dominant Polycystic Kidney Disease Therapy.
Authors: Yuajit C, Chatsudthipong V Abstract Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) is the most common inherited renal disorder caused by mutations of either PKD1 or PKD2 gene. Cyst formation initiates from a combination of abnormal cell proliferation along with enhanced fluid secretion. ADPKD is characterized by the progressive enlargement of cysts which destroy the renal parenchymal cells, resulting in renal failure. Currently, there is no effective treatment for this disease. Interestingly, several relevant therapeutic effects of herbal medicine relevant to pathogenic process of ADPKD have urged th...

Search for Anti-angiogenic Substances from Natural Sources.
Abstract As angiogenesis is critical for tumor growth and metastasis, potent and selective anti-angiogenic agents with novel modes of action are highly needed for anti-cancer drug discovery. In this review, our studies focusing on the search for anti-angiogenic substances from natural sources, such as bastadins, globostellatic acid X methyl esters and cortistatins from marine sponges, and pyripyropenes from marine-derived fungus, together with senegasaponins from medicinal plant, are summarized. Exploring neuroprotective potential of Withania somnifera phytochemicals by inhibition of GluN2B-containing NMDA receptors: An in silico study
N-methyl-D-aspartate receptors (NMDARs) mediated excitotoxicity has been implicated in multi-neurodegenerative diseases. Due to lack of efficacy and adverse effects of NMDA receptor antagonists, search for herbal remedies that may act as therapeutic agents is an active area of research to combat these diseases. Withania somnifera (WS) is being used for centuries as a nerve tonic and Nootropic agents. The present study targets the in silico evaluation of the neuroprotective efficacy of Withania somnifera phytochemicals by inhibition of NMDA receptor-mediated excitotoxicity through allosteric inhibition of the GluN2B containing NMDARs.

Treatment of insulin resistance by acupuncture: a review of human and animal studies.
CONCLUSIONS: EA, used alone or in combination with other therapies, such as Chinese herbs or diet-exercise interventions, has the potential to be an effective treatment for insulin resistance. Additional controlled clinical studies of acupuncture are needed in subjects with diabetes mellitus, ischaemic heart disease, muscle atrophy, and fatty liver disease. Pyrrolizidine alkaloids enhance alcohol-induced hepatocytotoxicity in vitro in normal human hepatocytes.
CONCLUSIONS: PA up-regulates EtOH-induced hepatocytotoxicity by inducing the inflammatory cytokines and enhancing the apoptotic effects of ethanol. There is a need for monitoring herbal medicine in order to optimize traditional medicine use and maximize the clinical benefits. Additionally, there is necessary to communicate to physicians the possible negative results of herbal remedies use. Also, the interactions between herbal remedies and drugs of misuse should be communicated to consumers. PMID: 28379594 [PubMed - in process]

Acupressure for respiratory allergic diseases: a systematic review of randomised controlled trials.
CONCLUSIONS: No reliable conclusions regarding the effects of acupressure on AR and asthma could be drawn by this review due to the small number of available trials with significant heterogeneity of study design and high/unclear risk of bias. Further, more rigorously designed RCTs are needed.Acupressure seems safe for symptomatic relief of AR and asthma, although larger studies are required to be able to robustly confirm its safety. Natural products in endodontics.
Authors: Almadi EM, Almohaimede AA Abstract Herbal remedies are used throughout the world, either in earlier or in recent times.
