In search of an ideal drug for safer treatment of obesity: The false promise of pseudoephedrine
Rev Endocr Metab Disord. 2021 May 4. doi: 10.1007/s11154-021-09658-w. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTObesity is a major public health problem worldwide. Only relatively few treatment options are, at present, available for the management of obese patients. Furthermore, treatment of obesity is affected by the widespread misuse of drugs and food supplements. Ephedra sinica is an old medicinal herb, commonly used in the treatment of respiratory tract diseases. Ephedra species contain several alkaloids, including pseudoephedrine, notably endowed with indirect sympathomimetic pharmacodynamic properties. The anorexigenic effect of...

Plant lectins as prospective antiviral biomolecules in the search for COVID-19 eradication strategies
Biomed Pharmacother. 2021 Dec 6;146:112507. doi: 10.1016/j.biopha.2021.112507. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTLectins or clusters of carbohydrate-binding proteins of non-immune origin are distributed chiefly in the Plantae. Lectins have potent anti-infectivity properties for several RNA viruses including SARS-CoV-2. The primary purpose of this review is to review the ability of lectins mediated potential biotherapeutic and bioprophylactic strategy against coronavirus causing COVID-19. Lectins have binding affinity to the glycans of SARS-COV-2 Spike glycoprotein that has N-glycosylation sites. Apart from this, the complement...

Indications of medical plants: what do medical students in Germany know? A cross-sectional study
CONCLUSION: Only a small minority of participating students know the official indications for specific phytotherapeutic drugs. Our study demonstrates that phytotherapy needs to be incorporated into the medical teaching curriculum.PMID:35092483 | DOI:10.1007/s00432-022-03921-6

The efficacy of Shenghua Decoction supplementation after early medical abortion: a meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials
CONCLUSION: Our findings suggest that SHD supplementation may be beneficial for women seeking a medical abortion before the 7-week gestational period and no adverse events in the experimental group were reported. However, the methodological quality of the included RCTs was unsatisfactory, and therefore it is necessary to further verify the effectiveness of SHD using standardized studies of rigorous design.PMID:35779783 | DOI:10.1016/j.ctim.2022.102848

Associations between Clinically-Diagnosed Medical Conditions and Dietary Supplement Use: The US Military Dietary Supplement Use Study
CONCLUSIONS: Users in many DS categories had a greater number of CDMCs, but protein/AA users had fewer CDMCs; results for combination products were mixed. These data indicate those with certain CDMCs were also users in some DS categories, especially individual vitamins/minerals, herbals, and MVM. Data are consistent with the use of DSs to enhance health, especially in those with CDMCs. Protein/AA and combination product users were more likely to be younger, more physically active men, factors that likely reduced CDMCs.PMID:36775272 | DOI:10.1017/S1368980023000095
