Epub 2023 Sep 5.ABSTRACTThe limited number and diversity of resident physicians pursuing careers as physician-scientists in medicine has been a concern for many decades. The Anesthesia Research Council aimed to address the status of the anesthesiology physician-scientist pipeline, benchmarked against other medical specialties, and to develop strategic recommendations to sustain and expand the number and diversity of anesthesiology physician-scientists. The working group analyzed data from the Association of American Medical Colleges and the Nationa...

Olaparib plus abiraterone versus placebo plus abiraterone in metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (PROpel): final prespecified overall survival results of a randomised, double-blind, phase 3 trial
This study is registered with ClinicalTrials.gov, NCT03732820, and is completed and no longer recruiting.FINDINGS: Between Oct 31, 2018 and March 11, 2020, 1103 patients were screened, of whom 399 were randomly assigned to olaparib plus abiraterone and 397 to placebo plus abiraterone. Median follow-up for overall survival in patients with censored data was 36·6 months (IQR 34·1-40·3) for olaparib plus abiraterone and 36·5 months (33·8-40·3) for placebo plus abiraterone. Median overall survival was 42·1 months (95% CI 38·4-not reached) with olaparib plus abiraterone and 34·7 months (31·0-39·3) with placebo plus a...

Supporting nonlinear careers to diversify science
by Anna L. Vlasits, Monique L. Smith, Maria Maldonado, Simone Brixius-Anderko Nonlinear careers through academia are increasingly common, but funding agencies and search committees penalize these paths. Why do scientists stray from the beaten path, how do they contribute to science, and how do we level the playing field? Those who follow non-linear career trajectories often face disadvantages in academia. This Perspective looks at why individuals might choose non-linear careers and how these benefit diversity in science.

Population Health Management: principles, models and areas of application in public health
Acta Biomed. 2023 Aug 30;94(S3):e2023162. doi: 10.23750/abm.v94iS3.14554.ABSTRACTThere is no single model for Population Health Management (PHM) and different definitions have been proposed. All PHM models and definitions share the overall aim of improving population health and reduce healthcare costs. To achieve these objectives, PHM makes use of conceptual tools such as the Chronic Care Model and predictive medicine, and technical tools such as information systems and computational and record-linkage techniques to collect and analyse data. Using these tools, it makes it feasible to articulate PHM approaches in the follow...

Epub 2023 Sep 1.ABSTRACTGlobal health (GH) as an academic field is fraught with both historical and present systemic injustice, including unilateral partnerships; power asymmetry in grant funding and research agenda setting; lack of acknowledgment of contributions from low- and middle-income country collaborators; and disadvantageous bias toward low- and middle-income country institutions. Reflecting on the legacies of colonialism and White supremacy is vital for training pediatricians to actively work to improve the health of all children worldwide,...
