Association of C677T and A1298C polymorphisms of the MTHFR gene with maternal risk for Down syndrome: a meta-analysis of case-control studies
CONCLUSION: The results of this meta-analysis support that the MTHFR C677T polymorphism, but not the A1298C one, is associated with the maternal risk for DS. Further studies are required to better characterize the contribution of gene-gene and gene-nutrient interactions as well as those of other regional or ethnic factors that could explain the observed different effect size in different populations.PMID:37689109 | DOI:10.1016/j.mrrev.2023.108470

Barriers and facilitators to healthcare for people without documentation status: A systematic integrative literature review
CONCLUSION: These findings illuminate the complex healthcare disparities experienced by people without documentation status and underscore facilitators enhancing care accessibility. Future research is needed to explore interventions to increase access to care for this population.IMPACT: This paper provides a comprehensive examination of the complex barriers and facilitators to healthcare for people without documentation status in the United States. The findings support the value of universal healthcare access, a priority of the World Health Organization, and can inform healthcare policies and practices worldwide.REPORTING ...

High Dietary Phosphorus Is Associated with Increased Breast Cancer Risk in a U.S. Cohort of Middle-Aged Women
Nutrients. 2023 Aug 25;15(17):3735. doi: 10.3390/nu15173735.ABSTRACTResearch has shown that high amounts of dietary phosphorus that are twice the amount of the U.S. dietary reference intake of 700 mg for adults are associated with all-cause mortality, phosphate toxicity, and tumorigenesis. The present nested case-control study measured the relative risk of self-reported breast cancer associated with dietary phosphate intake over 10 annual visits in a cohort of middle-aged U.S. women from the Study of Women's Health Across the Nation. Analyzing data from food frequency questionnaires, the highest level of daily dietary phos...

Her work paved the way for blockbuster obesity drugs. Now, she ’s fighting for recognition
When Svetlana Mojsov heard the spring 2021 announcement, she was startled. The Canada Gairdner International Award, a prestigious biomedical research prize, would be bestowed on three scientists for work underpinning the diabetes and obesity drugs that have exploded in popularity in recent years. “I was really upset,” recalls Mojsov, a chemist at Rockefeller University. The Gairdner award marked the third time in 4 years that the same trio of scientists—Joel Habener at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH), Daniel Drucker at the University of Toronto, and Jens Juul Holst at the University of Copenhagen—were hon...

Reinvigorating the environmental Kuznets curve hypothesis in the context of  highly polluted nations: evidence using advanced panel estimation techniques
Environ Sci Pollut Res Int. 2023 Sep 8. doi: 10.1007/s11356-023-29237-7. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTChina, United States, India, Russia, and Japan are regarded as the top five carbon dioxide-emitting nations in the world. These countries altogether account for more than half of the global annual discharges of carbon dioxide. Consequently, impeding the carbon emission-led environmental adversities in these countries is of critical emphasis for establishing environmental sustainability worldwide. In this regard, this study checks how economic progress, energy use intensification, and renewable energy use affect the annual...

Epub 2022 Mar 12.ABSTRACTWe assessed the cross-cultural role of Time Perspective (TP) tendencies [Past Positive (PP), Past Negative (PN), Present Hedonistic (PH), Present Fatalistic (PF), and Future (F)], the Deviation from a Balanced Time Perspective (DBTP) profile, the Deviation from a Negative Time Perspective (DNTP) profile, and mindfulness on life satisfaction (LS). The sample consisted of psychology undergraduate students (N= 867, MAGE= 20.19, SD= 3.417) in four countries: USA, Spain, Poland and Japan. We used a 17-item short version of the Z...

Arbovirology and Cold War Collaborations: A Transnational History of the Tick-borne Encephalitis Vaccine, 1930-1980
This article analyzes the history of immunization against tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) and specifically the processes that led to the creation and application of TBE vaccines in the Soviet Union and Austria. Rather than presenting the development of TBE vaccines from the perspective of national scientific schools, the article investigates their history as a transnational project, focusing on the connections among the Soviet Union, Czechoslovakia, Austria, the United States, and the United Kingdom. It argues that biomedical research on TBE was profoundly intertwined with political and military agendas and depended on civil...
