Real-World Utilization of an Intrauterine, Vacuum-Induced, Hemorrhage-Control Device
CONCLUSION: For both vaginal and cesarean births in real-world settings, rapid and effective bleeding control was achieved with an FDA-cleared intrauterine vacuum-induced hemorrhage-control device. The safety profile was consistent with that observed in the registrational trial (NCT02883673), and SAEs or adverse device effects were of the nature and severity expected in the setting of PPH. This device is an important new tool for managing a life-threatening condition, and timely utilization may help to improve obstetric hemorrhage outcomes.CLINICAL TRIAL REGISTRATION: ClinicalTrials.gov, NCT04995887.PMID:37713322 | DOI:10....

Addressing Inequalities in Breast Cancer Care Delivery
Surg Oncol Clin N Am. 2023 Oct;32(4):799-810. doi: 10.1016/j.soc.2023.05.009. Epub 2023 Jun 16.ABSTRACTBreast cancer treatment, timeliness of care, and clinical outcomes are inferior for patients of Black race and Hispanic ethnicity, and the origin of these inequities is multifactorial. Owing to aggregate reporting of data in the United States for patients of Asian, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander ancestry, disparities within and across these groups are difficult to appreciate. In large part due to low prevalence, male breast cancer remains understudied, and treatment algorithms are primarily extrapolated from resear...

Socioeconomic status and cecal adenocarcinoma mortality risk: an American population-based analysis
CONCLUSION: Low socioeconomic status is associated with an increased risk of death in patients with cecal adenocarcinoma in the United States and show different distribution patterns based on population. Improving health insurance policies and strengthening psychotherapy can provide guidance for improving prognosis f cecal adenocarcinoma patients.PMID:37712280 | PMC:PMC10505572 | DOI:10.12122/j.issn.1673-4254.2023.08.20

Assessing time-varying causal effect moderation in the presence of cluster-level treatment effect heterogeneity and interference
Biometrika. 2023 Sep;110(3):645-662. doi: 10.1093/biomet/asac065. Epub 2022 Nov 24.ABSTRACTThe micro-randomized trial (MRT) is a sequential randomized experimental design to empirically evaluate the effectiveness of mobile health (mHealth) intervention components that may be delivered at hundreds or thousands of decision points. MRTs have motivated a new class of causal estimands, termed "causal excursion effects", for which semiparametric inference can be conducted via a weighted, centered least squares criterion (Boruvka et al., 2018). Existing methods assume between-subject independence and non-interference. Deviations ...

Pro-Con Debate: Consideration of Race, Ethnicity, and Gender Is Detrimental to Successful Mentorship

Epub 2023 Sep 5.ABSTRACTAnesthesiology remains a specialty with low representation of women or members of racial and ethnic groups considered underrepresented in medicine (UiM). In the United States, women account for 33% of anesthesiology residents, while physicians identifying as Black, African American, Latinx, American Indian, or Alaska Native account for approximately 10%. Underrepresentation of these groups is even more pronounced in academic anesthesiology, especially at the senior ranks and roles, such as department chairs. Leaders in the f...

Dementia and Hearing Aid Use and Cessation: A National Study
CONCLUSIONS: Older adults with (vs. without) dementia are more likely to cease hearing aid use over time, most notably during the first year after adoption. Strategies to support hearing ability, such as self-management or care partner education, may improve communication for those living with co-occurring hearing loss and dementia.PMID:37713529 | DOI:10.1044/2023_AJA-23-00038

Tapeworms (cestoda: ophiotaenia) from the northern cottonmouth (agkistrodon piscivorus)
J Parasitol. 2023 Oct 1;109(5):464-479. doi: 10.1645/23-32.ABSTRACTThe northern cottonmouth, Agkistrodon piscivorus (Lacépède, 1789) (Viperidae: Crotalinae), occurs in the southeastern United States and is one of the few semiaquatic vipers in the world. Three proteocephalid tapeworms of the genus OphiotaeniaLa Rue, 1911 (Cestoda), have been described from this venomous snake. A critical evaluation of type specimens and tapeworms recently collected from A. piscivorus has revealed that only 2 species, Ophiotaenia marenzelleri (Barrois, 1898) and Ophiotaenia grandisLa Rue, 1911 (new synonym Ophiotaenia agkistrodontis [Harwo...
