Specific Antibody Deficiency in Adult Patients With IgG or IgG Subclass Deficiency.
CONCLUSION: SAD can be diagnosed in patients with normal IgG levels as well as in those deficient in IgG or the IgG3 subclass, implicating that restricted responses to Streptococcus pneumoniae polysaccharide antigens commonly exist in patients with predominantly antibody deficiency. CbpM and CbpG of Streptococcus Pneumoniae Elicit a High Protection in Mice Challenged with a Serotype 19F Pneumococcus.
This study aims to determine the immunogenicity of CbpM, CbpG and CbpL proteins of Streptococcus pneumoniae in a mice model. The genes were cloned into pET21a expression vector and the recombinant proteins were produced. Mice were immunized with the purified recombinant proteins. Subsequently, the mice were challenged with S. pneumoniae ATCC 49619 (2×106 CFU) and their survival and bacterial clearances were followed 24 hours after infection. For this month ’s issue of Annals, which focuses on vaccines, I’ve selected 3 article summaries from recent Allergy Watch that reviewed studies on various aspects of vaccines. The first reports data from the pivotal study showing the improved efficacy of the new recombinant subunit herpes zoster vaccine. The n ext review describes a report of a unique vaccine for cats that induces IgG blocking antibodies for Fel d 1. The last review shows discrepant results of pneumococcal titers from different labs.

Impact of Age and Region on Immune Responses to Allergy Immunotherapy
Allergy immunotherapy (AIT) can prevent allergic disease by modifying the adaptive immune system, similar to anti-pathogen vaccines, supporting the concept of AIT as an “allergy vaccination”. Some vaccines, e.g. influenza, pneumococcal pneumoniae, are administered globally with the same dose for all age groups. The aim of this study was to determine if sublingual immunotherapy (SLIT) across regions and age groups induce similar immunologic changes in IgE and Ig G4 with the goal of using the same dose and formulation worldwide.

How common are long-lasting, intensely itching vaccination granulomas and contact allergy to aluminium induced by currently used pediatric vaccines? A prospective cohort study
Conclusion: Long-lasting itching vaccination granulomas are poorly understood but more frequent than previously known after infant vaccination with commonly used diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis-polio-Haemophilus influenzae type b and pneumococcal conjugate vaccines. The risk increases with the number of vaccines given. Most children with itching granulomas become contact allergic to aluminium. Itching vaccination granulomas are benign but may be troublesome and should be recognised early in primary health care to avoid unnecessary investigations, anxiety and mistrust.

Clinical Characteristics of Adults with Chronic Rhinosinusitis and Specific Antibody Deficiency
Conclusions Of the 239 patients with CRS with normal IgG levels evaluated for immunodeficiency, 56 (23.4%) had SAD. A majority of patients with SAD may not need Ig replacement; however, a subset of patients with SAD benefit from Ig replacement.
